Video games are meant to be Fun. Call of Duty became the most popular game in the world through leading the industry with innovation. In recent years, however, it has relied on nostalgia and remastered content to remain the best-selling game in the world. Rather than continue to innovate and create the best games possible they rely on a successful formula built around returning old content and skill-based matchmaking. And why would they change when it works so well?
Cod (modern warfare 3, mw3) specifically has always been a casual, arcade shooter, and yet, in recent years it feels anything but casual. Long gone are the days of returning home from work and sitting down for a relaxing game of Call of Duty. It feels although a large portion of the Call of Duty community complains everyone "sweats" while simultaneously sweating themselves.
COD in 2009 was a cultural icon largely responsible for taking video games as a whole, in to the mainstream popularising things like multiplayer games, video games on youtube and in general fostering a community like no other. During this time it was so positively revered but when you look at what call of duty has done for the gaming industry since, its... not a lot. instead they hold on to things that made them successful in the past like remastered maps, guns, and characters. as well as implementing engagement based matchmaking (worse than skill based matchmaking).
The problem is now it tries to position itself as a live service game despite coming out with a new full price game every year. And not only this but truthfully, even if call of duty was free, times have changed its no longer 2009 and video games must continuously innovate to keep up with the times, and cod does not do that.
While every other video game in the shooter genre embraces competitive play, cod discourages it and gets away with it. SBMM is designed to maximise your retention as well as The amount of money you spend in the game on bundles and other microtransactions. and they can only use this because it is still considered a "casual" shooter.
Every other fps in the market has potential for growth. What this means is that they consistently try to make the best game possible to maximise customers. Call of duty in comparison is simply trying to retain its possition as the biggest fps on the market, and so what we get every year is limited innovation, rushed projects that follow a set formula that has been proven to work.
