It's real simple. I've seen thousands of concerts by hundreds of bands and the one thing I can consistently say about these guys that I cant say about anyone else is that EVERYONE there ALWAYS has a smile on their face. It's a powerful feeling that has never let anyone down that I've introduced them to. If you haven't seen them, GO. DO NOT HESITATE!

Agreed. I had the pleasure of seeing them for the first time last Friday in Boston. They were amazing. My only complaint is that that they didn't cover this song :) I totally get what you mean though... I spent half the time dancing, having a good time and the other half walking around observing people dancing their asses off, having the time of their lives. Great experience.

The difference between the dead and panic is that panic has, gratuitously, taken the road map that the dead created and refined, contorted and put their touch on a genre that can't be judged by anything except fiercely loyal fans coming back year after year. If you think you can judge the difference between the dead and panic that shows that you just don't get it. Cheers.

The difference between the Grateful Dead and Panic is that the Grateful Dead were much better musicians. There is virtually no communication between these guys in this tune, no ebb or flow, no tension, no release, they didn't even have the respect to bother to learn the ending. Thank god for Phish. WSP just seems like a scam.

shrams23 WSP gets it. If you don't like it then fine. But they get it. I'm a 250+ GD fan and I've seen Panic light it up and I've seen them jack it up. Just like the Dead. Panic playing Fire is just Cool! Even if they don't get it right.

Star Power Weird I saw this so soon after you posted. Guitar, Banjo and bass. Been messing around with Mandolin. Please don't try to pull me into a discussion about Widespread Panic being better than the Grateful Dead. It's just an idiotic premise. The extra lyrics are a rap the Micky Hart wrote that appear on an album he released in the 70'S WSP doesn't even play the end of the song here.

And Panic does most of they verses when the Dead skip them...when he goes "Fireman, fireman call off your dogs" etc. there is another verse called the JB Raap that I never heard.. Written at Mickey Hart's ranch in heated inspiration as the surrounding hills blazed and the fire approached the recording studio where we were working; verses three and four don't appear on the Grateful Dead recording of this song, but lines five and six of verse three became one of our mottoes, along with "Record More than You Erase.") I had to include the note from Hunter due to its extreme coolness. Widespread performs the Grateful Dead version of the song, but parts of verse four show up in JB's "Fire Rap", as Will and Ted call it, which usually appears before verse 3 and is transcribed as follows: JB's Fire On The Mountain Rap: Blind man, blind man call off your dog He lifted his leg on the fire and he's hogging the log Fire on the mountain, her she comes, her comes comes All the way back around Out of the frying pan and into the fire Over the rabbit trap and into the briar Fire on the mountain, it's coming around It never comes up and you never come down

yo peeps. not the hugest WP fan in the world, but definitely a big-supporter. Love seeing them when I can. Question, though... does JB play meaningful guitar? First and foremost, I mean zero disrespect. It's just that--honest to god--every time i try to hear him I never can. Only ever hear Jimmy's lead and the keys. Maybe it's bad timing... Thanks! EDIT: Heard his guitar towards the end, but the question still stands. Maybe point me to a song he plays more? thanks, all.

Fire On The Mountain Lyrics: Robert Hunter Music: Mickey Hart Robert Hunter says this in "Box Of Rain" about writing this song: Written at Mickey Hart's ranch in heated inspiration as the surrounding hills blazed and the fire approached the recording studio where we were working; verses three and four don't appear on the Grateful Dead recording of this song, but lines five and six of verse three became one of our mottoes, along with "Record More than You Erase." This is the full version of the lyrics. Once the song had become established the Grateful Dead performed the first two and the last verse. But in 1977 performances, they just played the first and last verses. And in a studio outtake from 1977, when the song was being developed, they included some lines from the other verses as well as other lyrics. Long distance runner, what you standing there for? (note 1) Get up, get off, get out of the door (note 2) You're playing cold music on the bar room floor Drowned in your laughter and dead to the core There's a dragon with matches that's loose on the town Take a whole pail of water just to cool him down Chorus Fire, fire on the mountain Fire, fire on the mountain Fire, fire on the mountain Fire, fire on the mountain Almost ablaze, still you don't feel the heat (note 3) It takes all you got just to stay on the beat You say it's a living, we all gotta eat But you're here alone, there's no one to compete If mercy's in business, I wish it for you More than just ashes when your dreams come true [chorus] Baby's in scarlet, her shackles in gray If loves to love she's got it salted away Out of the rat trap and under the wire Out of the frying pan and into the fire Put it down heavy, strip it down lean Got to lay it down dirty and play it back clean [chorus] Fireman, fireman, call off your dog This isn't a blaze, it's just a hog in the log Cut up in sections, squirming alive Lost to the world on that fifty-cent jive There's a fire on the mountain, running around What doesn't go up can never come down [chorus] Long distance runner, what you holding out for (note 4) Caught in slow motion in a dash to the door The flame from your stage has now spread to the floor You gave all you had, why you want to give more? (note 5) The more that you give, the more it will take To the thin line beyond which you really can't fake

You may know the feeling....all pumped for the show and about halfway through the first set it gets reallll foggy??? The 'music' still transcends me to a natural high....I couldn't imagine not being able to handle a show just because I'm sober (like a lot of peeps I know have to do)...and for that I'm grateful...Cheers-Matt W.
