I owned a 1956 Dodge Power Wagon. I really liked that vehicle. It had three levers on the floor; one for the selection of the gears forward and reverse, one for the range selection, high, low, low-low, and one for four wheel and two wheel drive. These levers allowed you choices according to the conditions in which the truck was made to work. It had a steel dash board, no padding here. It stood quite high off the ground. It had an in-line flathead 6 cylinder engine and an oil bath air cleaner. The only curved glass in the cab was at the rear corners to reduce the blind spots. Because the truck had virtually no creature comforts, save a heater, it was a real man's truck and required thought to use properly. That made it fun to use and the foibles made it endearing and memorable for me.

Cool Rig Brad! FYI...The device you removed from the rear of the roof rack is a exhaust fume/dust deflector for when the rear window is down, works quite well actually. Also locking hubs in the front would also help your gas mileage some what. Love those old jeeps!

If you want a classic, you need to have the skills, the time and the motivation to work on it. Too many people get one tear it down and give up. Otherwise you need plenty of spare money to throw at it. Pro tip: When rebuilding drum brakes, leave one side intact until you complete the 1st side. You WILL need the reference.

I was a Scout fanatic back in the 70's, 80's and 90's and miss everyone of them I had. Did some pretty wild things with suspension and drive line mods back then, most every thing had to be fabricated to work with a lot of trial and error involved. I guess I still love the classics as my 95 Tacoma which is my daily driver is now considered a classic as well. Enjoy your 74 Cherokee Brad it is a true classic. Great video!

I had a 72 Wagoneer with the engine out of a 74. I put a Howell Fuel Injection Conversion on it. Worth the costs. I would also recommend swapping out the wiring for a modern system. I did mine, but after the entire harness melted together and I needed to use speaker wires to rig up something to limp back home. All and all, I spent maybe 20k modernizing it, but making sure to keep the old look. In the end you have something reliable, fun to drive and does not go down in value. I sold it for a good profit a few years later. It was my biggest automotive related mistake.

Brad, when you do the a/c conversion, make sure to replace the compressor for one that is r134 compatible. The r12 compressor will leak r135 because of the size of the molecules being different. And also a proper orifice tube/expansion valve made for r134. The condenser should also be updated to a proper modern one instead of the old tube and fin. It will work far better for you especially in the heat that you see out there.

Good point. I purchased a rust free, mildly modified 74 Bronco back in 2010 for $15k. I owned it for 5 years and wheeled it in Colorado. Shocks, bumpers, convert 351W to EFI, axles, radiator, heater upgrades, steering upgrades..and on and on. I was able to do most of the upgrade within in a 2 month timespan so I enjoyed the upgrades for most of the 5 years I owned it. I don't regret a single penny I spent on it, I DO regret selling it.

Brad - I've been waiting a year for this great video. A couple comments, the chrome "spoiler" that you had on the back of the Cherokee above the rear window was actually used to help keep the dust/rain off of the rear window. Also - if you replace the headliner, I'd recommend white (light) vs black (dark) to help keep the heat down. I don't think the clocks ever worked on these vehicles (lol). I'm curious, have you weighed it yet? I'd be interesting in what the weights is (front vs back vs overall). I'd recommend replacing the drum breaks with disk as when they get wet, you'll be saying hi to any vehicle in front of you 😕. I also seem to remember a "fix" to make the fuel spout flush with the rear side panel (helps if/when you take it off-road). Thank you so much for sharing this experience with all of us. I can't wait to see more from this vehicle.

Hey Brad, I do know what you mean about the classics. I didn't have a Jeep, but I did have a 1977 Trans Am, just like Smokey and the Bandit. I let it go earlier this year after 15 years of owning it, but it has found a good home, as the Jeep Life has quickly taken over and I just didn't have as much time to drive the old car as I would have liked. In your case though, you can enjoy it, as you can take either the 392 out or the Cherokee out and do the same trails..... for that I am jealous. Enjoy!

My Dad bought an Orange with white top 72 GMC Jimmy (same as Chevy Blazer) brand new back in 1972 down at Lamb Chevrolet in Chula Vista.. We had bought a cabin up in Mount Laguna and he needed something to get down the mile long dirt road and snow.. He kept it completely stock (except for an Electronic Distributor) and in good shape until he passed away in 2001.. My brother and I swapped it back and forth between us for a few years after his passing.. I was able to take my kids up to the mountains and fishing in it, just as my dad had done with us.. I've got a great pict of me and my brother in front of it when we were about 8 and 9 years old back in about 1975.., and another picture of my two boys standing in front of it in 2010... great memories.. We finally decided to sell it to a guy who had seen it sitting in my driveway years before, and said if we EVER sell it, call him,, as it was his dream vehicle.. so if you see an Orange and white Stock 72 Jimmy cruising the hills of East County.. give a wave...

Brad, that tire-rub you talked about is not the deal breaker everyone seems to think it is. Assuming you mean the rub on the springs, etc at steering lock-to-lock. The Jeep's Dana 44 axle has "stops" on the knuckles to limit travel. You just need to turn those stops (bolts basically) out a little, until the tires stop rubbing at the extremes. Very easy. It only increases the truck's turning circle slightly and you probably won't even notice.

