You never read the nearby letters written to Gaetan informing him that (1) his younger sister just died and (2) everyone else from the school of the cat had died. Right before the wealthy ealdorman (examine his house) refused to pay a measly sum that even most peasants (like farmers, blacksmiths, even bards) can afford (all Witchers are already underpaid), he had just found out everyone he had ever loved was dead. He was in the middle of the grieving process, which includes rage/anger.

I always spare Gaetan. There’s a piece of lore, from the games at least, that states cat witchers emotions were not dulled during their mutation, but enhanced, making them volatile and unpredictable. Combine this with a rich and greedy villager trying to cheat him out of a contract he could have died trying to complete by luring him into a barn just to kill him? It’s like throwing a torch into a pile of fireworks. He went overboard, no doubt, but he shows remorse and I can’t help but feel sympathetic.
@thexith

Yes, his anger was passionate in the moment, but his remorse and guilt were equally as passionate after he calmed dow. It's ignorant to assume he acted out of sheer malice when we have no clue how badly affected his mental state was because of the Path's brutal nature. Of course this would be a different story of morality if it happened in a civilized world like ours, but we can't apply the same guidelines of justice to the Witcher universe. Thanks for the comment and for sharing your thoughts, it's appreciated!

All true but how do we know the villager was trying to cheat him? Could be the villagers knew they couldn't afford a Witcher but needed him so they lied about how much they'd pay. Main reason I didnt trust the Witcher is bc his story didn't match up with what the child said at least not completely.

@@josuke4448 Geralt says that sure, but still couldn't bring myself to spare the Witcher. In the end sure kill the guy that's wealthy take your agreed pay and give the rest to the other villagers then leave. Don't kill the entire village. Imagine what he did to that child mentally. As Geralt says their profession is on its last legs and people won't soon forget that massacre. It's just my opinion but coin isn't a reason to slaughter villagers. That's what bandits do not witchers.
@josuke4448

@@pattritle9499 He didn't do it over coin. He did it because they tried to kill him just so they wouldn't have to pay. If they hadn't, he probably would have taken something of his choosing and moved on, or threatened them until they caved, just as Geralt has done before. When your profession is to risk your life for people, only to be turned on and almost murdered because the very people you help are cheapskates, he had every right to react the way he did. Now he went overboard, 100%, but at the same time, nobody knows for sure if the villagers themselves weren't also in on it. Gaetan lost control, but I saw remorse once he came back to his senses. I think that in the harsh world of The Witcher, if somebody is willing to play with fire, they need to be prepared for the whole barn to burn down with them.

It was a tough call. I didn't want to kill him. Witchers shouldn't kill witchers. But in the end I put him down. If he'd stopped the killing at the barn, I'd probably let him walk. Those bastards tried to cheat and murder an honest witcher doing his job. But Gaetan didn't stop at the barn. He killed every singe person in the village, and spared the girl. Not because she was without question and innocent bystander, and a child, but because she reminded him of his sister. What happens when he doesn't feel so sentimental about the next kid that's not so familiar? I didn't feel good about it. What happened wasn't his fault. I think his walk in life on the Path has been unforgiving, and unfair. But he had gone rabid. The next time he snaps, people will die. Innocent people will die. It never feels right to put down a rabid dog, but it has to be done, or else people will get hurt. I don't know if I was right to kill him. But I do know this... If I were ever driven to the point of being unhinged enough to slaughter an entire village of people, not even bat an eye in the wake of the aftermath, and with a degree of certainty know that eventually it would happen again... I'd want someone to put me down too. And I think Geralt would agree to that.
@thexith
3 жыл бұрын
This is a really good take on this topic. Especially the rabid dog analogy. On the other hand though, I don't think it's right for Geralt to be his executioner, given the history, hardship and scarcity of Witchers on the path. Gaetan is a testament to the nearly inevitable fate of Witchers who either don't sell out to kingdoms or die prematurely. Geralt managed to escape this fate due to his destiny, and circle of loyal friends. Gaetan on the other hand is a different story, he's someone who was swallowed and regurgitated by the indifference of men. Both arguments have a lot of logical sense, but I personally don't believe book/lore Geralt would, knowing what he knows about himself and his past hardships, willingly kill a wounded Gaetan.

