No Johnny, you're confounding "cognitive fatigue" with "postprandial somnolence" and they have totally different mechanisms. The early afternoon slump is a physiological response to having lunch. There are many mechanisms for this, for example the insulin spike causes tryptophan to pass through the blood-brain barrier, and in the brain tryptophan is immediately transformed into melatonin, which causes your slump. Also the "adenosine" mechanism you talked about is not caused by cognitive fatigue, but by glucose concentration. If you can't allow to take a siesta, then you'll have to eat little at lunch, for example just a raw salad, or skip lunch entirely.
@ADRIFTHIPHOP

Im curious how significant it might be for those who vape all day, which I'd imagine are just giving themselves constant glucose spikes at a high level........most of the issues john john covers are directly correlated to modern society....essentially, our brains have been studied by companies to be exploited in ways that we are poorly equipped to fight against.

As someone who works overnights (730p to 8a), sleep is the absolute worst for me. What has helped recently and I find myself unable to sleep without it is a facemask. I've had blackout curtains for years now and they did help but I found having something to just block out all the light possible has really helped me get some sleep. Sadly, like you said in the video, light from the sun really messed up your brain's capacity to think it's time for bed. So even after 12hrs of work and being exhausted, as soon as I get home it's like there's a new burst of energy ready for me to start the day even though my body is just not up to the task. I do have some new info now, so thank you for that Johnny.

There's another kind of biphasic sleep - where you naturally wake around 3-4am for an hour or two, then go back to sleep. That period of wakefulness during the night was apparently called "the watch" in medieval times, and it was so common as to be entirely normalised. This whole "8 hours per night" thing is, according to everything I've read, entirely a modern phenomenon. I used to think I was a complete insomniac and reliant on drugs to sleep...since handling this more as a "Cool, I'll get up and do something for an hour then go back to bed" thing than stressing out because I should be asleep, I've actually been much less tired during the day. Well, that and melatonin (a common requirement among autistics like me). There's also the 28 hour day theory, which only really applies to some people. I really want to try that some day, but it's not really compatible with the whole 9-5 rubbish we've got going on.

My entire life, since childhood, I have always slept great and have always slept at least 8 hours. My best BEST deep sleep seems to be when my alarm rings. Ugh! I hit snooze about 10 times. And, when I awake, leave me the hell alone for one hour while my brain wakes up. I can't even think clearly for about an hour.. This is nothing new, all my life. Wonder why I can't just jump up at the 1st alarm and be bright and cheery like my other family members?

@ananastea

For me, my tiredness was directly linked to hitting snooze a bunch of times. Try waking up right away and do one action (drink water, put on slippers, open the window - whatever). And you can train yourself to wake up with the alarm if it seems impossible - literally. Like, the night before put on you pajamas, lay down and have the alarm ring in 5 min, get up right away and do "the next action" that you planned. And repeat a few times. This way your brain creates a new reaction pathway. I read this on Steve Pavlina's blog a while ago I believe. And whenever I slide into that "hit snooze" state and can't fight it seemingly, this "training" always helps!

I work as a sleep technician, we always ask people if they're tired as a sign of sleep apnea (obstructive sleep apnea mostly) The logic of it comes from the fact that if you do have osa (which is above 5 events of sleep apnea per hour), you won't complete a full sleep cycle, including REM sleep, so you won't feel rested. Now, if you wake up and have symptoms of feeling tired / dry mouth / headaches It might be a sign of OSA, which in my little knowledge, may present more health risks than just feeling tired. I was told over and over that I have insomnia and struggled through school and jobs with exhaustion that no amount of caffeine could really tackle. When I took a night shift job in my twenties it was like the exhaustion magically disappeared. I was sleeping soundly and waking refreshed. It was exhilarating! Now that I’m a mom of school aged kids with the daytime expectations of school drop off and pick up, homework reminders, sports, meal planning, meticulous scheduling, etc. on top of my usual adult responsibilities, a night shift job just doesn’t work with my lifestyle anymore. I am finding that old exhaustion creeping back in more than ever. I never even thought to factor all of the day to day decisions into why I’m so dang tired all the time…

