Perfect tempo, as well. I was so taken in by the perfection of all of this, that I forgot to mention that the tempo was spot on. Perfect performance!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This wonderful Toccata, beautifully played - takes me back to one of my organist friends (I was a choirboy then) playing this piece on the organ of the Central Hall, Westminster. That was in 1950 or so. His name Fred Goeghegan. Organist of All Souls, Langham Place, London. I'm now 85

I love the tempo here. So many are playing it literally as fast as they can, taking away the majestic sound. I listen to this often in the mornings, great way to start the day.

I like it a tiny bit faster. But not too much, because the majesty then is lost. But this is definitely one of the best versions available on the internet.

I have sat pretty much under the organ as this was being played and those bass notes just hit you right in the chest. This is just such a beautiful and exciting piece of music that brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it and stirs me beyond reckoning. Time to explore more of Widor's catalogue I think.

I grew up listening to the Virgil Fox ‘Encores’ recording of this beautiful piece which is played at a fairly fast gallop. Watching this gentleman play the piece I now realize I was missing most of what the right hand is playing because of the pace taken. Don’t get me wrong I still love the Virgil Fox recording but I’m hearing more of what I’m supposed to hear when it’s played at a slightly slower speed. This performance is beautiful.

I finally picked up a copy of the entire 5th Symphony recently. Much of the 'organistic' tome is quite contemplative and pensive in nature. You allow the subtlties of composition, sounds, and colors seep into that quiescent part of your soul up through the end of the fourth movement and then, WHAM, you`re plastered by a grand display of forte arpeggios. It is utter genius, I say! And I agree, the tempo should be such that the individual notes must be heard, as in this rendition, or they get muddled together in the cavernous space an organ requires and you lose the intended effect. Let the music speak , as you see here, and leave the bravado at home.

I have seen this played at a local concert and felt the reverberations under my feet. It is in F major and has great extremes of pitch (bottom Bb to top F),, something that fills me with wonder. My Uncle Bob can play the organ and has played this piece more than once. Incredible swell of the instrument - love the soaring top F in the climax! Wow!

This organ is so different from that which I played several years ago. It's a rebuild of the top rank. Great work. The Widor Fifth Symphony, of which this is the last movement, could be considered one to display the player's virtuosity if taken at a fast pace. However, a slower tempo, such as that by the composer's own playing of his work, allows the wonder of the piece to become much more obvious as the ear does not simply pick up a jumbled mess. The virtuosity shows through because the listener can discern ALL the notes. It's possible that Mr. Purvis has studied Marie-Claire Alain's interpretation which seems to also have been picked up by the organist in this very agreeable performance, Siegfried Franke. Pity about the slight blemishes in the last few bars of this performance.

Entirely agree about the tempo! I hate the muddy mess that some players make by showing off with a faster tempo! in any case, if you play this on the Cavaillé-Col in Saint-Sulpice (Paris), you HAVE to play it slower, partly to allow the pipes to "speak" and partly because of the enormous echo!

Star500e is perfectlt correct.Far too many organists play this piece much too quickly thereby losing the clarity of the music without which the piece is a nonsense. The intention of the composer must not be sbjugated to the desire of the performer to "show off" This organist is magnificent.

And you've written better... When an artist produces a work that appeals to such a broad audience, follows its artistic theme and is clearly 'complete', I would suggest that this is THE definition of a 'great' work.
