@@storybydanehav So I shoot with the Canon C500 MII and FS7 MII, the good thing about those is that they stay on for like 8hrs + on some gigs (clients freakout when they can't see the cameras so they stay on even through lunch breaks)...would you feel comfortable if your RED had to stay on for that long or do you worry about overheating?
@storybydanehav
2 ай бұрын
@@LonzosStudios i would feel comfortable using it from an overheating perspective, but I have two FS7’s that I prefer in that type of situation because it’s a better suited camera with better lens options for it. The big selling point of the Komodo is the RED Raw, so I wouldn’t use it for conferences or live gigs, even if it’s technically possible :)

This is interesting. I have found the Red Komodo to be a fantastic run and gun camera. Often I just stick on a lens, the batteries it comes with and an ND filter and rock it for hours and hours. I also use it for narrative work which it's been perfect for. The top screen isn't perfect but once you know it and can see the peaking you'll be fine. I work a full time job using the Red Komodo with no other accessories apart from batteries - They last about 90 mins each but I'm never recording that long, if I need more I use rods and stick something else on. All my latest short films have been shot on a Komodo not rigged out (For anyone wondering what you can do with very little equipment/accessories) Komodo has been my favorite low profile camera but yes lack of stabilization/AF is probably the biggest negatives.

Wow thank you for this comment! Everytime I've rigged it out like that I've thought "This would be awesome to use just like this..." followed by "But the screen..." so I never really tried it except on some travel occasions but then with the monitor mounted aswell. I'll give it a go and let you know what I think!

@@storybydanehav I'm absolutely a minimalist so this might be the problem. I'm lazy these days lugging gear around but I've found the Komodo stripped down is just so so perfect for any shooting scenario! For Narrative I use contax zeiss lenses and pull focus manually and for work I never take off the 18-35mm Sigma. Just purchased the x100 molus light as well so im excited to see how that fits!

@@ElliotSlade the cool thing is that I got really inspired by your comment. I want to go out and make a film shooting with it totally stripped down and then document the BTS process and how it feels. That's some nice gear you got there. I have to take another look at that light. Guess combined with a fast lens you can bounce it off anything in a relatively dark room to create beautiful scenes not needing much else. Thanks for bringing a different perspective!

I love traveling with my Komodo. I just stuck an old phone that I have in my cupboard for like 5 years on a cheap phone holder I got on amazon for 8$. Using RED control app on it. WIth a side rib(not the crazy priced red grip) and .71 adapter and Helios 44+ Sirui 1.24 anamorphic. Understanding the traffic lights then adjusting lighting or ND/ aperture keeps the R3D super lovelllllyyyyyyyyyyy

Yesss I feel you, I'm going to look at getting a phone holder for a monitor actually! Can you show me which one? I love that I can pretty much just look at the traffic lights and if they're not flashing - I'm good to go. Also ND on this camera is INCREDIBLE. The image is INSANE.@@anthonyrock5039

I never understood why everyone keep saying that using a Komodo takes more time for every shots? I own a FX6+FX3 and rented a Komodo for a music video, and it was as easy as using my Sony's...and I wasn't slower by any mean
@storybydanehav
3 ай бұрын
I think it's a general feeling. One thing that is objectively slower is the boot up time. If you see something happening that you want to capture and the camera is not in your hand ready to record yet, you will miss the shot. But once you're up and running it's just like working with any other camera I guess :)

Hey man, great review! I feel like I am similar to you in the way that I love to rig out my cam, I've got a blackmagic pocket 6k, and I totally get what you mean with "learning to expose correctly" so fun to learn to light, grade, and shoot with more of a cinema manual camera, even with corporate gigs! Hope to see more videos from you man, keep up the good work (only crisiscism is dude you need to get better at cable management haha, get some velcro zip ties and you'll be golden haha!)

Haha thank you! And yeeees I know I should just do it. I just find cable management so boring and unrewarding. And every time on every camera when I've done it properly it's time for that shot where I need to rip it all apart to stick it on a gimbal or a car hood haha.

What is your experience with the lens mount? Is there an issue with keeping lens or lens adapter attached? Red makes it very clear that the komodo improvement is mount lock. Is the camera noisy when on? Can post image stabilizers work to make smooth 4k footage from 6k easily or is a camera stabilizer needed? Is a lot of light needed in a dark night scene? Does the Komodo x come with a DC powercord? That is a selling point for the komodo 6k. Do you believe a blackmagic 6k could stand up to the komodo? Lots of questions but important ones. Thanks for your review.
@storybydanehav
7 ай бұрын
Wow those are a lot of questions, but as you say - important ones! 1. I think the lens mount feels solid. But i havent used any PL lenses on there yet. But I guess they have improved it on the KomodoX. There's always room for improvement :) 2. Camera makes some noise when powered up. Like booting a computer. But when running it's silent. 3. I wouldnt trust software stabilizers to do the job with any camera, no matter the resulution. The motion blur in the camera movements and perspective shifting will not look good for another couple of years, until AI understands what it is we want and just generate new pixels. If you want steady footage, use the right equipment for that :) 4. Dark scenes are complex. I would light it so you get the full color range of the sensor, which will look much brighter in camera than you want. But then you have the option to lower the ISO in post and make it darker. Just make sure shadows are controlled. 5. I don't know about the X, but the 6K does (I have the 6K) 6. I haven't tried the BM6K. It's a really good camera. Image wise it probably does for someone who are good at shooting. However BM RAW is still a very heavy and storage intense codec (as far as I've heard) which doesnt stand up to the RED RAW. Are you out shopping for cameras now? What do you shoot? I hope this helps!

How did you get the F1 button on the monitor to be your record button?
@storybydanehav

@ezhamid Do you have the same monitor? You can change the touch screen buttons on one of the pages in it. Like where you activate zebras, false color, histograms etc. The first four icons on the top left side are what sits on F1 F2 F3 F4. It took me a half day of reading the manual to figure that out :)

Hi Robin, How do you export Komodo footage for KZitem? I just rented one for few days and a I'm a bit confused on the codec+resolution. I shot some footage in super 35 | 6k but can't really export it to .mp4 from FCPX. I can export the video to .mov. Any tips. Cheers!!!
@storybydanehav
8 ай бұрын
I'm not a FCPX user at all, I switched my whole workflow from Premiere to Resolve right about when I got my Komodo, mainly for the integrated raw handling and color workflow. But from what I know .mov and .mp4 are just different containers, not codecs - so they can contain video of any codec such as H264, H265 etc, so it shouldnt really matter which format you export. Since FCP is an apple product there's no suprise they want you to export to their Quicktime container I guess. Here's a video I found for FCPX workflow with the RED Komodo: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mW943XqeqouIY5w Good luck my friend!

@@storybydanehav I'm no cinematographer but people do seem to prefer brighter and sharper videos for the in-the-studio talking shots.
