There are not many videos out there on BMWs like this one. I love BMWs but I'm very disappointed in their recent change to service manuals. They now only sell manuals to dealer franchises. You used to be able to purchase them as a service tech. Now you can't. My shop specializes in BMWs. The local dealer turns customers away. We get them, which is good, but we can't get data on new models. You are doing a great job. Keep it up. I liked and subscribed

Good job! Those are the 'ADVENTURE' rated fittings that BMW denied to provide you with as a factory standard. Nice of you to show them what it should have been. And NO, the reason they broke is NOT because of you, BMW should have made those in brass not in plastic. This is a poor reflection of their globally assumed quality standards. Don't get me wrong, the bike is fine and dandy, some things could've just have been a bit more 'engineering' friendly. The BREAK line uses Dot 4 brake fluid. At least on my K25 from 2006. Never had to replace the CLUTCH oil though. I asked my mechanic about the end drive oil change. He told me that they are maintenance free since they are sealed and as far as I understood it, shouldn't be tampered with and kept sealed. I've seen a lot of YT content creators service those (with molybdenum grease and nothing else), can you elaborate on what you did exactly, how it looked and what your thoughts are regarding servicing and re-lubricating that rear end drive shaft? After opening it up, was it necessary or was it something you probably should have not done assuming it had around 34000 miles? Last but not least, hopefully you still have some raw footage left of your work on this GS and it would really help the many tinkering enthusiasts who still own one of these. Notably how you rebuilt and re-engineered the fuel filter system, and how you managed to service the throttle body for example. Might be good food for a new video series on your favorite bike which would get plenty of views in the long run. I subscribed to your channel. Keep at it.
@AgatasKatkus
3 ай бұрын
I really love BMW's but it does suck to take apart some of the newer stuff as it wasn't built to last and its mainly because everything that was once metal has been replaced by plastic. As far as the final drive drive fluid, like many things BMW puts a lifetime stamp on it. Which is a broad term. After almost 20 years that fluid has probably degraded to some extent so I opted to change it. There are many good videos about servicing the final drive oil on YT. As far as the fuel filter add on, I will post a link in the description of a detailed forum post where I got my information from. Thanks for watching!

Great video. I ride an old GS from 1987 and can't believe how many bits and pieces your bike is made of. Please check the spider that holds the rear wheel, especially if it's still the alloy one. Here in Germany BMW had to call thousands of bikes back into the shops and replace the spider with one made of steel. If yours shows cracks replace it as well. And if not always use the torque wrench because too much Nm on the wheel bolts lets it crack. And then enjoy your new ride, mate!

Great job! You’re working on the totem of adv-bikes mind you. With a Little Bit of care on the plastics this bike will look like new! And maybe I would remove those foglights. Subscribed

I had the same, even same color. Bought it used for 2200, drove it from 60,000 to 100,000 km. Two things broke. One soldering point in the Ignition lock, and the starter got stuck on a trip in the Alps south Austria. I drove that thing home 18000km ( 1000mls) in one day without shutting the engine down , when refueling.Got there just in time, to see the Championsligue final at 8 pm. Average speed including refueling stops 160kmh or 100mph.

When you have the drive shaft out of a BMW motorcycle be sure to check that the u-joints are in phase (lined up). The rubber type cush that BMW uses in the drive shaft tends to deform and the u-joint get out of phase. When this happens, it put stress on the u-joints causing rapid wear. Bad things happen when the u-joint come apart. I have seen many failures of BMW drive shafts; the worst was that the output shaft on the transmission sheared off.

Yes sir! I checked it once I had it out and it felt like it was still in good shape. If it fails I’ve looked into some of the aftermarket options that are serviceable. Sheared output shaft is bonkers lol

Glad you came across it! I've worked on a lot of stuff (Bikes and Cars) and that knowledge transfers over to a lot of things. This is actually my first time ever touching one of these bikes!

Hi, nice vid! I hope and suppose that the front belt replacement procedure is doable without the dedicated tool.. I'm doin it in a couple of weeks. Cheers from Italy!

Thanks! I’ve seen people tap the holes on the pulley and put in a bolt which will retain the belt as you turn. Or you can get a universal stretch belt installation tool. I have several but I believe the one I used in the video was like $15.
