The EU is one of the biggest importers of exotic animals who end up kept as pets in inappropriate conditions. Why? There are many loopholes in EU legislation that allow for this trade to continue.
In this video, from the series “Animal welfare, explained”, we interview two experts on wildlife trade policy, Aubrey Collins (Wild Animal Policy Coordinator, FOUR PAWS), Nick Clark (Wildlife Programme Leader, Eurogroup for Animals) who explain that there are thousands of animal species currently traded live within and into the EU, including species protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
But there are ways in which the EU can tackle its wildlife trade problem: criminalising the import of illegally sourced-wildlife and introducing an EU-wide ‘Positive List’, that is, a concise list of animals deemed suitable for private keeping as the only animals allowed to be kept as pets.
