Students often aspire to be like their teachers, and at the same time, you may have found it challenging to do everything in just the way your teacher did. In this video we discuss why that is not only often the case, but actually always the case.
And that is because Tai Chi is an art about awareness and intention. And do two people ever have the same awareness? When two people taste wine, or a meal, or see a sunrise, they do so in their own unique way, don't they? And when you intend to do something, your intention is unique, the result of the sum of your awareness and experience. When two people describe how to tie their shoelace, they will have different instructions, but they are both okay, aren't they?
In Chinese martial arts, Tai Chi, there is a tendency to become dogmatic and rigid. But in the Tao, the words are not the Tao, the fingers that point to the Tai are not the Tao. In something like NBA basketball or tennis where people train so hard and compete so seriously, you still see that everyone dribbles the basketball and hits the tennis ball in different ways.
So consider for what purpose you practice Tai Chi diligently, while noticing the ways that your unique awareness and intention can help you reach that purpose. Hold on to these qualities as you go beyond the limitations of words and teachings. And when you reach closer to that Tao, how much more fully will you appreciate your unique qualities?
The experience and methods of prior masters, whether it's Tai Chi, basketball, or tennis, helps to guide us on this journey. As I teach, I draw from among them to give you a variety of different frameworks of awareness and intention, because some of them will be closer to your natural way, and will help you to find your own path more quickly, and more comfortably. And that is the path you would rather take, isn't it?
