You really should do a canine first aid/first responder course. Understand the basics of dog behaviour as well. So much more to it which is why gaining experience is important, walking someone else's dog is different from walking your own at first until you get to know each other then they become like part of the family which is an upside.

Thanks for sharing - I am looking into possibly starting my own dog walking business.. How would you recommend getting my first customers? I could hand out flyers in peoples letterboxes near me but is there anything else you would suggest? I did volunteer dog walking for a dog shelter in the past and so I have a little experience and also grew up with many dogs in the past and now got a staff :)

Hi! You definitely should start one! First, you should look to your own network circle and ask friends, family who have dogs if they are in need of a dog walker. From there, my best advice to get your first few clients is actually quite simple and I will do a video on this. Send an email to all the local dog walkers in your area introducing yourself and mention you have started a dog walking business. You then want to ask them if they have any clients they can’t handle or take on, that you would be more than happy to take them on yourself. This is hands down the easiest and best approach when starting out. Hope this helps.

If I were to do everything all over again, I would start heavy on social (FB and Insta), and write content daily for social and blog. Dan's advice is solid, you gotta tell everyone you know that you're now a dog walker and take dogs to local dog parks if possible. You can use those experiences to take photos and post. Though, nothing is faster than FB and Google ads, and I would argue FB is Queen. Good for you, you can do it, and best of luck!

Hi I am thinking of starting a dog walking company but am wondering how you schedule your walks. For example do you have set time slots throughout the day etc only because I am worried I am going to get clients that want all different lengths and times and it could get complicated. I am thinking of only taking 3-4 at a time but am worried about handling bigger dogs as well.

Hi. I am 16 and I am planning on starting a “dog business”. I would be dog sitting and dog walking. I am moving in with my mom next month so I wanna start then. There are a lot of dogs in her area. I just don’t know where to start. Like where should I put the price at? Do I really need insurance? Do I have to provide the things I need like leases and stuff? Do I really need to need to start with a company. I am not planning on making it a long term business just for the next year an a half. So i don’t think I need to do all that extra stuff. I am planning on just making flyers with the needed information on them. But if you have any suggestions or you can help me in any way, I would really appreciate it.

Hi Angelica, I love your enthusiasm at such a young age. I would highly recommend you get some experience perhaps at a dog kennels, a pet shop etc. Being 16 you won't get the dog walking insurance you need and you 100% need insurance. Have patients and spend this time to soak in as much knowledge as you can. I wouldn't start a dog walking business for temporary income. Most of your customers will be looking for someone that can walk their dog longterm.

Hi, great video, very informative. I’m thinking of becoming a dog walker as I broke my back about 5 months ago and can realistically no longer do my job anymore which is carpentry. So, I’m just wondering how physical the job is. Is it more physical than you would think? I put my ideas over to a few friends of mine and they seemed to think it might be more physical than I thought, I.e having lots of dogs pulling on leads might be quite strenuous and also lifting dogs in and out of vehicles also.

Hello! I love your ambition, but I wouldn’t recommend at your age due to insurance purposes mainly. You may have all the experience at such a young age, but insurance companies won’t go near you. I would continue to build on your experience to eventually open your own dog walking business when you are older :) patience is key! No need to rush ;) all the best. Dan

Nigel Pearson I’m hoping this is a troll comment as I completely disagree. Firstly that’s not fair on the customer at all. Most clients absolutely adore their dogs and having a dog walker they entrust that person which can be tough to begin with. Having no insurance automatically defers that trust for a start. It’s not even the insurance, it’s experience. If a dog attacks another dog, I would assume a 13 year old would have limited experience on what to do if that scenario were to happen. You can’t just be like oh what are the odds of a disaster, that is a terrible mindset you’re working with peoples dogs! How can you also assume he will make a lot of money?
@danfothergill

Nigel Pearson I agree with you, but experience can be gained in various ways instead of jumping in to the deep end from the get go! He’s super young and I’m talking from my own experiences (which does not mean anything I’m saying is correct) it would be a better idea to gain the needed experience with dogs and other pets/animals wherever that may be perhaps at a dog kennels etc, before trying to start a dog walking business or in fact any business. I started with washing cars when I was a kid and learnt how to provide a service and get paid for it. Now it’s walking dogs. Patience!

Is it lonely?
@danfothergill
4 жыл бұрын
Chris Williams yes and no. It can be if you let it become lonely.. I have staff and can go on walks with them or meet up with them. Same with other dog walkers you get to know the dog walkers who walk at the same times as you and you can even arrange to meet them once you get to know them more. I wouldn’t say it’s as lonely as some other jobs or businesses. I quite like walking and listening to a podcast though.

Depends on where you walk. I walk in popular location and see other dog owners regularly. Also people you do meet are less stressed than people you meet in an office!
