This is the first time I've seen this fault, clearly explained. Well done.

since cam phases have been introduced I have changed many BMW's , smaller engined Volvo's and Renaults. I cannot recall changing one on a Toyota and maybe one or two on a Honda. I have disassembled Hondas and got them working because of missed oil changes gumming them up. Perhaps BMW/ McLaren etc should look at Toyota's method of doing things.....

Thanks for explaining that! Almost every make and new engine uses those today and i always wondered what wore out.

This may seem insane, But I know other vehicles have similar issues with cam phasers. One that stands out in my mind is the 5.4 ford triton v8. A solution they have come up with is using machined pieces to lock the phaser in place permanently. It doesn't hurt performance on that engine, but it's also not a twin turbo supercar engine.

Great video. I can’t imagine the amount of time it took to figure it out. Well done!

Excellent video!!! I have more experience with Ford cam phaser issues and cannot stress enough the importance of proper oil changes on any vehicle with cam phasers/variable camshaft timing. Do you know of anyone "locking the camshafts" on a M838T or a M840T for very high HP applications?

What can be done to prevent that? Millon dollar question

Apparently the Audi Group did some reinforcement around the pins to reduce wearing on the V10 R8 cam phasers

what a great detailed video. I now know how these things work :) on a serious note what caused that wear? debris? dirty fluid causing the locking pin to stick? soft metal? It looks like it got worse over time until the lock became a ramp.

So how does one stop this from happening? Is there a more robust Cam Phase that is available that won't wear down as much?

Just like cam phasers on the Ford 5.4 liter 3 valve engine. They make noise when bad

How many miles on average for this failure... if there is one! Hard to believe McLaren owners are skipping oil changes ;-)

Thanks for the explanation. What is the typical cost to replace these?
