Having grown up in Springfield, I've often passed a plaque on the town square that commemorates this famous Hickok/Tutt shootout. The history museum includes an 'immersive re-inactive chamber', which allows one to 'experience' this event. There are several more markers around town having to do with Hickok, such as one by the courthouse and various others showing where testimonies from witnesses were taken. As one description included on a tour of the various sites says, 'Nothing better describes the times than the fact that dangling a watch held as security for a poker-debt was widely regarded as a justifiable provocation for resorting to firearms.'
@christineparis5607

I would love to see Springfield, I have gone to many old west locations, and they always seem to retain a feel of the history they witnessed, even in modern times. When I lived in Los Angeles I used to go to a restuarant on Gower and Hollywood blvd. Gower used to be an alleyway next to a studio. "Gower Gulch" was where lots of real cowboys hung out to get extra parts in westerns in the early 1900s. There are some great photos of these guys waiting around...
@curiousworld7912

@@christineparis5607 If you ever do make it here, be sure to check out the history museum on the town square. It's strange now to think of Missouri having once been considered 'the West', as it's now in the center of the country, but back in the 19th century, this was the jumping-off point for wagon trains and gunslingers. :)

@@kohrakthehorriblebionicle6187 What makes you think that you need an external opinion to receive "balanced" information? Anyone, regardless of stature, location, education, etc, has bias they apply, consciously or not. Acknowledgment of this is the thing that is needed to have that honest dialogue with anyone. I've seen many historians discuss any number of things, and they'll all tell you things like "this is the best info we have" or "this is what was said at the time" or "back then things were typically reported or done in *this* fashion" etc. Context is critical. You don't need a foreign opinion to get accurate historical context or information. All you need is someone that is at least intellectually honest and will be open about their opinions and understanding of things so that YOU can understand how they arrived at any particular conclusion. History is easy to screw up, especially history of mythical or "legendary" figures. So much anecdote, hyperbole, re-telling and other pollution of actual fact makes it difficult and sometimes IMPOSSIBLE to know what really happened. Bill Hickok has been lionized so much, I doubt he'd recognize his own story.

Custer was only a General during the Civil War. After the war his volunteer unit was disbanded, and he took his regular Army rank of Captain. When he died he had reached the rank of Lt. Colonel.

I have stood on the very Spot as Wold Bill when he took that shot. There is a Bronze plaque in the Sidewalk in Old Town Springfield marking that spot.
