And as for the acorn patte's you made... Brilliant mate, i've never seen that done before but would love to try it some time. Thank you for showing us the process : ) And foraging the rest of your dinner! Fair play to you buddy, Also the basket!... mate, thats some skill you have there, amazing!! I'd love to learn that too, i know that would deffo get my girls more interested in camping out bushcraft style (Their 6 and 8 ) I can honestly say thats the best hunting/bushcraft vid i've watched in a long long time mate : ) Keep em coming Andy. Thanks Jay, your very kind brotha. Defantly! You should try the patties. We've had a fairly mild autumn this year, you've probably got another week or two to collect up some acorns before their spoiled or munched by the Squirrel's & Wood Pigeons. Just pop them in the freezer, shells n all & use them as you need. I'll cook up some acorn bread next time I'm out. delicious mate, especially while it's still warm. Yes, bet your two girls would love the basket weaving. My 6 year old daughter loves all this stuff, especially fishin. She's more of a boy than my two boys lolhaha. My eldest daughter, not to so, but not many 17 year old's wana spend their weekends campin with Dad. Only like my 8th-9th basket, but their still holdin up :) This type of weave is my favorite, just because it's so easy. I'm on my phone so I can't add the link, but check out this vid... Quick & easy bramble basket by channel called.. PacoWarabi. Much more detailed than what I shown. Great little video. Cheers & take care buddy Andy

I can only echo what others have already said, an excellent video of an excellent outing. The range of skills mixed with the wonderful camp (that fireplace is just outstanding) is the stuff of childhood dreams spawned by reading tales of the frontier. Cheers buddy. Yes, the fire place has lasted me years, but the fire pit is starting to burn under the base rocks, so I'm guna have to dismantle and rebuild it soon. I don't want it to fall in on itself, plus when I rebuild it, I'll add some type of grill aswel. Defantly! Campin out as a child and all them books and films on going into the wild always fascinated me. Still does. Thanks pal. There's no rush to get them processed. I normally bag up the hide after skinning, then pin n salt it at home. I once forgot to do this and left a few hides festering in my rucksack for three weeks. because they were sealed in a baggie, they were fine. Once the hides are dried out, again... There's no rush to tan them. They won't rot or oat once there dried out. Cheers Andy

Really inspiring vids Andy….Hope you keep them coming. A PCP or Co2 rifle would be such an investment for you when it comes to your hunting footage as theres no where near as much recoil for the slow mo shots. Not a critisism of course. Your vids cover all my interests (inc. WD too ) and its rare to find bushcraft vids that cover the air rifle/hunting aspect too so i hope you continue with that. Kind regards, Darren
@ClanGunnBushcraft

Cheers Darren, your very kind brotha. I'll keep on at them... Back out for a few nights at the weekend, I'm just recording the hunt rather than the camp side of the trip tho. That's great, do you get out much yourself? I agree with ya on the PCP's... No recoil, better accuracy and footage - which gives a further range and better viewing, but I'm just a bit oldskool mate lolhaha. I love my springers!! I shot a pcp for the first time a few weeks back. Lovely, but kinda missed the recoil. Plus, a hunt wouldn't be the same unless I got punched in the face by my scope cam mount every time I took a shot. I take it as karma for hunting cute fury woodland critters :) Cheers Darren atb Andy

these are some of the best camping/hunting videos I've seen. also I tend to agree on the pcp rifle suggestions. have you seen the benjamin marauder woods walker? it basically looks like a crosman 1322 with the carbine stock. they are small and quiet. just a suggestion because I noticed in alot of your videos you seem to be struggling with your pack and rifle. Either way awesome videos can't wait for a new one keep it up man you are good at what you do.
@ClanGunnBushcraft
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeffrey, your very kind buddy. I do struggle very much with the weight. The packs not a problem, but with the weight of the camera & mount, I can't shoulder my rifle steady unless I'm supported. If you watch my first hunting only video... My second shot, even though I get a head shot, I'm all over the place, arms like jelly :) Iv seen a squirrel hunt video on the fieldsports channel early this year with the Marauder. Awesome rifle and perfect for woodland stalkin. I do also like the Air Arms S410 tdr. Iv been pesting at a friends farm this week, if it starts to be a regular thing again? I'll be sure to get a pcp, there perfect for that, but in-practical for what I'm doing nowadays. Most of what I practace is for self sufficiency and I need a rifle that's as self sufficient as I can and springers win in that category. Sure, PCP's win about every other I know haha. I only make short 2-3 day camp - hunt vids, but I'm normally out there for 4 nights / 5 days and a pcp wouldn't get me past target practace. Cheers Jeffrey, have a happy crimbo buddy. Andy

