Swimming faster comes down to two things: 1) decrease drag and 2) increase propulsion. If you want to swim faster, you have to train faster! Varying your intensity is one way to do it! Stay focused! You got this!!! Happy swimming :)

In the last two years I have reduced my 70 lengths (1750 meters) time by about 3 minutes. I used to do it in about 52.5 minutes (freestyle). Now I regularly manage 49.5 or less and i have achieved this purely by concentrating on improving my stroke. I am 71 years old so improving my physique or fitness is unlikely to happen but I'm happy that I am now faster than the average swimmers half my age. My endurance is also much better than average and I can manage two miles if I'm in the mood. I'm continuing small but steady improvements and would advise swimmers of advanced years to concentrate and focus on technique. Slowing your stroke when trying to make improvements often produces a faster time. Also, for longer distances, reduced kicking saves energy. I now have a two beat kick (i.e. one kick for each arm stroke) and feel very balanced and relaxed in the water.

I mostly swim very short (15min), 30min max sessions in open water and pool 4/5times a week.. Can't get my head around swimming any longer because of the boredom.. sometimes 100m sprints sometimes just a constant 1k. I now feel very comfortable in the water and can swim 1k 14:45, 100m 1:15, and the odd time that I do decide to swim longer 61min 3.8k. I think its the consistency that helps alot.

Love this post! I was a tennis player too. Just get bored. Sometimes I do just 15 minute workouts and head up to the weight room and cardio to complete it. Swimming long distance is all about rhythm and patience.

Definitely geared towards a swimmer 50 and under. But I do like the differential effort designation and how you should have elements of each major category in your workout

Thanks for the feedback, Bob! This workout's intervals are designed to fit my goals and my speed! With the MySwimPro app, even swimmers over 50 can do a workout just like this, tailored to them. Check it out at myswimpro.com/coach :)

Fares: can you provide some pointers on how to modulate one's swimming intensity? For example, one could go faster by having a higher stroke rate (cadence, or number of arms strokes per minute) or by increasing DPS (distance per stroke) or by a combination of both. Kicking speed & depth are other variables to play with. Minimizing drag is also a key factor. If you can provide some guidance on how to train these different aspects of intensity, that would be great! 🙏🏻

Hey Steve! Love it, thanks for the suggestion. I'll work on that. In the short term, focus on how many strokes you take and your speed!

My problem is I see someone in a lane next to me going faster and hardly working it. Our bodies are all different. Especially true is duration. You got to warm up.

I noticed that I have the right form and technique. But people who don’t, who swim without even putting their heads underwater are faster then me. Am I not pulling enough?

I have a very specific goal, 3860 meters open water under 1 hour, in the most relaxed and energy efficient way possible. However, I have not found any swim-training that suits that goal, all that I can find are focused on swimming short distances as fast as possible at "max effort"...
@FaresKsebati
2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! While swimming at max effort at some points in your workout is great for improving your stamina, longer sets (such as 4x500 on a descending interval) would also be great for your goal. The MySwimPro app has specific open water training plans for this - check it out at myswimpro.com/coach!

Hi Richard! Scroll to the workout library, then select freestyle. Searching "Effort Level Variance" should get the workout to come up. If you're still having trouble finding it, please email us at support@myswimpro.com :)

Stuff works. There is science behind all sports and you need to train specific energy systems. That is how I was able to run the Boston Marathon in 2:35 at age 45!

I agree for other sports like running and cycling (training plans are important, but for the most part it's volume and intensity that matters). But for swimming, technique is also key. All the fitness doesn't make you faster if you waste all energy for something else than propulsion.

I'd love to follow a more structured training plan but I get 1 time a week when there's a chance for me to be alone in my lane. Saturday/Sunday at 6 a.m. is when it's SOMETIMES possible so whenever it happens I just go for.... back to back freestyle (current record is 1600m in 32 min. but I managed to do 2k in 40 min. before I had a longer break from swimming) and once I'm done with my goal distance I swim some more (breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, some underwater fun; I never learnt butterfly and I'm afraid my shoulders wouldn't survive it). And other times I go to the pool there's usually at least 2 people in my lane and honestly I get discouraged before jumping in the pool so I just swim different strokes with different speeds (usually too fast because of anxiety so I get tired quickly). I may try going swimming both Saturday and Sunday but for now my body is not ready for 2 days in a row.

have to go swimming training everyday, that's not problem but when the coach tells us to do 32times(400m).. every 10times is rlly hard to breathe while swimming and i get rlly slow down... but when i reach 11th times i become fastest in my lane... I hate it...why?? It affects my Competition in bad ways... Hope yall get what i want to mean.

Quick question. My swim sprint triathlon distance is 750mts. Why would I need to swim/train for hours? I need to be done and on my bike in 10 minutes.

Hi there! Great question. While you don't need to train for hours (even 30-45 minutes a practice will do!), swimming consistently will help you achieve a good feel for the water and improve your technique, making you swim faster in your race :)