I didn't kill Gaetan because I believed he deserved to die. I believed he had to die. Because anybody innocents he kills from that point forward is on me. Because I could have stopped it, but instead I did nothing. I think you are right. Gaetan was dealt a losing hand, and he got screwed for it. Best strategy Don’t save him and get the saddle and next in New game + save him
His story checks out, the girl does say that they went into the barn and that's where the violence started. Now I am fairly certain they had it planned out in advance, find it hard to believe the villagers just spontaneously came up with the idea in the heat of the moment. If he wanted to rob them, why even go kill the Leshen or argue?! This is a situation where I spared him and I genuinely felt like it was the right thing to do all things considered + he was genuinely touched and grateful by that act of sympathy which he obviously isn't used to getting. I remembered that quest in (SPOILER) The Mystery of the Byways Murders, where in the end after Geralt killed the monster the villager was saying something like "Well we didn't hire you... but.." and Geralt just interrupts him saying something like "But damn right you should pay me!" and the guy agrees and gives you a reward. Also I had a flashback to that piece of shit in Novigrad who tried to sell out Triss to the Witch Hunters instead of paying her, he got off with having to pay double, but if Triss for example was seriously wounded he could have had his head chopped off. And today while playing I picked a fight and killed 4 Redanian soldiers because I was sick of them calling me a mutant piece of shit for no reason ALL THE TIME. -_- And even though the bastards drop no loot it was still satisfying to do. :P Now for Jad Karadin... - for him I made the mistake of letting him go the 1st time I did it but then like INSTANTLY I knew I fucked up, I felt sick in my stomach so I had to reload and kill the bastard instead. Lambert is in a much better position to judge that situation because he knew Aiden so well. Honestly Karadin's excuses sounded to me like excuses that the Crones and Whoreson Junior made to claim Ciri was bad towards them. :P

The Witchers being emotionless narrative has somewhat been debunked by Geralt's story and the actions of other Witchers. It's more of a folks tale rather than the truth. Yes, they are taught to surpress their emotions during training, but this is to survive the brutality of the Path, not because of the nature of the mutations. Gaetan is an example of the brutal life Witchers are subjected to, which then resulted in his aforementioned act of rage; indeed confirming he has emotions. The entire point of the Witcher stories is to infact show how intricate and misunderstood Witchers are.

That was the initial plan, but after Renfri talked to Stregebor and he told her that he didn't give a crap if she butchered all of Kovir, she was going to leave peacefully...until she saw Geralt butchering her gang and had a mental breakdown. The point of "The Lessser Evil" was that Geralt's initial plan of not getting involved was correct, but he ended up screwing up by discarding it at the last minute and considered Stregebor as the "lesser evil" which pissed off an already broken and disillusioned Renfri after Geralt was literally the only person that DID NOT automatically saw her as a monster for having been born during the Dark Sun, and told her that becoming one or not was her choice. And before you say "but Renfri's gang shot Geralt first", yeah, after he was running at them sword in hand like an anime character, so no, that was not an excuse either. The one problem I have is that you simply chose to believe everything Gaetan said. We only have one side of the story and some things don't add up like: Gaetan says that the villagers said that they can only pay him so little because of the war and so on. But the village head must have said this to him while sitting in his lavishly furnitured room. So it must have been obvious that this is a lie. So why would the village head tell such and obvious- and easy to spott- lie? Gaetan could have just pointed out that he can easily get the money by selling some of their belongings. So I'm not sure Gaetan is telling the truth here. We only know his side of things. Maybe Gaetan is lying about everything. Maybe he wanted more that they've originally bargained, seeing them being very wealthy. They didn't want to give it to him - he threatens them- they say they will pay him with what's in the barn- they try to stab him-he kills everybody. That being said, we don't know the truth here. So what are the facts. Gaetan killed a bunch of innocent people in addition to the ones that (supposedly) ripped him off. Would Gerald put it on himself to kill him? Gaetan is not clealy evil. Gerald kills things that harm innocents, which Gaetan clearly did (and is implied has done so in the past), so he might be a loose cannon. But Gerald would also only kill, if he gets an reward and here he is not getting one, so why would he kill Geatan? He is not the law/ police. One reason could be to safe the reputation of witchers and respectively how he and his witcher brothers are treated. Could that be enough of a reason to kill Gaetan? Or would he sympathize with how Gaetan has been treated in the past and let him live...