I needed this. I've recently began researching why I've been so tired lately and one thing I couldn't find much research on, was if I was drinking too much water and "flushing myself out". I was drinking almost 2 gallons of water a day and that was too much for my lifestyle (office job and a heavy weight training session afterward). Once I started limiting myself to only 1 gallon of water a day (may still be a little too much), I started feeling better after a couple of weeks. I do still feel fatigued around mid-day but do feel better than before. Now all I need to work on is limiting alcohol and decisions because I have the exercise portion down although I could use a little more sleep (2 kids under 2). However I don't have any hope on adjusting to my chronotype. If I want to have any time to spend with my kids at home, I need to wake up at 4 AM to have time for the gym and family after a 10 hour work day. Thanks for the video, it could not have come at a better time.

PSA that no one will likely even consider but I completely dropped all forms of caffeine. Was exhausted for 6 months and suffered. Now I’m barely ever tired/sleepy during the day. I have clean natural energy all day. I don’t wake up in the middle of the night and sleep like a log at night. Most importantly, I don’t wake up tired.

I like the map store idea. The differentiator that you have is that you can tie particular maps to videos, which builds a story element that normal map stores lack.

Map store sounds awesome! But I’d consider it only if it’s shipping globally, and there’s a nice framing or some protection included to prevent myself from ruining it.

decisions making me tired is interesting. if i have nothing to do for a day, and i sit around and watch youtube, i stay up way later than normal. but if i chose to play video games all day, i get tired and worn out after 8-10 hours of decision making. wow

Yes. Now I understand why I love mindless routines and habits. Also explained why I need a 3-hour nap after a visit to the doctor. Grocery shopping and hanging up wet laundry seem to clash with my chronotype. I feel like my most restful sleep is after the sun is up.

Very interesting show! I learned quite a bit about the physical and chemical aspects of why I'm tired all the time, or at least was, before I retired. There's probably a word connection there, but I have too much glutamate in my brain to come up with it right now. Anyway, thanks for this video and for all that you do! Oh, and yes, I LOVE maps and would be interested in seeing your collection and possibly helping clear some of them out of your closet :)

It’s very important to take a rest in your mind , that’s why most of us usually when on a hike just sit and look at the landscape and don’t do anything , just stare at it. Or when we come back from work we just have that 5-15 min pause when we turn of the car , not doing anything just resting the mind. Also it helps to go in Orthodox monastery every few months for a day or two , it recharges the body the mind and the soul.

So yeah, to maximise the value distribution, I think you should scan all the maps and have them available on your website to purchase with varied material options and partner up with an on demand print operation. As for the originals, I'd suggest you auction them, Christie's style and send a percentage of the proceeds to charity and combine it with some one on one time with you and/or your team over a physical or digital meet up. I'd love to help you out more in figuring these kinds of things out. So please feel free to reach out.

One thing you didn't mention is possible sleep apnea. Before I was diagnosed I would be sleeping for 9+ hours every night and still be tired and need a nap in the afternoon. Once I started using a CPAP I immediately stopped wanting to take naps and felt much more refreshed in the morning.

1) Don't do coffee naps in the afternoon, that will do you more harm than good, especially if you are caffeine sensitive (genetics) 2) No evidence (yet) to support the idea of delaying coffee, just Huberman jabber. Good advice overall however and I think a fantastic way to explain the evolutionary reasons we struggle today!

