Christmas is the PERFECT time to get into jazz and start to understand it better- and this isn't just my personal preference. There are specific reasons that Christmastime offers a great introduction to the genre.

In this video, I show why Christmas songs are both the perfect starting place for jazz newcomers, as well as one of the peaks of the artform for veteran listeners. I feel like "jazzy" Christmas tunes are sometimes written off as cheesy or made for background noise, but I couldn't disagree more. Improvisation- the definitive quality of jazz music- is made FAR more powerful by the use of Christmastime's shared vocabulary and repertoire. Just about anyone, including non-musicians, can engage in this music at a deep level due to its familiarity.
I think that there are three things that make Christmas songs the perfect setting for jazz:
0:00 Introduction
0:25 Improvisation
4:59 Reharmonization
7:32 Composition
