That looks like an elderberry to me. My grandma called them "medicine berries". She made a syrup with them that grandpa and her would mix a spoonful of with water and drank with their breakfast. She also made a cough syrup from them. I don't know if that is the reason, but they both lived a very long life and were healthy for their age. Love that you named him Ernest. Perfect name. I think Ellie Mae would be cute for the little girl. Ellie Mae loved her "critters"...lol. Hope you and the family are well and happy. It's hard to believe it's the first of May. Ya'll have a great week ahead and God bless.

Hi Jarrod, I am quite good at tree identification and a handful of wildflowers, but I do not trust myself to accurately identify edible wild plants. If it was me I would contact the local state forestry office, or possibly the state botanist, to come out and give you a positive identification.

Most all elderberries have a toxin substance and eating raw is not recommended. Now once you cook them down they will be safe to eat. Elderberry can be identified by the characteristics on the leaves, which are oblong and have 'sawtooth' sharply serrated edges. You have to be careful as once they start to ripen the birds will come in and pick them clean. I throw a fleece over them right at the end and check them everyday. Mostly I win but them pesky birds are awful smart and sneaky! Have fun this summer!

Jared I know it's very important that you harvest only from American elderberry. I watched several videos on off grid with Doug and Stacy when Stacy went to an elderberry farm and interviewed the owner. I'm going to re-watch those videos but I think you should too. If that wild one is a European elderberry it would have the precursor to cyanide which will make someone very sick !!!

Yes that's elderberry. You can get cuttings off of those and make all the plants you want. Doug and Stacey have video on how to.

I live most of the country away from you, but your elderberries look like what is here in California. They grow near the river, here. Ours get about 12 or 15 feet high at most and are rounded on top. They're really hardy and take care of themselves. They're not quite 'invasive', but they can pop up.

I used to get some elderberry fruit spread when I went to Tamarack at Beckley. There should be some people in WV who can positively identify what you have.