I am almost 37. I used to feel this, but not anymore. Whether I got proper sleep or not, I’m usually ok. These days, I get pretty good sleep. 6-7 hours a night with 1 shorter night a week and one long catch-up night. I work from home, workout daily though not all that ‘hard’… and have a 4-year old. The biggest change was eating. I switched to intermittent fasting. I break my fast at dinner, then have dessert and some snacks. Lost a lot more weight than I thought, then leveled out. Need to do better at WHAT I eat in that timeframe lol. Anyway - I mainly did it to avoid the after-meal “Itis” I would always get. Without that, I feel so much more energized ALWAYS. It’s nuts! I either drink a coffee or a Celsius in the morning to shake off the sleepiness, then I can rock through to 6-8pm for dinner… then up to ~11pm without issue.

Honestly, I've been doing some of these things without realising. Since covid and work from home I've been naturally going to bed at 2am and waking up at 9:30 ish. My team don't mind you starting as late as 9:45 which is when the morning stand up is. Since I work from home, clothing decisions are easy as its just "first t-shirt out the draw and a pair of shorts". I then spend the morning taking it slower to get my brain up and ready, take a shower at lunch and usually if I have caffeine it's at lunch or during the afternoon, never past 17:00. Because I'm a night owl my most productive time is the afternoon when others are struggling too so I pick up some slack and get it all sorted. When it comes to bedtime, I have smart bulbs that adjust the colour temperature and dimness depending on time of day so it helps me to feel naturally tired. I also drink nothing but water after 17:00. Finally, we use a meal kit delivery service which helps to avoid the decisions on what to eat other than 4-5 choices. We actively have a harder time deciding what to eat when ordering in or not using the service these days.

I've held this theory for a long time: ADHD and autism are so prevalent and so strongly tied to genetics because that's the natural evolution of the human brain. You don't need to be on high alert for predators anymore; you don't need to problem solve everything cause most commodities are a button away; you don't need to focus on mundane things to survive and thrive, and therefore the need to be able to pay attention is gone. And once the need for survival is gone, humans can focus on creating and experimenting, and ultimately progressing.

Even though I go to gym twice a week, run once a week, bike to work every day (not an electric bike and there are hills), don't drink caffeine (not even from soda), don't drink alcohol unless it's at a social thing, don't watch screens an hour before bed, don't have my phone in my bedroom, make sure my extremities don't get cold and make sure my room isn't too warm I still often wake up very tired and with a headache from lack of good sleep. More precisely from a lack of deep-sleep. The problem is that I can't affect that. All the things I mentioned only helps me falling asleep, but they don't help with my sleep quality. I.e. amount of deep-sleep. - I often get ridiculous amounts of REM sleep so I wish I could convert some of it to deep-sleep like a slider in a computer game. I doubt there is an element of sleep-hygiene or sleep tricks I'm not aware of, but I welcome suggestions for the off chance I might stumble upon something that finally solves this.

Maybe the dwelling of choice is a key point here too. A lot of simple choices show immediate results, and there is satisfaction. But when life has become so complex, and you can’t see the results immediately, lingering thoughts will probably create more unnecessary transmissions in the brain. I personally am a guy who doesn’t linger in choices, so I always feel much more energetic than others. Maybe being satisfied with your actions and not lingering on the worries of the results will help to minimize unnecessary thought processes.

One thing you should of mentioned, is that your body builds adenosine primarily through the burning of energy (ATP, Adenosine Tri Phosphate). Your brain, while using a lot of energy to do its tasks, doesn't require the same huge calorie demands for more difficult tasks as your muscles do. You can get far more rewards from using a little bit of brain power than you can your muscles. This means that yes while the number of tasks matters, you also need to consider that you're not using your body enough. When you become depleted, it should feel good. If it's not, you're fatigued, not depleted, you don't need to sleep you need a break. Sleep cleans up the mind, but the problem is the fundamental imbalance of tasks, no matter how well rested you are, you'll be in the same position eventually. In short, if you did pushups as well as solving problems, you would feel more appropriately tired, faster, and you'll feel better about it. Our ancestors didn't need to do much mathematics, but they did do LOTS of walking.
