Well I already was planning to watch them , but this convinced me to give them more priority, legit all the "negatives" mentioned are things I like (except for the clumsier dialogue mentioned to occur at times).

You also should watch it anyway to better understand Type-Moon's Nasuverse lore in general (sicne "KnK is one of the pillars there), for example to take more enjoyment from the "Fate" series. Just to make sure to read 6 LN & Manga "Oblivion Recorder - Fairy Tale" since its absolutely different from the butchered mess that is 6 Movie "adaptation", and LN's+manga actually has proper amazing story, lore and more characterization.

I agree, and this is something I went back and forth on for this video in terms of whether or not to mention it. KnK is borderline required viewing for Nasuverse worldbuilding, but I also think that if you're somewhat aware of the Nasuverse, you don't need that much convincing. Compared to people who've only watched Demon Slayer, for example. I'll probably mention it in the full breakdown though, there's a lot I cut from this that will end up there. Including what you mentioned about movie 6.

@@ViviVariety Yeah, if going deep, for example KnK is crucial for understanding why Nasuverse is "Daoism" Metaverse, as many concepts in Naus writing didnt change even in different forms and settings. Its kinda required to understand his views on some things as a writer, which some of them didnt change to this days (even if KnK was written in very "unusual" time of Nasu life where he begun to seek the "alternative media" to all that was popular at that time in 90's, which actually including thanks to Anno and Evangelion of course w).

I would argue that the excessive dialouge and refrences to concepts are integral to the characters stories. for example, emptiness is explored through the whole series through Shiki, but its only through the 8th movie that we understand what it all meant. Without the concepts and subject matter of emptyness being brought up in a specifically conceptal way the 7th and 8th movies basically would loose a lot of their meaning. KnK is about the concepts and core of each character. For Shiki Emptyness, Murder, and Companionship. For Kokuto Normality, dedication, and understanding.

So I don’t disagree, I think most of the dialogue is very relevant to both the current story and the overarching themes of KnK. Most of my issues lie with how they’re integrated in the film, and to Ufo’s credit, it’s not exactly an easy process to adapt. Nasu has a very verbose prose that ALSO deals with really abstract concepts, and that’s not easy to include in a visual medium like films. Books and VNs are one thing, and that’s where most Nasu’s style really shines imo. For example, the KnK Light Novels are much more clear in what the story’s themes are and how a lot of the ideas and concepts relate to each character. Even as someone who read the novels after the series, I had zero issues understanding anything at all. As for the movies, the scenes where characters go really in depth on the themes and ideas tend to drag the pace down, and the films themselves are already slow to begin with, so it doesn’t make for a great viewing process at times. There’s examples in the films when it’s done well (KnK 1 for example) and examples where it’s a bit excessive (bits of 7 and 4). When it comes to films as visual mediums, I always think “Less is more” is a better approach with certain abstract themes and concepts, because it’s more effective to let the audience come to their own conclusions, rather than beat them over the head with it. Films like The Lighthouse or Blade Runner for example, are effective because they don’t have many long scenes where characters discuss philosophy; they let the films speak for themselves. Granted, I understand that with KnK there’s only so much that can be done. Again, I think most of the blame lies in how Nasu is a novel writer, not a screen writer, and his style doesn’t always translate to a visual medium at all. It also gets weirder with the KnK films because the scenes that ARE more important, like character inner monologues, got cut in the films, and those, in my opinion, are a much more effective way of conveying the story’s themes without going overboard. For example, a LOT of the novels have Shiki’s inner monologue where she ruminates on how empty she feels, or Mikiya being just a guy, and that’s more interesting than Touko explaining concepts to the audience. I hope that made sense! Lol I know that was long winded but long story short I agree with you, it’s more with the execution that KnK is a little clumsy, in my opinion.

If you don't mind how artsy and independent Kara no Kyoukai can be, go for it! If you want one person's opinion, I'd say KnK is at the very least on par with the Fate adaptations. Personally I'd say they're better than Fate/Zero, better than UBW, and...probably better than HF? I have many mixed feelings on Heaven's Feel lol. As far as the actual source material though, it's much more competitive! I'd say Fate/Stay Night > Mahayo > Tsukihime > Kara no Kyoukai.

Are there any differences from the anime, manga and LN?
@ViviVariety
2 жыл бұрын
A few, I actually just read the LNs in preparation for a much longer series review! The biggest change is that the characters are much more fleshed out. The novels give many characters their own chapters that add insight to their thoughts and feelings. The stronger characters like Shiki get way more introspection, and the weaker characters, like for example, Azaka and Mikiya, are way more interesting compared to their movie versions. This affects some movies worse than others, especially the slower, less plot driven ones. The actual plot of the LNs and the movies are the same, with the exception of Movie 6. KnK 6 had a ton of changes, like a watered down plot and some cuts that make the movie version feel like a filler movie. I haven't read the KnK manga, but I think it's ongoing and supposedly more true to the LN. As much as I'd recommend the KnK light novels, a proper English translation doesn't exist, which is quite a story in its own right. There's one version that's accurate but incomplete, and another full translation that adds a ton of embellishments. For most people, the movies are the best way to experience the series. But if you can read Japanese, or don't mind putting up with translation issues, the novels are awesome. You lose out on the atmosphere, but the characters are much richer. I know that was long but I hope that helps!

@ViviVariety

It's his first published work if I recall, and I generally consider it his first as well. Where it gets murky are with things like the alleged Mahoyo draft and Fate/Prototype. Mahoyo in particular feels like a blueprint for a ton of his later works. So the story goes, Mahoyo was his "first" story he wrote, but it was only ever a draft before becoming a full story later. That said, from my understanding, KnK was still his first actual published work, which is why I usually default to saying it's his first lol.