What is the solution you put the egg yolk into before applying to the squirrel pelts? I am very familiar with brain tanning, but I have not seen this method using the eggs. Thanks for taking the time to put up the vids! Keep up the good work.
@ClanGunnBushcraft
8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Mays Sr Thanks Michael, appreciate it bro. The solution is the tannic acid (tannin) that I leached out of the acorns earlier in the vid. You've gota remove the acid from the acorns to make them edible, and it's that first boil that produces the most concentrated acid solution. It's only a mild acid, so it doesn't burn ya, but wash your hands good after. Don't get it in your eyes, and as little as you can on the fur side of your pelt. It'll make the fur fall out. The term "tannin a hide or tan a hide" comes from this method of using tannin to tan the hide. Some people call it vegetable tanning. There's a few species of tree bark and plants that produces tannic acid, but acorns are just easy. Just add egg yolks or the brain, mix it up good and it'll make your pelts alot softer than just brain or yolks tannin alone. I don't do it in this vid, but ya meant to soak the hide in water for 24 hours before. Makes it absorb better. I forgot 😀 Cheers bro Andy

Thanks Daz. Yeah, the tannic acid has loads of uses. Other than like I show in the vid where I add the two egg yolks and tan my hides with it. It can be used to treat burns, reduce blood pressure, sore throats, diarrhea, ingrown toenails, helps clot blood and mixed with charcoal it can treat poisonings. Just incase you munch the wrong mushroom etc. I'm sure there's probably many other used too. Cheers bud Andy

So to process a hide first you put salt on it for 24hrs and then let say you brush it with the yellow part of an egg and then....? Thanks for sharing and great videos ;)
@ClanGunnBushcraft
7 жыл бұрын
No, I probably don't show the process to clearly. It wasn't meant to be a tutorial, just showing what I was getting up to. I add the salt because I'm out in the woods and it keeps the flys off the hide. It does dry the hide a bit quicker, but you have to was the salt off before tanning the hide. If you notice a little earlier in the video, I leach (boil) the tannic acid out of the acorns before I eat them. This yellow tannic acid is what I tan the hides with. I added the yoke part of the egg to the tannic acid then cover the skin side of the hides with the mixture. Try not to get any on the fur side as it'll make the fur fall out. If you don't have any eggs? You can use the brain of the critter. Every animal has a big enough brain to tan it's own hide. Leave that to dry and the hides will become alot softer and can be used to make pouches etc. Cheers and thanks for watching

hi what is acorn meat or is it boiled acorns cheers
@ClanGunnBushcraft
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's acorn meat that's had the tannic acid leached (removed) out of it. Your stomach can't digest tannic acid. By removing it, they taste like mild peanuts. Nice when cooked with fruit of chocolate. You can leach it out like I do in the video... boil it up, remove the water, re-fill and boil and repeat the process anothet 3-4 times, or wrap the meat in cloth and put it in a stream/ river for a day or two. Depends on the speed of the water. It's a great wild edible, nutritious and there ripe for collecting now. Try them buddy. Cheers, Andy

Yes, he's one of my favorite poets. Another one of his that I love... I have been a seeker and still am, but I stopped asking the books and the stars. I started listening to the teaching of my soul ~Rumi~ Thanks Andy

Nice video what was the mixture that you used to tan the hides? thanks

Thanks Sara. The solution was the tannic acid that I leeched outa the acorns on the first boil. Plus two egg yolks. It's a mild acid, but try not to get too much on the fur side of the hide. It can make the hair fall out. Cheers Andy

+sara sammon The Yew tree's amazing isn't it. There's a fair few in the area, but nothing like this one. Yews can live for thousands of years, but I think this one's about 5-600. When you've dried the hide & rubbed in the tanning solution, you'll have to leave them to dry out again. I only got back from this camp a few days ago, so these ones in the vid are still drying out. Normally takes about 6-7 days. Then scrunch them up & your good to go :) I'm using the four Rabbit hides to make a crossbow quiver & two of the three Squirrel hides to make a fire tool pouch for my son. I'll febreze them first, coz they STINK!! lolhaha Thanks Sara Andy
