From an engineering point and thousand of miles done in an N57 data-logging, I can tell you that Swirfflaps do not increase fuel consumption and are there only for emission purposes and that is to increase EGR gas flow at lower rpm'/load and in the cruise. Remove them in conjunction with EGR removal only and you will see massive gains in MPG. Swirl flaps should not be removed while EGR is still functioning

Bullshit, you just need to keep them clean. It is quite easy to remove intake manifold in M47/M57 engines, you need to remove it while replacing glow plugs, it is good opportunity to clean intake manifold and check swirl flaps condition. Done it twice. There is also an option to replace intake manifold with reinforced (brass) swirl flaps, and that's what I would suggest in older engines.

Yes, I'm doing the replacement now and it is basically built into the gasket. The design is much better and the software also is improved to prevent the breakage by looking at the voltage at the motor. If it detects a large voltage or current draw, then the flap is disabled. Carbon basically is preventing the flaps from opening properly. I have a garage full of black carbon. Who thought this was good for the environment needs to be bought in front of a congressional hearing! The emission standards don't take into account of the impact of actually replacing all these parts? What about the economic impact? I'm sure the average car owner would has to pay a dealership to replace the intake manifold would just toss the car out after a few emission part failures. Look at the owners manual for the diesel - in Canada - it says replace all the emission related parts at 160,000 Kms! Yes, the NOx and O2 sensors are included in the regular maintenance with the text saying the emissions will increase past this point. This is rediculous. We need a law for emission parts to last the life of the car or to be fixed by the manufacture. Watch how quickly the life will increase of the parts.

I do not agree at all, wait until one of those flaps brakes and goes to one of your cylinders and we talk later :). For me BMW it is the easiest cars to maintain if you buy of course used one. Rule nr. 1. Remove those Swirl Flaps - they are useful, that is BMW way of fucking up your engine, do you know that over the time they brake 2. Send it to electrician or if you know to do it by yourself, disable the EGR - you do not need that shit. BY doing these two together you gain mpgs. 3. CRANKSHAFT PULLEY, it will fail usually after 200.000 KM - replace it find a good one like corteco part for instance, and when it brakes it doesn't cause a huge problem, you cannot drive it, you have to tow it and replace the shit. In the past I think for instance let us take e39 bmw crankshaft pulley was all metal, never did it fail, as technology is progressing they are doing mixtures rubber plastics all that shit which over some years they brake, yes it gives better stability when the engine runs, but yet they brake and the MOST IMPORTNAT PART . 4. TIMING CHAIN KIT - a must at 200 000 KM. Change that timing chain kit on time. because I do not like engines when they get fucked up, it will never be like factory made, replacing all that shit after it is painful. Other parts are normal parts that you service them when needed. I have n57 300 000 km on the clock, never had issues, still the engine works brilliantly.

Swirl flaps don't increase the amount of air into a cylinder when closed, what the swirling air does is improve fuel and air mixing partly as a result of the angle it enters the combustion chamber (like you said) but also because of the increased air speed, which helps light throttle emissions, power and economy.

This with screws falling in to engine is bit of a lame. - throttle bodies flaps are since beginning of time held by screws and usually what is done is that you "punch" in back side of your screw and there is nothing that can "unscrew" it. Screw becomes bit notched and does not come out if you do not grind it off. Oil catch can should help to minimise soot build up, and skip annoying intake manifold cleaning. On my Pierburg intake manifold screws are glued and they do not come off. I think I can only brake them.

What nonsense is that diagram; Where are the intake valves? That "tumble" and "swirl" makes no sense when you take into consideration intake valves. Even if that air is the density of water it won't continue swirling into the cylinder. For actual swirling in the cylinder, you need to adjust/design the angle of the valve relative to the cylinder. For any Opel owners that run on to this video, they are "stuck" open on mine, they have them designed to stay open in case of most failures. No mpg changes on the open road, maybe a tad worse in the city but slightly better throttle response on low rpm. If you haven't cleaned your EGR inlets in a while - leave the flaps "broken".

I do occasionally put the car in sports/sports+ just to other get a smile on my face, show off to mates the insane torque, sometimes do traffic light style launch, but I always do take care of it and engine it’s looked after and I’m at 60:40 Motorway:City driving ratio The car is currently at 88k (was 81k when I got it)

George Austers I don’t want to sound like a dick, mate.. but I beg to differ considering my flaps&housings had already started cracking (may be a one off) But that a side. From a preventative maintenance point of view. Removing them, along with the egr. Saves you from having these issues in the future. It’s a common fault on BMWs and a trip to dealership will be VERY expensive. Spending £600+ on one part + labour, on a 10 year old car seems a bit ridiculous. Especially when it’ll just happen again. Keep it up my man 👌

Hi, I have a mk6 golf 2.0 TDi 110 bhp. It starts up fine but after a minute it idles very rough (car shakes, headlights flicker, revs drop...sounds like its going to break down) for about 5-10 mins. Once it warms up, it runs fine, drives fine and doesn't smoke. Had a engine light on, code stated it was the swirl flap motor. So got a swirl flap delete and an egr delete. Now no engine light, but the problem remains. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sid.

I've got an N47 with the brass bar going through the intake for the swirl flaps. The end flap was badly worn: where the bar goes through, as if the flap was stuck and the bar wasn't, causing friction/wear on the plastic flap. It was so worn that it was about to fall off. Luckily we spotted this beforehand and removed the offending flap. 135k on the clock.

Does anybody know what is the position of the flaps when the engine is off? I have removed the actuator first and then I struggled a bit with the intake manifold so when I got it out the flaps might have turned. Now I'm not sure in what initial position should I put it back - the square rod allows shut or open initial setting. Another question, did anyone reset flap actuator adjustment/resetting with ista?

My BMW independent mechanic mentioned a manifold leak (not sure from where but there is lot of carbon soot built up around manifold & cover). My 2008 X3 E83 N47 2.0d is showing 3 glow plugs faults, so while we are replacing Glow plug might get manifold replaced. Was going to order cheap Manifold without flaps from eBay but he advised to buy one from reputable parts supplied with flaps and actuator motor given Genuine costs $2.5k in Aus. So after having seen your video it explains why he asked me to stick to original setup. Very nice animation by the way. You X3 N47 videos have really helped me understand how my car drives. Hopefully with your helpful advice and Timing chain hanging in there, I can get from 200k km to 250k before I dump this car. Not sure if I want to touch any of injectors just yet, one of them is starting to leak very slight diesel though)

@@AZG1164 remapping could compensate, but do yo have a DPF with m57? bcause without swirl flaps - it makes a lot more smokes at low rpm, and your system and dpf wont like it, it will cause more frequent dpf cleanings, maybe dpf problems in long term.. and diesels likes to run at low rpm.. as you know.. but if you dont have a DPF, then... its your choice, but I hate when I dont have low rp torque especially when.... 3000ccm...

There can't be oil in the manifold unless the breather filter is blocked it will draw oil fumes in to the turbo and block up the manifold plus the EGR valve plus all the filter on the exhaust system( badly serviced)
