Wild Edible Plants | Two Edible Forest Berries (Wintergreen & Partridge Berry)
Welcome back to our channel!
We are excited to introduce two new edible plants that you will most likely discover on a nature walk through the forest. The two berries grow in similar environments and both look a bit similar too! They are called wintergreen and partridge berry.
Wintergreen is commonly known for the minty flavor that we have in our toothpaste and mints, and mouth wash. We get this flavor from the wintergreen oils found in many plants but most famously the wintergreen! The low growing plant typically has bright red, pinkish berries in late winter/early spring. They have oval-shaped leaves that grow atop a red stem. This plant is easily mistaken for mountain laurel and poison ivy (both hazardous plants). After properly identifying the general shape of the plant, you can further prove your identification by breaking off a piece of the leaf and sniffing it. It should have a very minty fragrance.
Partridge berry also has red berries but these berries belong to a ground cover. These berries are most well-known by their pig snout or E.T. appearance. They grow on branches that have a dark green oval, almost, heart-shaped leaves that have a white stripe down the middle. The leaves are oppositely arranged along the stem. These berries, although edible, are not a desirable edible because they have virtually no taste. I describe it as a foam apple. It is a fun science fact to show friends though so I do encourage that you learn this one!
Whenever you are eating plants in the wild it is important that you have multiple sources that confirm your identification. Be sure that your plant matches the description 100%. You should be identifying by the color, leaf shape, leaf arrangement, and other features when applicable. You need to be 100% certain before consuming any plant in the wild and DO NOT use Wild and Growing as a reliable source, there are plenty of guidebooks out there that you can use instead. However, we hope that this video sparks your curiosity and that you begin exploring these incredible plants!
As always, thank you for watching,
Hannah & Richard
