Open club face advice is very situational. If you're playing a shitty muni where the turf is tough, your club's bounce will cause you to blade the ball because open face raises the club's front edge. More chipping practice is what's ultimately going to fix anyone's chipping.

Since I was 8 (20 years ago), my absolute favorite and most practiced part of golf is chipping and the approach. My favorite club in the bag is my 60 with low bounce and a high toe. I can comfortably use it from 60 yards all the way to the fringe, in the rough, sand, and rain. I think it's just a matter of practice to understand the feel and comfort to not blade the ball on a bad lie. It really all comes down to the club face direction, close it up and you can get those more difficult lies more easily. Open it up and you get that loft, spin, and control on the better lies

I'm definitely hitting shots I couldn't hit 2 months ago, and today I shot 80 again, with a lot of very accurate irons from the changes. That's golf and the only way of improving. For recreational golfers I wouldn't recommend it. There are too many variables that most likely will lead to blading the ball. Play around with 7 iron down to Gap wedge. Play ball back of stance toward back foot toe or behind. Press club foward playing the ball closer to the hosel and just take a putting stroke. Play around with close face to neutral face. Too much of an open face with this technique will cause a hosel ball. It is an easier technique with very little movement. Do not let your wrist hinge at all. Keep your hands pressed forward the entire stroke.

You don’t want speed, you want spin so angle of attack and dynamic loft (spin loft) needs to be mentioned in this video

How about if the grass is super tight? Seems like it would skip into the ball.

Chipping with a muddy club will help take spin off the ball so it rolls out better.

This is such good insight! I’ll be practicing this at the chipping green later. Thank you!

Dan Grieve prefers a straight face for accuracy of direction. Then you just change the club or use release 2. If you want more bounce, get clubs with a greater degree of bounce.

I don't usually chip with the club face cause for me it always shanks but you don't need speed or else it's gonna go over

Can this concept be applied to your irons as well?

I will try this if I ever miss a green, but thank you. Just quit missing greens.

Mind me if I'm wrong but that seemed to be a pitch swing not a chip? Am I misinformed or is chip just a vague term?

Yeah when I do a long back swing like that the ball is going 50 yards past the green

It’s like a wrecking ball. I’ve played that way my whole life. Long swing doesn’t mean further.

Be sure to use the bounce with an open face. To produce an extra soft shot, play the shot with no shaft lean at all at adress. 👍

Gravity is a theory. Think buoyancy and density of the medium(air or water). Electrostatics hold our world together.

People need to know this is information if you're u are a 10 handicap or less. If you are struggling with chipping and over 10 handicap there are probably a million things you could work on more than opening the face. But I usually play with my face a little open when I chip allows more soft hands as well.

If you set it down itself, the bottom of the blade is designed to be open, as opposed to an iron where you line up the face for the shot. But fair warning, this will cause most Amateurs to pork one 15-35 yards over the green 🤣

Whenever i open the face.. it chips right. Never straight. When i close the face.. it goes straight for the bump and run

I think it depends how good you are because an average amateur I believe should have the toe more closed if you're playing golf almost everyday or hitting the range really working on your shipping then yes you can make the open face work well but I've tried both and when I don't play often that closed face is money for me I won't get the spin but at least I'm on the green and pudding for par and not making a disaster open shank blade
