Coming back yet again to watch this video I realize that this is my favorite Surfski video and the one I have watched the most since I started paddling a few years ago. Such beautiful and monstrous conditions!

Massive! One of the best downwinds on the internet. Great paddling, wave choice, editing... just right. Interesting that the waves are so big the video seems to be in slow motion, until you see how fast the boat is going, the spray is splashing, and the paddle is vibrating when it's down on a run. Nice to have your latest one be the best!

Thanks so much David. Most of it is in slow motion. Its the only way you can really see the waves forming and the size

Awesome video! Looks like the biggest conditions I've seen in any of your video's. How big were those waves?
@sharonbarmstrong

Thanks so much Chris.. not sure how big they were as that level wind was not predicted and i think that swell was actually wind swell only.

How is the moment when you find yourself looking at the ocean and think "let's do it"?
@sharonbarmstrong
Жыл бұрын
Ha Ha, I hear you, But it didn't look like this before we launched. the wind was only predicted at 30 knots and where we launch it looks like a lake. There was no ground swell predicted, that swell you see in the video was purely wind swell. The wind surprised us with 55 knots, almost double what it was predicted. That's why you have to be prepared for anything out there, the weather doesn't always come through as it was supposed to. I definitely wouldn't launch on purpose in a 55 knot wind.

Sharon, thanks for sharing this inspiring experience. I've only been paddling surf skis and using a wing paddle for about 3 months now. I can't hold a candle to your Durban clips, but a few days ago, had some good surfs in a gale in Seattle. Can you share more about how the gopro is mounted on your stern? Mine is mounted directly to the deck, so the camera angle leaves a bit to be desired, though I wonder if the higher mounting brings its own issues? Can you feel it affecting your balance? kzitem.info/news/bejne/yX2E2nWBj1-opmU

Hi Jordan, Thanks so much for the comment. I just use a goose neck go pro fitting for a tiny bit of height. Its not that that high and doesn't affect my balance but seems to give a good angle.

Thanks Sharon. Feeling more comfortable in the surf ski world now after paddling a Stellar SX18x for a year in all kinds of weather. Just purchased a Stellar Eagle which is next level skill building for me - much narrower ski (17.4 inches). Wondering what ski model you are using in this video - how wide it is? You look pretty stable on this downwind run in general. Thanks again for sharing your experience with newbies like me!
