@@stixinst5791 It’s called a prescription burn and not a controlled burn for a reason! It’s plausible, but not that probable. Better than 70 people (in America) who die from wildfires a year. I know it’s a grim topic, but one wildfire in California (2020) killed 33 people. I have multiple family members who are firefighters and work in the forest service. The prescription burns that the forest service do are so incredibly regulated, like, they will only do about a square mile at a time, and only have a 5 hour time frame during the day to do the burn, and won’t even start the fire if there’s “too many clouds,” I’ve heard that one before too many times. They pay attention to all variables, the MPH of wind, air pressure, moisture content, atmospheric temperatures, a ton goes into it. This guy seems smart enough to pay attention to stuff like that, although I can totally see a random Joe Schmoe hearing “controlled burn” and thinking they can do it on any given moment. Oh, and according to the NIH, the number of people who die or get severely injured from burnover averages to 3 a year. I hope that sheds some light to the topic! A lot of people find it scary or unsafe, but it’s only scary and unsafe in the hands of those not well studied in the topic! I like comparing it to chiropractors 😂

If we continued cutting fireline the northwest wouldn't always be on fire Alot of our fires came because of attempts to prevent deforestation. @applepie9786

@@shannonrichards254 That statement is pretty ridiculous. Old growth forests are some of the most fire resistant forests, and most of those have already been cut down. The reason why forest fires are so common now is climate change causing hotter and drier climate. West coast trees in general evolved to survive small underbrush fires which were more common due to cooler/wetter climate back than. If there was more funding for controlled brush fires as seen in this video, there would be far less huge fires.

What’s really interesting is snow can make fires harder to control. If you didn’t hear, there was a massive wild fire around this time last year near Santa Fe New Mexico. The forestry department was doing controlled burns and thought they had put out the fire well, but a small flame caught UNDER the snow and traveled over a mile to a clearing where it caught. It grew massive before it was noticed, and by that point it couldn’t be easily stopped. They tried putting it out but eventually had to dig fire trenches. 2 years back I made a mistake....it was 2 am Christmas day, I'm sewing away trying to finish up a gift, the fireplace has been going basically non stop for a week now. We usually dumped the ashes in a bare spot on the fence line, it's never been an issue because we clear out ashes in the morning, when the fires cooled off and at most there's a few small brickets going in the fireplace, so the ashes that have fallen through a grate have cooled off. Anyhow, it's around 2, I'm pooped, but I figure I'll top the fire off to keep it going overnight and hopefully have a bit more brickets to work with in the morning. The ash is full and I figure might as well clean it. I see a few embers in this particular ash when I dumped it so I stomp them, and get back to sewing. About 30 minutes later I've hit a wall and decide okay time for bed. I just had a feeling I needed to look outside, check the surroundings. I see an small glow coming off my partners truck, and I'm so fucking tired I'm just confused. I go outside and see a good 20 x 40 foot patch of rough brush fence line just burning away. Nothing too tall, but some of the old dried trees are getting charred. So we spend the next 2 hours hosing, checking if that's smoke or steam, hosing, raking, shoveling to get it to stop. Thankfully we got it all put out, but I was so ashamed of being reckless I got a metal trash can for the ash the next day. About a year later though I saw how much wildlife particularly enjoyed that area, all the birds hang out in those charred trees, bunnies run through there often. Sometimes there's happy accidents. I plan on doing a controlled intentional fire sometime soon 🙂

@@Sunshine_Daydream222 you’re not wrong, however the nutrient depletion depends on fire intensity. Low intensity fires are generally the best. Soils can absolutely sterilize for a short time during high intensity fires. When it comes to Rx fire we are playing the long game. As a firefighter and a home owner who fought the biggest wildfire in Colorado history I would like to say while fires are normal they are only beneficial in extremely small and controlled environments. Fires being good for the environment is a huge lie that unfortunately too many people believe. These people have not had the chance to walk around in a forest that once was lush and green but is now chard black and sterile. Or got to pull body's of people out of rivers that have flooded because of the lack of ground cover to absorb the water. Or got to help clean up after those floods. And help clean up and rebuild friends and family's properties that have been destroyed by fire. What is truly beneficial is forest management. Through logging and selective cutting. Not just burning it down.

I wonder if they do prescribed fires in Australia. They don't in California, US, which is why they have crazy wildfires every few years
@zaxi0
Жыл бұрын
@@AngryAlfonse we do, it's called a burn off, it's normally done in the summer on certain days where the fire danger warning is at its lowest. You have to follow a ton of strict rules like having a minimum of 4 people at the burning, a fire pump filled with tons of water on standby before, during and after the burning, and a ploughed fire break be put in, clearing away some shrub wouldn't do cause fire can jump. They can be really useful in trying to contain the fires but when you have gum trees that combust incredibly easily there's nothing you can really do

Only takes some small wind and your back turned for a short moment and everything is up in flames. Just happened at my house not too long ago (I was asleep, someone else was handling the fire). Half the property was burnt black. All in a matter of minutes. I got up maybe 10, 15 minutes after the fire was first started, went to have a smoke, and as soon as I stepped outside I saw nothing but a black backyard. It’s definitely a not-so-peaceful feeling lol

Wind, and how dry it is really affects how well fire spreads. Also different places have different rules about when a permit is needed, in my area if reported the FD will show up put it out and fine you.

As a hotshot. I’d like to say. It’s easy to control a small fire, you already lit, on a calm day, in relatively moist fuels. I agree. It is not however, as simple as you made it seem. Lots variables. Fire line is just one part, and that wasn’t really fire line, you just moved leaves. Which does work. In certain forests.

Every summer I work at a boy scout camp as a commissioner. Part of my job is lighting "the burn pile", consisting of all of our cardboards, scrap wood, and other burnable refuse. My favorite thing is every summer bringing a bunch of people up there and watching them freak out at how big it gets. As long as you maintain your burn area, keep plenty of water and a communication device nearby, and just watch it, nothing will go wrong.

Imagine reasoning after the woods are gone to police, fire department and the like that you learned on the Internet shorts how easily you can control fires. You might end up in prison and I’d vote for it!so before you risk a whole wood and your freedoms let alone possible injury, yours or others think twice or more talk with somebody who has pertaining knowledge and not from tok tok, you’ll be the one st the loosing end all the time and that’s no joke and not meant to scare you but to get you thinking!
