I find that a small amount of meal prep helps, along with finding quick meals. Stir fry is a great one. Takes like 15 minutes at most depending on how much stuff you add/how much stuff you have to prep and has a lot of ingredients that can be used in other dishes. Same with curry (which can be eaten with a variety of things) and pasta, although they're not as quick. Even if you use two vegetables , you can get them to stretch across a good number of meals (a 50p head of broccoli goes a long way, and you can use the stem. Spinach, sweetcorn, peas are versatile as well). Also come up with a couple of go to breakfasts. I have greek yoghurt, scoop of protein and some cereal. Takes a minute and could be prepped in advance for the full week if I wanted.

Re budget-friendly food from a fellow student: frozen vegetables and fruits, oats/ rice/ beans etc in large bags, canned tuna and salmon, frozen lean meats. Stocking up on protein powders and supplements/ protein snacks during online sales with larger discounts. TK Maxx and other discount stores often have things like powdered peanut butter, almond or coconut flour at very affordable prices. Re time to cook food: have go-to general recipes, where you basically alternate protein sources, carbs sources and non starchy vegetables. Someone already mentioned stir fry, any pasta with protein and vegetables is great too, loaded egg hash with anything you have in the fridge, overnight oats. Meal prepping vegetables in the oven once a week and storing them in separate containers and using as desired later is my go to as well!

You don’t have to have three meals a day. That’s not a health guideline, its just a social norm. Having just two meals not only saves time and effort, but also allows for bigger, more satiating bowls. You should look at Dr Erik Berg’s and Dr Sten Ekberg’s videos on the powerful benefits of intermittent fasting. They are both brilliant doctors and enjoyable to learn from.

Weekends I do not count, but try to stay conscious about what I'm putting down; not just shoveling carbs in my face all weekend! I pretty much do this. I used to play American football so loved a dirty hard ass bulk. Now I've finished with that and started taking my diet seriously I've set a calorie range and hover around it, minimum protein goal and let fats and carbs battle it out. An interesting thought, though is just to stick with foods that maybe aren't appealing to you (controversial I know). As a Pharmacist I learned about the gut microbiome and how it changes, stimulating the enteric nervous system to eat foods that it likes. When you eat Salads and other healthy crap that's not as tasty as a burger your salad-loving gut flora take over and they become more and more appealing as they signal to the enteric nervous system. Now I can honestly say that I do actually look forward to Salads and healthy foods. Soz for the essay

Honestly, I've moved away from low calorie breads for the most part. They're usually extra thin or tiny and don't allow for much in terms of topping, and they def don't fill me up. I get more satiety out of a single 100 cal piece of whole wheat/cereal bread than I do 2-3 slices of 60 cal bread, so I just do open face sandwiches (with the 2nd side being lettuce if I need to) or budget it in to have 2 full slices (there are some cereal bread that are a bit thinner and lik e80 cals, too, which work better for sandwiches). I've started using those for french toast, too. The extra fiber is a game changer! With calorie tracking, I actually don't do too badly, and I've learned not to sweat it when I go above my daily intake - instead of writing the day off I just log things and move on to the next day. The hardest part is not reducing my calories too quickly when I start loosing weight. It's very tempting when you're going down half a pound/week to want to reduce just an extra 100 cals a day to go faster, but that usually leads to very poor adherence and I eventually fizzle out when I do. So now I'm at 2000 cals a day, try to hit 130 protein, and I think 60 or 70 fats, and I'll stay there until I'm no longer loosing at all.

Didn't put on much, got up to 155 but wasn't stoked on my physique so decided to get back to it. Down to 148 now, 40/40/20 is the macro split but sometimes the fat hits 30 just depends. Protein and calories are the 2 I focus on though, I get 160-190 g a day depending on. It's not too hard, gotta remember to drink water and other fluids to stave off hunger pangs.

I recently tried daily carb cycling for about a month and it was extremely difficult as a college student with no control over what is being served for each meal. Furthermore, I am a huge sweets guy and stay up late when I start to crave carbs so staying within my goals was getting super difficult. I am trying to quickly lose weight over the next month so I'm 5'7" 180 lbs and I am attempting to eat 1700 calories a day. According to an online calculator this should get me losing 1.5 lbs/week with 4-5 days of moderate exercise. Not saying I fully believe this, but it's a start. Instead of carb cycling now I am fully focusing on just staying in my calorie goal, and I am trying to do that by eating a large breakfast, medium lunch, smaller dinner (with plenty of carbs and protein since I work out in the evenings). I don't have access to a stove. Any advice on a high volume, cold breakfast around 500-600 calories? Also is this sort of eating pattern sustainable? Thanks!!

With regards to tracking chicken/meat, do we record the raw weight or cooked weight? I've always felt the cooked weight is the real weight of pure chicken and the raw weight is an inflated number due to water retention. The issue that lies there is that you can cook something just to the point of done, or alternatively crispy/burnt, and both methods will yield two different weights. So at what point is your weight of chicken a reliable number to ratio against protein content!?

If you’re looking to track as accurately as possibly, weigh your meat raw and use the raw value when entering it into your tracking app e.g. weigh your chicken breast raw, type “raw chicken breast” into myfitnesspal and enter the weight. Because based on the method of cooking, the cooked weight will always slightly differ.

