As a newbie myself, i tried doing speedsculpts after your recommendation. And i would say if you are a complete beginner as me, then you should focus on normal projects, where you focus on small details, but it would be also extremely helpful if you once or twice a week do some speed sculpting, just to refine your skills. So i would recommend you just to mix both of these styles of sculpting.

Yesterday I made my first two 3D-models - your vid about the stylized male head gave me the kick to try it finally out. And now I'm so excited and want to learn so much more. So I purchased your two tutorials! 😁 And I also had to buy your 27h making of The Witch to observe the process! I hope my 2d drawing experiences speed the learning process up so that I can create good stuff in 3d too. Your vids helped me already so much more than some other tutorials on YT! Yeah I really feel like by the end of sculpt Jan, my work was deteriorating. At the begging of the month I felt like I was learning new skills everyday, and sculpting things I wouldn't normally try to. But by the end I was getting to a point where I didn't want to go for anything too ambitious and have no hope of being happy with what I put out, nor did I want to just do what I already knew I could do well quickly, and put out a rushed, lower quality version of it. So instead I just began narrowing my scope tremendously, both in what I'd try to sculpt and the techniques I'd use. Sometimes my passion is stoked by just focusing 100% on a folio piece for 2 months, inspiring me try new techniques and find solutions to problems, while tryna force several hours a day of throw away sketches does nothing for me. There's definitely a balance to be struck.
@yansculpts

For sure. There is only so much i can explain in one video, i actually plan to cover more subjects related to this one, one of them covering what you went through. The thing is no matter what method you use, you are bound to hit road blocks and these blocks might vary depending on the person. When you hit one, you should take a step back and asses what the problem is and find a solution for it. It might not have been very clear but i did not intend to say that speed sculpts is the only practice you should do, you should simply set aside time for it to your daily practice. Focused studies and projects should not be discarded, they are essential as well

@@yansculpts I'm with you, speed sculpts are an indispensable method of rapid development. My comment was an addition to the suggestion you made that if done wrong it can harm your development. One thing I have learned over the years was to use a technique with guitar playing which directly transfers to anything your learning. Start learning subject A, after a bit and you start feeling stress or your not learning take a 5 min break or 10 mins, come back to it. You will be amazed how fast your mind adapts and the stress is gone, learning almost anything. This has worked for me playing guitar for years and in my sculpting. The problem is life distractors and finding the time, most times just like practicing guitar we tend to make tons of excuses why should not do it.

What this all sounds to me is iterations, what Yan wants you to understand is where you stand in the timeline, YOUR timeline. This guy knows polygon sculpt, this other guy knows metaball sculpt process, this other guy yet knows a good technique on how to approach brows, so much so he finally understand a way to even start from brows, focusing on the original emotion he had in mind and then sculpting everything from that point out. Yan, and all the others have their own exploration done on sculpting and have their own unique history about it and what is brand new flash news for them might just be YOUR last week's discovery, a discovery that you might've explored enough to fully understand, and what happens when you 'fully' understand something ? It means anyone can come at you with a bunch of confusion about something and YOU wouldn't be confused AT ALL simply because you already know about that process, that configuration of things, that load of information, and you see from your INNER EYE everything that needs to be seen and understood, you get at the core ESSENCE of the understanding you have and from which you are finally able to get through from anywhere to anywhere, that is ultimately the master's path. Simply said, you don't know until you do know. Not knowing tells you what you need to know. Knowing tells you which way to go. If you don't know where to go, you need to explore/know something more in depths. If you do know where to go well that's it, you just need to do what needs to be done. XD Njoy ! Tks Yan !

I don't disagree with the video, but still I'd like to add- What helped me tremendously from raw beginner (in 3D modeling, not beginner animator/developer) was the reverse. Having a specific published personal game/video/project in mind, and taking it as slow as necessary with no pressure. If it's your first time, there is nothing NOTHING wrong with spending 30 days on a sculpt. (I can hear experienced artist screaming NO THAT'S WRONG!) But let me explain. I'm talking brand new beginner making an anatomically correct creature and working through how to retopologize, project, and bake when figuring out how to attach teeth/tongue from IMM, problems with too high poly counts causing the model to be broken up into parts- all those learning phases and tiny steps take time. What you should do is watch the video on zpheres- make your base model with spheres. Try 'animating' it and think of your end goal poses. Turn it into a really horrible looking abomination of a mesh. Dynamesh it, sculpt on it, keep referring to tutorials, sculpt some more, install a reference ap like pure ref, find loads of references, keep working at it and checking sculpting videos and working at it and asking questions until the fully rigged beastly creature with its sexy alpha maps, working tongue teeth and wings, is right there in front of you 40 days later. Now you know everything you really 'need' to know and can start speed sculpting different things while studying figure sculpting. Yeah pros can spend 1 day finding references and not so long making a concept sculpt and retopologize the whole thing in 4 hours. You can't just yet- that's fine. Just take it slow and learn every day and build and build until you are just as good. Watch heaps of videos but not too much or you'll forget all the techniques. Which is why a specific goal is important. You won't forget.

