Converse and Vans are literally some of the best lifting shoes as well as driving shoes. You can never go wrong with a flat sole that allows you to articulate your balance.

Deadlifting in converse actually helps. Flat soles shoes prevent you from leaning forward in a deadlift and/or lose your balance. Converse are flat soles.

Would something like Altra 0 drop shoes work also? They are more cushiony and fit my feet better than a lot of other flat soled shoes. Idk if the cushion is a problem though .

@@animalcrackers8880 generally cushions don’t really help. I’m unfamiliar with the brand so I can’t really say anything about them. But as a rule of thumb, if you don’t have any problems, do it. If you don’t fall forward during the lift wear whatever shoes you want.

They don't allow your toes to spread properly which will decrease stability and cause bunions long term. Just cause this guy does it doesn't make it optimal or smart.

@@stefanstankovic570 I can understand that you need plantar flexion for squats and a narrow shoe can effect that. However, I’ve never had a problem with that and I don’t have narrow feet. I’ve since switch to squat shoes for squats, but you don’t need plantar flexion with deadlifts which is what I was talking about. Plus once the converse are broken in + not tying the shoelaces so tight they work just fine. But you do have a point there are other flat soles shoes people can consider. Chuck Taylor’s are still my choice though.

@@MightyCaucasian see, this is what happens when you dont know shit about shoes, but have an opinion about it. Yes, the type of shoe and form/shape of the shoe affects you and your lifting. If your shoes are fucked or you aren't using the right kind of shoes (they don't provide balance, support, freedom of movement, or things like slip resistance, etc.), you'll try to overcompensate for it (whether you're conscious about it or not) instead of focusing on doing a clean exercise. I'd say everyone that lifts should wear steel toe or composite sneakers at the very least, but i can't be a hypocrite bc i exercise sometimes barefooted...

There is a time and a place to cry "source?!?" Nobody is running a fucking research project on why converse are better than foam-sole running shoes, because the answer is obvious and widely understood. Do not forget that a huge proportion of human knowledge is built on anecdote and wisdom. Only recently was it actually proven that hypertrophy is more likely to be induced when muscles are "under more force, or when kept under the same force for longer...." @@flyguy0765 the reason I’ve learned is that converse isn’t as sturdy as lifting shoes. Your feet might drift a little bit to the side of the sole and cause you to lose a bit of the connection to the ground. This problem doesn’t occur in proper lifting shoes but might in soft shoes like converse. If it doesn’t then you’re fine but it it does, stop using converse

Lol, when I was starting to get in the heavier weights I learned that the hard way. I was doing farmers carries with 465lbs on a trap bar for about 100ft and halfway through I took a step slightly wrong and the foam under my foot shifted and I almost went down😂

My running shoes are merrell but I bought them specifically because I wanted running shoes that are flat and don’t have a ton of cushion, they are light and have arch shape support in the side.

@@rando_42 well specifically on deadlifts the angle of your feet matter during the lift, ideally you’d be doing it without shoes because you engage the posterior chain more now that your feet aren’t slightly elevated and tilted forward also you should have better balance and be able to lift more weight.

@Last American I already know converse are fine for (specifically) deadlifts. My point is both people came off poorly because their only argument is, “Because I said so.” He never proved her wrong, he just used the same argument, but tried to qualify by his resume. Plenty of people good at things don’t do them smartly, so a resume isn’t an explanation.

@@Yatrix7 false: converse is universally known as one of the best general weightlifting shoes for their flat soles which, under heavy loads, compress evenly, which almost no "training" or "running" shoes do. The next step up is a wrestling shoe. The step above that is a deadlifting or squat solid heeled shoe, which improves drive by through positional utilization of the calves. However, many still feel unstable in these over 500+, and go back to wrestling or converse as a result.

It depends what you're doing. With squats you want an elevated heel. That's why squat shoes have quite a bit of heel elevation. For deadlifts you want a flat sole

Converse/ barefoot is safer than lifting in a shoe with a heel on it. The worst to lift in is a mesh running shoe.

Converse have great grip on almost any gym floor, unlike some other shoes, specially running ones. Perfect for leg days. Converse are NOT meant for running though.

Far better than normal trainers, but definitely try squat shoes. Flats = feeling connected to the ground. Weightlifting shoes = feeling bolted to the ground.

@@casparbosch5615 really depends on the lift. For deadlift I would agree with barefoot lifting. For squat and overhead stuff lifting shoes help by putting you in a better position. However, all of this is also possible with normal shoes, we aren't professionnels

@@AATWT11 I’m talking about squatting. No matter the reason why you squat - to get stronger, get bigger, look better, etc. - flat bottom shoes are the best. Running shoes push your heels off the ground and puts more weight on your toes and less on heels. Flat shoes even the weight and put it on the heels, which is better. Same for deadlifts and some other exercises

I don't know if that lady ever tried wearing converse for lifting, but at least for me, it made a big difference. I was using running shoes in the beginning and knee pain increased, that's when I learned that ppl use lifting shoes or converse bcs they are flat and I was able to enjoy lifting a lot more bcs my knees wouldn't hurt as much when I started using them

Someone edited that part out. My experience is, you can lift heavy weights more easily while maintaining better form, with the arch support, sight heel elevation and sturdiness of squat shoes. Your feet feel bolted to the ground and your heels and balls of your feet aren't sore the next day. They're wonderful, I wear flats for everything else.

Many lifters use converse or lift barefoot so I think it has benefits, but I've tried them and with my totally flat feet it makes lifting painful for me compared with other more supportive shoes. But maybe it's totally my fault and I should look into "healing flat feet" videos and programs on line so I could hang with the cool lifter guys.