My personal approach is somewhere between intuitive eating and calorie tracking. I have an awareness of how many calories and what serving sizes are of the things I eat. At the end of the day I usually have an idea, but not a spot on number of how much I ate, but I’ll know it’s somewhere between 2000-2400. Some would say that’s a big energy gap, but your energy output per days also fluctuates anyway so I don’t know how much more advantageous dialing that gap down would be for me. I think that’s an approach that works well for me BECAUSE I’ve put in time tracking calories. So I’m not suggesting or recommending anyone do this unless they’ve put in the time measuring/weighing/tracking Also some extra context I’m not a competitor and I’m currently maintaining. If I wanted to make a new specific fitness goal I think I would probably need to be more mindful and maybe break out an app and actually track a little bit.

I’d say after about 7 weeks of tracking, I have a pretty good rhythm down. Intuitively I resonate with what you said around not making it rigid with things that overall won’t have a major effect on my results, did this just feeling it out. The only issue I was having was with the amount of protein I was taking in - 16.3 bf% @176.3 lbs , I was aiming to get my lean mass of about 160lbs in 160g of protein. For about a week I was averaging about 190g of protein, but because extremely constipated. Even when eating daily fiber and micro %’s. I’ve lost some muscle for sure after about a week and a half of adjusting to my stomachs natural digestion process. Incorporated prune juice and less meat protein and protein shakes. Can’t say I’m out the woods yet, but to your point around flexibility, I found peace with the fact I am losing muscle gains, rather focusing on my overall health. Looking to redirect my focus to my protein intake in the next few days, so long as my body stay regulated. Side note for other viewers, I had to step back from even my current calorie goal of 1,800 and just only ate when I was hungry, which wasn’t often. Hope this helps someone ! Thanks Johnathan ✨❤️

I am a 5'1/155cm 105lbs/47kg female with a small appetite so I just make sure I am eating good amount of protein without really thinking about carbs and fats. I do not track calories. I intuitively eat until I am full. I just track protein and take some fish oil supplements every day for insurance on my fat intake. Thank you for this video. Really great advice

I'm also not fussed about carbs and fats unless it's specifically right before I'm working out. I'm glad I'm not the only one!

My experience with counting calories made reach a point where I was trying to track every meal and even when I was going out to eat I couldn't enjoy the food for the reason that I didn't know the calories. Now I have reached to the point where I found foods that I enjoy to eat and also know the calories and since I stopped tracking calories and I go out on weekends to enjoy a takeaway or a meal out without thinking about calories because I know until the weekend my nutrition was on point. So to sum it up what I am currently doing is that I still measure my portions unless I am not eating home of course and also look my self to the mirror and check if I am happy with what I see and if I am not I am making small adjustments to my nutrition. Lastly something that helped me a lot is that I do not weight myself everyday what I do instead is that I weight myself every 3-4 months for a week to find my weight average

Use heuristics instead of counting

What works pretty well for me is a range....so right now I'm trying to shed last bit of fat around my belly... so I'm in a deficit ...But even if I'm below my maintenance by 100 calories ...I will still burn some fat...yes it may take a little longer but who's in a big rush...this enables me to set a range between 2100 and 2300 calories since my maintenance is about 2400. I can squeeze in little cheat meals as a result of being in a Slight deficit as opposed to a large deficit where there is really no room for cheat meals

I’ve been trying to be more flexible and use acceptable ranges because when I’m too restrictive I’m more susceptible to overdoing it later on in the week. Thanks for the tips! I do love me a yummy sandwich 😋

I track all my calories and make sure I hit my protein goal first of all, the rest I don’t take too much notice of but always seem to be below my maintenance, is this the right thing to do? I am open to opinions as I’m not entirely sure.

For me, I usually track super strict for the first couple of weeks and then slowly slow down with it. Once I pretty much know what I’m taking in each day for my minimums I don’t really track much after that until I start on something new or some wildcard recipes.

I find that tracking calories isn't that bad when you're just making one meal but for two occasions. Making one big meal for example spaghetti Bolognese for about 4 days I find that alot more difficult to find the correct calories, I get confused and end up easily misleading myself. Also when your family/friends make a meal it's frustrating how you can't track the calories especially when you have done all day up to that point etc.

It's pretty easy if you track for the week instead of daily

I really hate when people say you can’t have a relationship with food. Sure, some people don’t have a relationship with food, but the moment you start becoming “mindful” with food, you have established a relationship

I’ve made a hobby out of tracking my Calories. See good results. But Im torn on eating low calories and doing minimal to zero cardio, OR adding more available calories and doing some cardio. If i can follow a low calorie diet, is cardio necessary?
@Nsham04

Cardio isn’t just for weight loss. I’m assuming you are trying to lose weight to be a healthier person. Cardio is like weight training for your heart and lungs. If you want strong, efficient, healthy lungs and heart, then cardio needs to be done. Don’t get caught being lazy and saying “if I eat low enough I don’t have to do that cardio.” Yes, you will still lose weight but you won’t be healthy. There are SO MANY forms of cardio and I would suggest trying different forms out to find what you enjoy. Some examples are playing a sport, running, walking, biking, dancing, and SO MANY MORE.

The calorie counting people crack me up. They are worried about something that doesn’t even exist, avoid all kinds of nutritious foods and then waste money on supplements with all kinds of chemicals in them

Wow that sucks. Good job on the weight loss. I was 240 last summer now im 197. I been doing 1600 the last 2 weeks just to see how it feels. B4 I was at 1800. But I've been lifting my whole life I'm 36 BTW. I'm pushing alittle hard cause I'm started to see abs underneath the fat. I get plenty of protein and I don't feel starved. Maybe plan some cheat meals. Focus on strengthening your will power . Or don't have enough of it laying around where you stuff your face that much.