Good day Yan I watched the whole video and sadly I would like to make some points. This process is actually called sketching in traditional arts and it is a very powerful tool to harness your skills, every tip you gave was 100% good and I could not agree with you more. Practise makes perfection. The only thing I would like to share is that you need some corrective, feed back or whatever, other artists on same level should comment on your work and give out their opinion, not to change your current "sketch" but to improve upon the next one. While I was studding arts we were told to make 50 sketches every day, hands, feet, legs, body, whole models just to be able to capture the movement the poses and the feel of the body. So great video!

Love your video Yan and always appreciate the advice. i try these things every so often but always run out of energy since im used to being disciplined. A video i would love to see is a months worth of sculpt idea starting small and easy and very slowly ramping up. a little like sculpjanuary but instead each idea is meant to go from super easy up to intermediate. e.g. day 1 sculpt a apple or fruit, day 15 sculpt eye nose and mouth, day 30 sculpt upper torso and head. start super easy and build up real slow. i think to many people like me immediately go straight for the full head and put themselves off by starting to hard. Just a suggestion, but i love your work no matter what you do as its so helpful to us stragglers.

I sketch a lot. Speed Sculpting is no different, just in 3D. The first session of Speed sculpting should be about getting familiar with the process, developing your own work flow, learning the program you are using, even learning to work with and around the limitations of your hardware. Following sessions should start hitting on aspects of a model you are not familiar with. Simple enough. But this can be as focused as mastering the details on an eye, a finger, a single muscle group. making mechanical objects and so on. Eventually you are working on doing completed figures and objects. IF you draw of paint you will want to be working toward possibly duplicating you 2D work in 3D, if for no other reason than to give your targets to hit. You will go on to finalizing projects, making animation ready character models and the like. It does not end but most importantly this is supposed to be fun, and if your style and.or range evolves all the better.

Dear Yan, someone recommended to me your channel on Blender discord and this is your first video I watched (and I liked it, and I agree with you on it in general). Btw, I don't do CG for a job or plan to, but rather do it as a hobby and for pet projects. So I'm from the beginning ready to forget about my CG work though only upto a point. Since a person spends a way bit of time/energy on any CG or work, he would naturally have attachment to it. So asking people to forget about it is kinda okay (given the purpose that they don't get overly attached) yet not okay, and furthermore suggesting to throw it away 'everytime' might not be the best advice/solution either. 1. I would practice speed sculpting when I can, create some wacky things as well as some planned things, and put a stop to it when the time limit is exhausted (well a few minutes +- is natural given human psychology), but not throw it away completely. Instead, I would put it in a different folder than my usual blender files so that it doesn't show up in my recent work, hence acheiving the objective of being able to 'discard' something. 2. Next, I can revisit my part 'failures' or 'ugly ones' as some may call it after a prolonged time, similar to looking at 5-10 year old photo of yourself, so as to acheive the objective of long term differentiation. It is like the case of human height. One is not able to observe the subtle changes in the height of a person if you are around them everyday. But if you meet them after a long time, you can understand the difference quiet clearly. It has its benefits. 3. Also, perhaps after 2-3 years, one may have better CG skills, but may in turn find themselves lacking in the dept of 'imagination' or 'original concept'. Looking at your old work (which you had forgotten about) gives you a certain benefits in this case. Besides, it is possible to turn those near 'failures' into something new now with little effort compared to starting from scratch. Salvaging & Recycling is an important human activity! On a side note, please leave your finished product for a bit longer towards the end of the video (instead of ending the video short). It would be helpful. 20-30 seconds is not a big change on your side, but it is a significant one for the eye of those who watched the video attentively. Thank you again for your hardwork. Here is my artstation profile: www.artstation.com/someab , I would be happy to keep in touch with you. Good Day.

