When the first time I was watching Stand by me I think it was when I was around 4 or 5 years old and this movie really touched me so much especially friendship between River Phoenix and Will Wheaton. This movie is and always will be the best movie about friends and exception that I have ever seen and back then and now I still admire their friendship. And I thought that the first time I saw Will on the show The big bang theory but now I know that it was Stand by me and when I saw him back then I just fall in love not just in his play but and him( and River too .RIP) as well. And I always after watching STAND BY ME looking for friendship exactly like that.

I saw the movie in theaters in the summer of 1986 and thought I knew about just every other teen or preteen actor. But not this one. Only John Cusack and Corey Feldman. Cusack was already somewhat established as a star with Sixteen Candles, The Sure Thing, and Better off Dead. Corey Feldman was already a familiar face with that McDonald’s Santa Claus commercial, Gremlins, and The Goonies. Everybody else including Kiefer Sutherland were unknowns.

@HW Plainview This is exactly how I felt after seeing SBM. I was 13 when I saw it the first time, and it was summer of 1993...I remember it like it was yesterday. While watching it, I immidiately connected with Chris Chambers character, and at the end of the movie I remember how sad and crushed I was, just because how his story ended...and his last scene when he is walking of and easy fading away. It was a couple of years later I realised I was watching that movie 2-3 months before River Phoenix passed. I 'll never forget that day and how 13 years old me felt after seeing the movie. Life really imitated art in a creepy way.

Corey Feldman has been very outspoken in recent years on the abuse children are exposed to in Hollywood. Corey Haim went through it and dealt with the pain by taking drugs and he died as a result. I've suspected River encountered the same fate. You can never trust your children with other adults. Never.

In the mentioned cults, River was sexually abused by adults many times over before he was even a tween. I suspect that was the basis of his drug use which eventually killed him. Very sad as he was one of the greatest actors of his generation, he also turned out to be it’s version of James Dean.

Been a huge fan of Stand By Me since seeing it in 1993. Sometimes I think something a bit odd going on. River Phoenix was a good actor but sometimes I think he plays Chris too well. Like at times he really is Chris. Wil Wheaton saying it was like River was a different person. Just strikes me as odd.

@emilie11291
4 жыл бұрын
It's actually a very common technique in acting to draw up emotion from past personal experiences. I doubt the director knew about River's past abuse when he gave him that direction. For most kids, that direction means something like "Remember when x person made fun of you" or "Remeber when your brother broke your favorite toy". Unfortunately, River was someone who grew up too fast because in part because of the experiences mentioned above. He himself said in an interview that The Children of God (the name of the cult) "were ruining people's lives" and that he "lost his virginity" at around 4 years of age, so of course this kind of direction is probably going to draw up darker memories in him than in your average kid. RIP River.