Much as I feel for Gaetan, I think the right decision is to kill him. He can't answer, with any kind of immediate conviction, that he _won't_ go overboard again. He bitterly admits to, even expects that condemnation from Geralt. No lecture, just draw your sword and have it out and get it over with. While it isn't entirely his fault, since Cat Witcher mutations seem to create more emotional instability, Gaetan is still nonetheless always one bad day away from a massacre. Had he stopped at the self-defense and killed only those villagers immediately attacking him, that'd have been one thing. But he didn't. So I'd have to kill him. It isn't personal, it's just the ethical calculus of it all. He's a time bomb ready to go off again. The individual virtue of the individual actors don't matter. Their intentions don't matter. What matters is Gaetan will probably kill innocents again. That he feels remorse for it means little if there's no path for him to reform his behavior. The villagers are bad, but this also doesn't matter. Two wrongs don't make a right . . . and they're dead in any case. So it's moot to consider what they'll do in the future.

I think the beauty of the Witcher is the often moral ambiguity. It's never truly about which decision is right, it's almost always about which choice is least wrong. Never is that more clear than the children of the big. Do what the cronies want and let them eat the poor orphans, or rescue the spirit and let the spirit save the children while slaughtering all the adults. And the crones kill Anna causing the Baron to hang himself. Both choices have their merits and their serious flaws. It just whittled down to which is the one you can live with. The Witcher moral dilemmas mirror real life.

This is the tricky part for me. It's likely that, in that moment, I would've killed him. Not because I think he deserved it, but just because he killed almost the whole village when he lost it, and Geralt correctly points out that this is likely not the first time he's lost control like this, nor will it be his last. I don't pity the scumbags who used him and then tried to metaphorically (and possibly literally) slit his throat, but a lot of likely innocent people died, too, and if it happens again, well...then it's partly on me, for letting him go, right? But part of the brilliance of the Witcher games' storytelling is how you really _can't_ predict the future reliably enough to make decisions like this. If you're right, then sparing him _might_ have been the right call, it's just one that's impossible to predict in the moment. At the very least, the last we see of him, he hasn't killed anyone else.

So is Lambert and that's just his personality 😂🤦♀️ And Gaetan even snapped out of it once he saw the little girl, he didn't even mean to kill everyone, he was wounded, cornered and scared and every villager was a potential threat to him. Notice how not only the villagers in the barn had weapons but the ones outside too? The whole village must have known, since it's common to collect coin for the Witchers service and in this case they collectively decided to screw him over and watch him die. It's not like they were short on money, the elder was rich af. So if Gaetan still wanders out there and kills a few greedy, cruel peasants, so be it. World is better off without them 😅

@@tinycharlie6694 It's really quite simple: Another witcher likely would've stopped at killing the guys who stabbed him, then told the village to go fuck themselves and walked away. If the villagers attacked after that, they would have stopped at killing the ones actually being aggressive. They wouldn't have gone on an omnicidal rampage and killed literally everyone, innocent or otherwise. There is absolutely zero actual proof the whole village was in on the con, and he left nobody else to provide an opposing viewpoint. He didn't even spare the other children, who _definitely_ weren't in on it. Practically went psycho. He _only_ stopped butchering the whole place on a whim: The girl just so happened to remind him of his sister. Plus, Geralt asks him explicitly if this sort of thing has happened before, and he doesn't answer in a way which makes it obvious it has. He's clearly very dangerously unstable, far more so than other witchers. Life isn't so cheap, even in the Witcherverse, that I can personally sanction letting this guy go afterwards, no matter how sympathetic his backstory is. I would be choosing to let more innocent people die in the coming years.

@@Phoenix-214 he didn't kill any children because there were no their corpses and the whole village heard their argument so they know too much and would've not let him be if he had spared the rest. gaetan also can enter cities again according to a collector in novigrad it means he restores his reputation by doing good deeds if he is spared.

Amazing video and lovely ethical analysis! This is by far one of my favourite quests, and definitely a choice I struggle with! However, after some thinking I decided to kill him. Gaetan’s having a very hard time, and the peasants who tried to kill him are awful people. If Gaetan only killed them, he would’ve walked away for all I care. With that being said, there were a few things that helped me make my decision: - He did not only kill the people who attacked him nor the ones that stood in his way or were nearby, he went up to each peasant’s house and cut them down. This detail indicates to me that this was not only a loss of control, but a on-the-spot decision to wilfully massacre the whole village. - He only spared the girl because she resembled his sister. Were she not to have such luck, she’d likely also be cut down. - He suspiciously dodges Geralt’s question on wether or not this was a repeating occurrence, leading us to believe that he has done this more often, and likely will do so in the future too. There will be many more villages with children who are either dead, or orphans. - His actions significantly damage the Witcher’s guild further, inspiring more prejudice, paranoia, and hatred for the profession. - After having had time to cool down, Gaetan displays a rather callous and remorseless attitude towards the massacre. He, furthermore, displays a lack of honesty and honour by lying to Geralt about wanting to take Swallow while actually using a surprise attack, indicating a problematic personality. - Witchers kill monsters, and the world of The Witcher emphasises that this can often be humans too, including Witchers. The way I see is that the solution to the monster has done more damage than the monster itself. - It is evident that Gaetan has a bounty, possibly indicating problematic behaviour previous to the massacre.