Hey! It isn't about throwing away your work, it is about detaching yourself from you individual artwork. I say this from personal experience and from what i see in most artists. It is almost as if we think that that one art we create defines us, but it is only a means to an end, adding points to our level. This was not the focus of this video so i didn't really go into that, but it is perfectly fine to keep your work to see your improvement, you don't have to actually delete them.

you have to know all commands before you can speed through them! and you cant speed through that so much. but what i get from this is that one should not lag or be lazy or be to slow, in ones modeling. on the other hand one can only put more thought into his work only if taking the time. ever heard the term speed kills.
@yansculpts

You got some of my points across but maybe not all. This is a method of practicing to be added to your daily work, but it is not to replace other methods. For example, slow focused studies is still important. You just learn different things from each method. Also, speed by itself is not good as i said in the video, it can be and usually is mistaken for being sloppy, which is understandable. Thanks for your feedback :)

It's like, "okey, i want to do something for practice purpose" and at the same time i'm saying "i dony know what to do". Should i look for concept arts? Blueprints? I'm stuck and i dont get an idea of how to make a progress

Thank you, KZitem for the good recommendation. Glad I clicked, interested to see more and learn more so I subscribed. Honestly, I'm going to try this over the summer. I have a thesis coming up in Gameart soon and I have to make 3D models and I want to improve A LOT before I get to that point. Sort of related: Is Blender better to use than Zbrush? Less focus on one free and one is expensive which is a better program overall for modeling/sculpting?
@yansculpts
5 жыл бұрын
Zbrush is a powerful program that focuses on sculpting, blender is also a powerful program but its sculpting tools aren't on par by themselves. I think it holds up strongly if you know how to use the program as a whole and utilise its many functions to work with the sculpting, so it is probably a more unorthodox way but it can yield great results. At the end of the day use which ever you prefer, they are just tools, like different brands of pencils

sculpting looks really impressive in Blender! I'm a longtime user of zbrush for sculpting and recently learning blender. It's definitely cool to see blender being so capable, and the ability to have multiple views of your sculpt is something I've always dreamed about in zbrush. Have you ever sculpted in zbrush and if so, how do you compare the two? Thanks, great video!
@yansculpts
5 жыл бұрын
Long time ago, i don't really compare them because to get the best of either you need to sculpt in a different way. Zbrush has its strong points and so does Blender :)

the things you have mentioned in the video are on point sculpting drawing etc doing these things every day will help you! But i do have to disagree with you on one point "these sculpts are going into the trash next to your pg18 mp4's" (right how did you know about those....) but showing your art to people is in my opinion also a good way to improve. people can see mistakes and errors you might not. and i think im not alone. it's a great video though. using these tips myself aswell!
@benhardwiesner6963
5 жыл бұрын
eriyo2000 Well but speedsculpts need that freedom of "Its only practice"... People work entirely different when they know that others will see this later. Normally you'd be right... but getting other opinions should really be seperated from speedsculpts. You dont want anything restrictive except the time. Only that way you get better very very fuckin fast. Speedsculpting daily is POWERFULL! Do that half a year and you can work in the industry, no joke. But if you as an example are a dude who always wants to sculpt hot chicks, it probably would be best for you to sculpt loads of hot chicks. That keeps motivated and improves the fastest simply because you do what you yourself like. If you now know that others will check out your works, you quickly stop doing just hot chicks and your motivation lacks. DAILY work requires loooads of motivation! That shit is not easy. If you're not 100% behind what you're doing, you waste time and efficiency in getting better with this method + you will most definitely stop working daily. Normally others are a huge bockade for chosing what you do......
@yansculpts

As Benhard explained, if you have in mind that you will show it to people it might stiffen your work which can cause several issues. You can still share for feedback of course just don't keep that in mind when sculpting. Plus, you can always ask feedback for focused studies/sculpts, something i plan to cover on the channel as well.

Will depend there is no rule on how long it takes, for example the afro girl took me 1h30mins i think (i mention it in that vdieo) but that is not always the results i get in that timeframe. You learn by practice no way around it

I mean, i can do the low poly stuff but i like most by sculpting but exporting it like that isnt good right? I want to know if i can sculpt a character and export it for game engines.
