Kill team is great but the season structure and normal GW strangeness makes it somewhat obtuse to new players. I’ve had a few people (40K players) say they looked at it and either didn’t know what they needed or thought they needed a lot more than they did. The season structure and focus on narrative also makes people hesitant to jump into the middle. Two things would fix this: Include the little core rule book in the essentials kit and include faction rules in the faction boxes.
@TheCommandPhase
8 ай бұрын
I totally agree that GW should make it a lot easier to get hold of the rules for each team. I mean the small book inside each of the bigger kits with 2 teams in or the end of year annual tend to be out of date very quickly. I'd highly suggest if they are still interested in trying to play going onto wahapedia to get the rules and such from there. A small rulebook for that accessory kit would also be a great shout! Not everyone is going to need new terrain or the teams from a starter box set. That being said, the second hand market could may well be the answer to grab one cheap. I did that to get the Leviathan 40K rulebook over 50% cheaper than buying new.

Totally get that, there are a lot of models on my painting table being neglected for a full 2000 point army. While the game itself isn’t any more complicated really, I found the barrier of the amount of models needed for such a big game and then remembering what each of the units does being my barrier. Kill team was a blessing for my game group, as most of us don’t play so often, so 40K games end up being 3-4 hours with all the pauses looking up things and checking rules. Whereas we could do a small campaign in kill team in the one day a month we normally meet up! Thank you so much for taking the time to view and comment on this video, really appreciate it! For the board gamers out there, IF, if you can find it, the warhammer fireteam is a nice "kill team" in board game form. It is a very good primer for killteam (rules are almost exactly the same) and if you like how fireteam plays then it will be very easy to move into the actual kill team. That being said the fireteam board game is one of those smallbox barnes and noble game that came out 2+ years ago and atm can be quite a pain to find. If by some miracle you actually find at Barnes for MSRP of 35$ then yeah, it is a great buy. If you aren't able to find fireteam in stores then you will more than likely have to start paying "ebay prices" and heck at that point the offical kill team starter set is probably a better deal.

Glad you enjoyed the video and a great idea for something to follow up with. I'm currently editing another video at the moment, but I'll add that to the list as I'm sure a lot of people will find that helpful. In terms of getting started with kill team, I'd probably suggest getting the starter box, or Octarius if you can find it. For two teams and terrain plus the rules. There are errata's to the core rules on the Warhammer Community downloads page and the teams. The other books bar the core rules, were mainly just in sets for the new teams and some extra missions, which aren't necessary starting out. The annuals contain all the team rules that were realeased throughout each year, but as you can expect, they are a bit out of date with balance changes. My hope is like the scout and blades of khaine rules which are free pdfs, GW puts the rest of the teams on there soon to help new players starting out. That way they stay up to date like the warcry ones. Hope that is of some help.

A little over a decade ago I dabbled in painting miniatures (not from Citadel) but never bothered to actually play any of the games. I'm getting back into the painting side of things, and Kill Team looks like a great gateway. I get a few different interesting models to paint, and if I do decide I want to play, I don't need to invest a massive amount of either time or money. Thank you for putting together these overviews, you're helping to fill a real gap in understanding the hobby as a whole. As someone coming into this knowing nothing about the game, GW does an awful AWFUL job of explaining things on their website.

How would you say the compendium lists are (balance wise) compared to the dedicated kill team lists?
@TheCommandPhase

I’d have to say the dedicated teams generally are better because of all the specialists they have. But some of the compendium teams are still decent and starting out you won’t see an immediate power level gap.
@Rikalonius
3 ай бұрын
I'm trying to figure this game out as I've been mulling around 40K rules for a while now but haven't purchased. Are the boxes the only units in that faction that you can use. It seems like in the past there were others. Does the Compendium have all data sheets for all factions currently usable in Kill Team? For instance, I want to use Battle Sisters and Arco Flagellants for my possible SoB Kill Team, rather than Novitiates. Is this possible?
@TheCommandPhase
3 ай бұрын
So the compendium does have options for more generic forces. In the example of the sisters you can have a force with sisters, repentia and arco flagellants. 2 fireteams of 5 so can choose 2 of the 3 types. The minor downside of these compared to the specialist units is you won’t have access to more abilities/options in comparison. But certainly not harm in playing them and learning the game using them. There is a certain Russian warhammer pedia website where you can find all the rules if you wanted to take a further look at each that I would recommend.
@Rikalonius

So if you head to the Warhammer community website, head to the downloads section and then kill team. You’ll find a balance dataslate there for the teams, alongside any FAQs and Errata for the core rules and crit ops to be up to date. You’ll be good to go from there with the two teams you have and the missions in your into the dark book 👍 Hope that helps, and if you need more missions they’ve been in white dwarf magazines else if you’re new there is the 2023 annual that should contain all of the missions on the gallowdark.

@Glyff3083
8 ай бұрын
@ Untrue. Blatantly. Clearly you've never played anything but the base rules. If GFF is bland, so is kill team. Because GFF's advanced rule book has THE EXACT SAME RULES as kill team, with OPR's mechanics substituted in. There's no real difference between the two. The list building is nearly the same, the hit/wound mechanics are nearly the same. The only difference is that OPR provides a stripped down single page ruleset for new players to try, and then makes everything else plugin that can be decided upon by the players for each game. Right down to command points, tactics, and objective cards. Don't like command points? Don't use them. Don't like having a bazillion gotcha mechanics with tactics cards? Don't use them. Don't like the hectic feel drawing random secondary objectives every turn gives the game? Don't use them. Way to show you've never actually played the game there chief. Grimdark future is pretty much identical to 40k, save you aren't forced to play with the mechanics that you dislike.
