I love how in tune Jeff is with the car and his ability to actually explain what it happening in order to get faster and correct any issues. I’m not nearly as good a driver as Jeff, but I love playing lead follow with him. The huge difference is I couldn’t tell you what the hell just happened as to why I did a faster/slower lap. I just feel the car and can’t explain it. I envy Jeff’s ability to do this.

I’ve raced most 911 iterations since 2003. On the upshift, a flat shit sequential is quicker. On the downshift in a manual box you can under rev match in big stops and shorten your braking distance if you have manually adjustable brake bias. I did it all the time. You can also use it to partially rotate the car when tyre wear is high and you can’t trail as deeply as is ideal. Both have their benefits but on the lap, the sequential is ultimately quicker unless you flat shift in the manual. It can be done but substantially increases your gearbox rebuild costs. On the road, for me there is no choice. Manual all the way. It substantially increases the level of engagement and adds a fantastic set of driving skills to lean and add to your skill set

For myself I always found it easier to heal toe when threshold braking… but I guess that could be because I didn’t really get good at heal/ toe u til I got in the track…. I also do it in two different ways depending on the turn… Now combining threshold breaking with some heal/ toe into trail breaking…. That’s the goooood fun stuff lol. I also rarely come down through all the gears if I don’t have to..( so mostly only when I can just skip one gear) like 5th to third gear for example…

Not gonna lie manual driving was intimidating at first, especially buying an Aircooled 911 as my first real manual car I had no idea what I was getting into. But after 10+ drives I’m so happy to drive that car. It’s such a great experience. It’s all about creating neural pathways like learning a new physical skill. And those that have developed physical talents get a similar pleasure response to that of driving manuals. Much like my days filming for swat instructors and some of the best competition shooters the more you dial to creating “muscle memory” or more correctly neural pathways, the more you can push your mind to be thinking about other operations. I see that same message being applicable to driving.

manual is the best I used to ride motocross as a teenager and looking back I wasn't using the bike to its full potential because I wasn't short shifting or using the clutch enough to keep the bike in a good rpm. You can gain so much speed and control if you're able to keep the car or bike in the right rpm range cause it effects everything from braking cornering and accelerating.

A fascinating conversation that just proves I made the right choice learning the manual transmission. I've been driving a stick for 7 years and have mastered the rev-matching technic.

Swell. Let’s hear overview then details for a 964 vs 993 vs 996/977 vs 991. Last track day I had the instructor wanted all braking done at end of straight before turning steering wheel for turn. Actually, clarify difference of 911 gen whatever vs comparable Boxster/Cayman. I’ve owned both at same time. I also drive a Lexus GSF (v8, rwd, magical torque vectoring diff, and a paddle responsive auto), thanks fellas, we are listening

nice convo! i will say tho, I find the term heel-toe a little misleading, for me at least it's more like "side-of -foot and ball/toe" and I roll over onto the accelerator pedal to blip.

So, in order to do it correctly, it is to squeeze the most performance out of the machine as well as not to cause unnecessary wear, and tear, by understanding how the machine and human works in harmony to get the optimal results and at the same time allow the driver to release and express himself

All these youngsters care about nowadays is how fast a car is. The majority of them don't know how to drive a manual, but will argue all day long how cumbersome it is as a daily lol. The fact of the matter is is that they don't know how to drive manual, and due to that, they ultimately don't care about driver connection. The thing is, once you know and understand true driver connection with a manual, the whole "manual is cumbersome as a daily" doesn't even matter, nor does it matter if you are slower than the same equivalent car that has an auto-box. These things don't matter because you, as a driver, are having so much more fun, and having more of a mind sensation and connection with your car, on the daily.

Meh...if the automatic was invented first people would be saving, "save the auto!" Some people are just more nostalgic, want more engagement, and get bored with flappy paddles. I've had both and IMHO it just depends on setting accurate expectations...wrong expectations for the wrong car and you'll be disappointed. Great topic and videos.

We need more people buying manuals to keep them around - doing my part with 20+ over the years and 5 manuals currently in the garage. I can not stand automatics - my wife has a PDK 992 and it completely ruins the car for me.

I don't know if you listened to this conversation, or if you are just super ignorant, or both, but nowhere in this conversation was them saying that a manual car is faster than a dual-clutched system. What they did talk about is the connection it gives the driver on a daily basis. Firstly, nobody, including F1 drivers, are driving F1 cars daily, on public rods. So your comparison in that, is void. Secondly, an F1 car is way more advanced than the average PDK, DCT, DSG, etc. street car. So your comparison in that, is also void. Thirdly, most F1 drivers own manual cars as what they drive each day, because they understand the connection, skill, and joy it brings. So your comparison in that, is also void. It was a nice try, but far from being a good attempt at having a good argument...

@@JacesOwnWorld I think you were being a bit harsh on the OP. It’s not just F1 but most forms of motorsport nowadays have ditched manual gearboxes for a variety of reasons. You are quite right however that we’re talking about road cars here and I assume specifically “the connection” to driving on public roads and not track day events. In that respect I agree with you, my daily (GR Yaris) and my weekend cars (F355 and MR2 Mk2) are all manual and I wouldn’t want to go back to paddle shifting . All that said, the future of manual gearboxes are out of our control, the manufacturers arms race for higher BHP, increase of hybrid technology creates torque demands manual transmissions just can’t support (not to mention the constant push for reduced emissions that only a non manual transmission can deliver). Kudos to Porsche for trying to keep manual shifting alive in some of their products but the writing is on the wall I fear and it’s only a matter of time before manual gear changing as we know it will be lost forever.