A truly refreshing take, given how most of the moral busybodies in these comments are like _"Durrr, bad Witcher BAD - must kill for 'GreAteR gOOd'..!"_ For me, it's a no-brainer... fact is, he performed the contract as agreed on, & had every right to demand the proper payment - everything that happened afterwards is on those greedy lying villagers... Does it necessarily justify him slaughtering the whole bunch..? No. Does it make the reasons behind it understandable? _Absolutely!_

This is mostly because of the way people play this game, most detach themselves from Geralt's personality, and mold him into their own image of morality. You don't even need to read the books to understand how a true representatiom of Geralt would act in situations like this. Thanks for the comment, really appreciate it 👍

Besides, Gaetan was just defending himself and removing possible witnesses. The rest of those dung shoveling bastards would have legit formed a mob if given a chance anyway.

But he is massacre who kill innocent people without a second thought, I know what they or the rich man's action was honorable but the women and others didn't had to die at least but you are right he should be spare. Heard stories of something or someone who attacked rich people and killed them. If we let the 3 devil who had been eating children run freely, he should be spare and he is kind of good he didn't killed the child even though that has bad effects on her.

This guy slaughtered an entire village -- most of whom were helpless villagers that had nothing to do with the ones that actually tried to kill him -- and judging by his comments, this wasn't the first time he went on a rampage. Should I let him go so he can go on another rampage? No -- bloody hell no. Witchers kill monsters and that's exactly what I did to this freak of nature. This guy stopped being a witcher the moment he decided to become the very thing he was trained to destroy -- a mindless animal, killing without cause or reason. He did more damage to those people than the leshen he was hired to kill.

Normaly you shulden't spare Gaeten, he did it before and probably do it again. He also make a bad name for witchers. But in the witcher world even a psychopath like Gaetan have a chance to be a good man just like Anna Henrietta sister in blood and wine.

I kill the fucker every time, and now this video has lead me to enjoy doing it. What a shitty argument. If your a victim then you can justify murdering an entire village. So did Stalin. "Kill the Boy, Jon Snow!" -Aemon Targaryen

Conventional morality, whats right and wrong doesn't apply to this universe, it's way more intricate in terms of how society functions. Nothing is ever as black and white as you currently see it, and this sentiment is highly amplified in the Witcher universe.

@@jonathanvian2607Why do we keep circling back to real world events, how is our real world comparable to a fictional universe in which Witchers and mythical creatures are a reality. Politics, and even the way people function is different due to the nature of its inhabitants. Everybody is depicted as ruthless, selfish, greedy and somewhat xenophobic/racist; especially simple-minded peasants. This doesn't warrant what Gaetan did, and I was never apologetic about his actions after he killed his attackers, I just believe it isn't Geralt(The Butcher of Blaviken btw)'s job to decide the fate of a Witcher who's been tricked and fatally wounded in the first place, regardless of if he had a raging temper. None of this would've been initiated if he was payed properly. This choice is completely up to the player, but book-canon Geralt wouldn't take it upon himself to flaunt self-righteousness and deliberately kill him. Also, what is with your aggressive attitude, we're discussing a fictional event within the bounds and rules of a fictional world, none of my arguments in this video are based upon my real life beliefs, I'm working with how Geralt would approach this situation, and how utterly complex life is for everyone on the Continent.

I couldn't bring myself to spare Gaetan. The villagers agreed on over 120 crowns bc they knew if they offered the Witcher only 12 he wouldnt have accepted most likely. Yet they needed him to kill the leshen. So they lied. Sure you can call Gaetan a victim of the path but really he's a victim of his emotions. He should've accepted the crowns. That's just my opinion.

I guess you missed the part where the village elder lived like a king there and could've afforded to pay him. Instead, he planned to ambush him and probably collect some bounty on a Cat school Witcher. Just cause they're humans, doesn't automatically make them innocent