Thanks for sharing your classic Jeep Cherokee, Brad. The one classic I miss dearly is the 1963 Chevy Impala Convertible I found hidden under tarps in a barn in Coos Bay, Oregon. This is a bit over simplistic but somewhere along the line manufacturers moved away from emphasizing styling to emphasizing designing ...from aesthetics to function. Nothing wrong with that. I’ve wheeled a 79 Ramcharger for 15 yrs. I swapped a 360 magnum(small Hughes cam and Throley Tri-Y headers), NV4500, Dana300 and part time axles in over the course of the first 3 yrs. The original engine had been rebuilt and ran well but it’s valve seals leaked, smoking on start up. It still had full time 4x4 and a auto trans, got about 8-10 mpg. I also replaced the old 4” Rancho lift for a Skyjacker 6”. I run 35s with 4.56s but with the overdrive it’s getting about 12-13. That’s with Edelbrock 650 off road carb that I’ve never tuned. I’m debating aftermarket efi or saving for a 5.7 Hemi swap. I’ve had it off road from LaPaz to Moab. With overdrive you could go anywhere. By the way BJ’s off road is who you should talk to about any future lift questions. And put the spoiler back on if you want to drive with the back window down, it’ll keep the fumes out. Out of curiosity who did your engine and gages? I worked at JBA Speed Shop in Kearny Mesa until we moved to SC last year. I figure you had the spring shop in Escondido?

Loved you video on the 74 Cherokee. A few comments/questions. -The roof mounted rear wind deflector is very functional: The get the air flowing over and back, not swirling, reduces drag and helps with gas mileage. They also prevent wind from being sucked inside if you want to drive with the back window down. It also helps prevent the rear window from getting as dirty since the air flows over, not swirling. -Does the rear seat quick release for more cargo room or is is bolted down? -The dual exhaust were supposed to worth an extra 15-20hp. -Some say the Cherokee with the 401 could hit 100mph, have you tested that theory. 😉 Cheers, Rick

Good point about not having a classic project as your only vehicle. In addition, it's not really financially viable unless you are capable of doing a significant amount of the work yourself. I would repower to a slightly more modern EFI engine with trans options that have overdrive and a lockup converter, to improve economy. Ford 4.9/E4OD would be a good option. The problem with ~2008-newer vehicles are the electronics. CAN communication requires all the modules in the vehicle to be communicating properly or it just won't run.

To each of its own everyone have a different taste in what they drive and what they build for what they need it to do

Sounds like what happened with my '86 Grand Wagoneer, except it took about 5K of various upgrades and troubleshooting before having the engine rebuilt.

Hey Brad, Just a thought on that rear spoiler. I agree that it looks so much better with out it however, it is my experience that it actually disrupts the ari flow coming over the top and with out it, it turns the back window/tailgait into a big vacume and sucks road dust and exhaust fumes into the passenger are of the jeep. I hope I am wrong but something to be mindful of. Happy trails. David.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Living in SOCAL must be a blessing when owning classics :) PS I can smell and feel it....wow, miss the 80's when I owned these and many others.

Im contemplating sellin my newest vehicle, my 96 diesel. My Harley is the next newest, 92. Everything else are vintage 4x4s and a shovelhead chopper. I prefer a bit of extra effort on a daily to havin serious electrical failures that can shut my vehicle down indefinitely.

You "operate" an old vehicle & you "drive" a new vehicle. Go a tad older vehicle & it would be even more raw. Manual non syncro trans, manual choke, points, ect. With all of the CA smog restrictions,1975 & older is the only way to go. Looks like your having a good time. Enjoy🙂

I had a 1988 grand wagoneer full size jeep very similar this, I've always really liked the older 2 door cherokee models they are harder to find. My wagoneer was nearly perfect it was maroon with maroon interior and had the factory wood trim delete which is a nice little trim piece, it was nearly perfect with low miles. It was actually my first car and got me into jeeps it was stolen and I never saw it again i still have the original keys in my sock drawer lol. I'm hoping to one day get another full size jeep but now we are really into xj cherokees I have a maroon one the same color as my old wagoneer I've had for over 10 or so years now and we've had a bunch of other xj's I enjoy fixing them up.

Ahhhhh, the classics. If you have the time and money they are fun. A/C: I wonder if you can upgrade the compressor to use the newer gases. I don't think you can get R12 any more. If you can, replace the rear drum brakes with a caliper kit if you can find one. You know what would be a fun KZitem crossover event. Take your truck out to FabRats and have them upgrade the suspension. Not to go crazy, but just something so you can put on a little bit bigger tire. Oh, lastly, the steering wheel . In my '79 Ramcharger they used some cruddy universal joints and I had about 1/4 - 1/2 a-turn of play in the steering. It made for...interesting driving to say the least. I think Crutchfield had a replacement steering wheel shaft. fabrats could probably also build that up too. can't wait to see what you do.

Gen 5 Bronco tailgates work the same way I think. I kind of wish the new bronco at least had the roll down glass.

My old car also didn't have cup holder, however, a roll of duct tape on the floor console worked great.
