In this video, I discuss how shame plays a significant role in triggering much of our depression and anxiety. The shame wound, in particular, gives rise to numerous negative emotions and immobilizes us. It's important to note that the shame we carry is often not solely about our actions but rather stems from the devaluation imposed upon us by others.
Recognizing this fact can alleviate a substantial portion of the burden we impose on ourselves through self-criticism. Understanding that this shame has been injected into us like a poison by others, provides a valuable perspective, enabling us to address the issue more directly. When we diminish the significance of those who have poisoned us with shame in our minds, it empowers us to administer the antidote to healing shame: Self-Compassion.
While mindfulness is a crucial and well-taught method for combating anxiety and depression, it sometimes overlooks a vital component: Self-Compassion. Mindfulness entails the loving awareness of moment-to-moment experiences, whereas self-compassion involves the loving awareness of the experiencer. It emphasizes the importance of holding ourselves first before we can effectively hold our experiences.
