The good state of conservation of the habitats of the Park, makes it a strategic enclave to find some of the most emblematic species of the Cantabrian Mountains, because they find in Ponga an area conducive to their refuge, food and breeding.
Among the mammals, the otter (Lutra lutra) and the desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) stand out, bioindicating species of the good conservation status of the Park's river ecosystems. Others such as the piornal hares, endemism of the Cantabrian Mountains, which coexist with European hares, find one of their last refuges in the piornales and praderías of Ponga. Finally, point out the occasional presence of the brown bear (Ursus arctos), a species classified as Endangered, which locates in Peloño the westernmost limit in its distribution through the Asturian mountains.
Finally mention that the Natural Park of Ponga is included in the Natural Network as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). This is due to a rich and diverse birdlife, mainly composed of forest species, such as the Cantabrian capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus cantabricus) and the medium beak (Dendrocopos medius) or raptors such as the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus ) and the northern goshawk (Acipitter gentilis).
