That one about the background was very useful....I made that same mistake yesterday....at least I know for next time Question: i have a full frame camera which would be better for wildlife 300mm f2.8 vs 400mm f4 lens...i am wondering which is more important focal length or the apeture of the lens for bokeh? Which would you choose? I would take pictures of mammals not birds

@@sarahhuggins7217 Good question. You can work it out with a bit of crop factor math. If you cropped the 300mm to the same field of view as the 400mm lens, you would have an equivalent aperture of f/3.7. So the 300/2.8 would give you a bit more bokeh. Thanks for your comment!

My tips: always control position of the sun. It's important for the correct exposure. Shooting at dawn and at dusk can give the best results (find more about golden hour).

Great video! Another tip I would suggest is practicing on backyard birds, squirrels, etc. You can try out a bunch of different settings, shooting angles, and backgrounds. Very handy for beginners :)

Good video with useful information for beginners. I recommend going out early in the morning when no other people are around. Less distraction for the wildlife and more silence and nature for yourself.

Double up the shutter speed in relation to the focal length of the lens. 600MM = 1200 SS. This is at least a start to ensure you have sharp pictures.

Related to tip no. 3: as well as having the camera on hand, it's good to make sure your settings are roughly right for the environment you're in so that when you see something you maximise your chances of getting a decent shot straight away!

Brilliant tutorial Rob. It sums up the main tips for Bird photography. I am struggling with my PD sling strap. Can you let me know how you set it up? Thank you in advance!

I think it shows you in the manual (which is exactly how I do it). Square plate attaches to the tripod socket with the quick release loop/thing on the left corner of that square plate. The other one goes on the right hand side where the camera strap usually connects. Then connect the strap ends to those. I like it over my left shoulder with the camera on my right - adjust the length until it sits nicely on your hip. 👌

If you want to take shots of birds in flight remember that most birds especially the larger ones take off into the wind. Great video Rob, can you do one on Kingfishers?

lol I would hope so with a $5000 lens and a $4000 camera. I don't know too many beginners with that kind of set up.

Do you recommend any certain time of the day for photographing wildlife? Just wondering when you typically head out. Thanks!

It depends on a lot of things, but in general, early morning is hard to go wrong. Try to look for soft light or interesting conditions. Some animals are more active at other times of day, like dusk.

Very good. Not too far from my home there is a wildlife refuge that has an 8 mile gravel road. I find that you are better off photographing certain bird species from your car because it acts like a moving blind. This seems to be true with the seasonal migrating birds such as Egrets.

My tip is shoot Lumix because you reach far and its "cheap" Nah jokes. Shoot whatever you like and do it as much as you can then all the tips will be revealed to you. I literally go out every possible second I can!

How does that sling strap work out when you’re hiking, does it bounce around a lot of you aren’t holding it? I’m looking for a way to carry my camera while backpacking and have it ready for when I see wildlife.
@RobBlight

No it doesn't! That's one of the reasons I like it so much. You adjust the length so it sits at just the right height on your hip, then it won't bounce. Also the way one end of the strap attaches to the bottom of the camera makes all the difference - it sits so much more snug. Thanks for watching.
