Hit the fan kit isn’t necessarily end of days worst case scenario. As a Hurricane Katrina survivor, let me tell you SHTF can be a couple weeks and be as simple as defending the neighborhood, not hiking and marching through the wilderness. Most people have super unrealistic Hollywood notions

A lot of good advice - iron sights should be trained with, and you should consider ubiquitous calibers and platforms. However, "one night of operating" is not going to turn your weapon light useless.

I would echo what you said about going with an LPVO with an etched reticle - it will still be useful without the illumination in many scenarios. In fact, I rarely use mine illuminated regardless of time of day/night. Just get one with clear glass.

A 5.56/.223 chambered AR pattern rifle. Light. Optic...a real tough one. LPVO is great. An ACOG is good too. You can't kill an Eotech. At least not easily. The old ones use 2AA batteries. If the world runs out of those, we're already dead. DD Quad rail. Giselle if you're fancy. Something that you can throw off a 2nd story building that will survive. Good irons. Not those plastic Magpul flip ups. Spend another $70. It's worth it not to die. Nothing proprietary. A detachable bipod would be nice. 14.5" barrel w/ a 1/7 twist. A stock that stores Skittles. A grip that isn't a sh*tty A2 grip unless your hands are deformed. As many mags and as much ammo as you can pack. Done. You're gonna be pillaging your enemy or your friends when things break. Might want to have the most common, interchangable rifle you can. After that, get a 12ga pump shotgun. Mossberg 500 series or Remington 870. If it breaks, your 12 year old can cut new parts out of sheet metal. Next is a handgun. 9mm. Reliable. At least 3 magazines. Forget your stupid red dot pistol sight. I'm not as worried about not finding batteries as I am not finding ammunition.

About this subject... Well, there's one thing I do know for sure... I own Maverick 88 that lives in my truck for about 23 years now... It has been shooting from sparrows to snakes, foxes to hogs and a lot of stuff in between, with boring reliability. It doesn't know what optics are, it has tasted all kind of ammo from a multitude of manufacturers I do think it forgot what bore cleaner tastes like, though😊😊😊 Time for disasemble, clean and reassemble... Thank you so much for sharing these wise words! 👍👍👍

Good points, I think this debate online rarely ever covers the option of caring a very light weight meat gun as well. A small daily meat gun like a 22 or light weight break action shotgun are what you would use most often. We have all been skunked while deer hunting before. But few of us have been skunked while squirrel hunting. Give yourself stopping power and defense capabilities of an AR platform rifle if you are going for bigger game and keep a light weight gun attached to your pack until it's needed.

Over here in Australia 303 bolt action Enfield are still pretty common also quite a few carbine versions in 7.6x39 which would probably be my choice. I used a copy of a no5 Enfield carbine in 7.62x39 shooting camels , wild dog's and other pests in northern Australia for years . With a low power scope alongside iron sights and its ability to use ak magazines it was quite a handy gun for a bolt action.

Definitely agree on iron sights I can’t tell you how man guys I know who only relay on optics. Optics are great but if they don’t work what good are they? Personally I like a etched reticle if the batteries die I still have a reticle. If we’re talking strictly grab it and go type rifle I’d go with an Ak simple to operate very reliable.

Post SHTF, just how many gunfights do most people think they will be in, let alone survive. Let’s be real here, the best way to survive a gunfight is not to be in one. Be sneaky, quiet and fast. But if that doesn’t work you need to unleash the devil himself to come out on top, or clear your escape path in order to live another day! 😈😈😈

So you’re basically saying to keep it simple, reliable and sustainable. It might be fun to slap every gadget you can onto your primary weapon, but maybe not practical. I’ve never been a fan of what I call over accessorizing. I prefer less weight. My 5.56 Colt AR-15 is fitted with an ACOG and has the irons for backup. That’s it. My AK and Bullpup both got SFP LPVO’s. 1-8x28. Those have permanent reticles that can be enhanced in poor lighting with lit reticles, but being lit is not a requirement - just a convenience. Both of those rifles still have their irons as well. I’ve moved away from optics that require batteries, (I have a drawer full of them), and the calibers I use are the most common. Just seems like common sense.

🙏🏻that’s more or less where I’ve migrated to over the years as well. Although I have been curious to test the ‘52,000’ hour claim by red dot makers by carrying a dot around in my pocket everyday until it dies. Just to see if they’re even feasibly close to lasting that long - as presumably one would have their SHTF rifle on them at all times during any good apocalypse.

No one saying you dont need iron sights. But why restrict yourself? You can have both. Target focus vs front sight focus is huge to me. Also at night you see shadows. Point gun at it and focus on front sight, shadow disappears. Red dot would help
