If I was to have a guess I'd say that's ernie James the fen tiger. Lived off the land in welney. Didnt know him personally but had seen him in his later years in the village, he was a celebrity known and respected by all. He was master of eel trapping too. Anything ernie didn't know about the wetlands wasn't worth knowing about. A propper old school craftsman full of knowledge and his memory still lives on in welney. A propper legend

We think the wildfowler in this clip is Hagen Smart but agree Ernie James was up there with the best of the Fen Tigers.

Very nice video. This is the only one I have ever seen of one of these huge (4ga?) fowling guns being used as they were designed. A small note to any who may think this "cruel" or perhaps unfair for the sportsman-hunter to use such a weapon; these were NOT sportsmen. These were used exclusively by (poor) working-class men trying to earn a living and feed their families off the marshes/fens; in the same manner as their fathers had done for centuries. They did not hunt for "sport".

I grew up in London in the 1970's and learned to shoot (sporting clays) at the South London Shooting Grounds as a teenager. I made friends with my instructor who started me collecting different types of shotgun shells. He gave me a loaded 4ga shell and an unloaded what can only be described as a Howitzer shell, almost 12" long and 3" in diameter, both of which I still have. Judging by the bore of that cannon, its way bigger than a 4ga and mostly likely held one of these Howitzer-sized shells.

This looks to be a 1 & 1-1/2 punt gun.

looks like a 2 inch bore. The load would have been something like a half pound of black powder and a pound and a half or 6 shot.

@@crazyferret9409 Smaller, I should have thought - more like the typical 'half pound gun,' ie a two bore in traditional shotgun nomenclature.

Dude got a lot of muck in his face when firing...Some kind of shield would have been a good idea.

Yes, I quite agree. It adds some certainty to the thrill of the chase that I find reassuring in these uncertain times

Are you dumb as fuck? those birds were resting and got shot…one shot from that gun has over 20000 pellets per shot…it can easily kill 50 ducks with one shot Do your research before you speak
