I don’t agree that Haiti is a democracy. As a matter of fact we no longer have elections in Haiti. And the U.S. makes sure after the 2004 elections, the Haitian people will never again elect their own leaders to power.

Wasn't Haiti greatly destroyed by the Duvalier dictatorships? Besides other factors?

The previous dictatorships did not work and made things worse. Haiti needs a Chinese style government under one nationalist party rule. Only China could help Haiti on this path.

Hayti will never be able to reproduce China's meteoric economic rise, because Hayti does not have the same allure that led to western nations outsourcing their manufacturing/industrial industries to China. This allure is the fact that China has one of the largest labor forces in the world, which provided western businesses with cheap and plentiful labor. As a matter of fact, most of China's core socialist principles failed miserable under Mao which was evident by tens of millions dying due to starvation and China continuing to be one of the poorest nations in the world under Mao's rule. It wasn't until Mao's death and the new Chinese "socialist" party did China's economy improve around the late 1970s. The reason why I have "socialist" in quotes is because China's new economic policies were actually extremely capitalistic in the form of China allowing foreign businesses to invest in Chinese markets and labor force. The small twist was that Chinese leaders had the foresight to reduce foreign autonomy within China by requiring that all western businesses had to coordinate with existing Chinese businesses. Also, the Chinese invested in their own infrastructure to support these new business/factories in China. By this, I mean that foreign businesses would go to China to exploit their labor force, China would agree, but China would be the ones to build the factories themselves and pressure the western businesses to transfer the technology/knowledge to Chinese workers under the guise that it would make the manufacturing process more efficient, but the main benefit was that it allowed China to be economically independent. This is in contrast to how western businesses (and ironically and China) operate in Africa, where western businesses will build their own factories in foreign nations and only use the local population for low-level cheap labor which makes it impossible for the native people to be economically independent from foreign businesses. Not only is China incapable or helping Hayti, but in all likelihood China will exploit Hayti similar to how it exploits naïve poor nations (Malaysia, Pakistan, some African nations) with its debt traps via the Belt and Road Initiative. Speaking of which, another KZitem commentator is correct in stating that the BRI is a way for China to trick naïve nations to take out loans to pay for Chinese contractors and Chinese contractors to build the infrastructure for railways, ports, and other trade routes. This of course overwhelmingly benefits China since the entire purpose of having major national construction projects is to employ the indigenous/native people who live in that nation...not to employ the ones giving out the loans. This is why many the nations apart of the BRI still have high unemployment and struggling economies - its because the BRI is largely a scheme by China to address the hyper-competition and growing unemployment in China by giving them jobs oversees to satisfy construction projects in foreign nations. If nations like Indonesia responsibly use the loans to make their economy better, then that is good for China since the loans will be repaid and China employed some of its workers for a period of time. However, it doesn't matter if the poor nations default on loans, because the Chinese will enter predatory deals where they own 90% of revenue from ports, not to mention that the Chinese contractors/workers will establish permanent residence in their foreign nations and slowly influence the economic and political destinies of these nations to be more pro-Chinese. Again, this is intentional and reflects Chinese principles of economic and industrial independence in the face of a global market which resulted in China being the hub of manufacturing in the world....well economic independence for China, but China evidently does not care about economic liberation for other nations. Anyways, the point that I am making is that Chinese success has more to do with China being a desirable market for western businesses to outsource cheap labor. It didn't really matter if China adopted a "socialist" policy or a conventional democratic policy, because the end result would have been the same....as long as China opened up its markets to other nations....aka become more capitalistic. Haiyti does NOT have this luxury. For this reason, it makes no sense to adopt Chinese economic policies, which in principle has not even worked for countries that neighbor China. Hayti is in a precarious situation because most of its exports can be satisfied by other agricultural powerhouses from China, Canada, Brazil, and the US. Hayti may attract investment from businesses, but the deals won't be as one-sided as what China secured during the 1980s, because the US learned from its greed and does not want to deal with a mini-China in its territory. The west is more content with Hayti being is disarray because this results in Haytians immigrating to Canada and US where the Haytians will occupy high demand, low supply jobs like agricultural laborer, factory workers, and in healthcare (such as nursing assistants). Also, western powers will NEVER allow any nation that is predominantly black and is pan-Africanistic to have a strong nation, because this directly challenges white supremacy. BTW, it is a myth that the Chinese economy is doing well. China's economy is under threat of a major collapse - moreso than the current economic dilemma in the US. This is because the Chinese has an intricate system whereby their provinces are encourage to misreport and use other dubious methods to meet their quotes for GDP growth. In addition, China has an extensive history of lying about....well everything pertaining to its statistics. We do know that the housing market is beginning to collapse, but that's mainly because western investors got caught in this maelstrom so China has to be somewhat transparent with the rest of the world to keep foreign investors in the housing sector. Besides that, China has very high unemployment despite having a very high number of college graduates. Lastly, Chinese corruption is unparalleled compared to anywhere else in the world; we are talking about high-ranking Chinese politicians (including Xi Jinping) having a combined trillions in dollars spread across assets and investments in the US alone. This is why the notion of China being socialist is nonsense; its a marketing tool that not even the Chinese people believe. I wouldn't be surprised if a major internal revolution to overthrow the Chinese government occurs within the next 50 years because of the absurd level of plundering that Chinese politicians partake in.

This video is one of the rare analysis of Haiti that does not go back to French Colonial times. Which is the proper thing. Events of 50 years ago are much more relevant than events of 200 yrs ago to understand Haiti's current problems. Which is the optimum pursuit: pursuit of Democracy? pursuit of Peace? Peace can be reached without Democracy. What a heretical thought!!! I am talking about Peace of the Living, NOT Peace of the Dead. There can be Democracy without Peace: such Democracy cannot be sustained for long. Which is the optimum pursuit: pursuit of Liberty? pursuit of Equality? Liberty promotes Action. Liberty allows one to reach maximum potential. Equality does not promote Action. Equality promotes Judgement. Equality promotes Comparison. The Bed of Procrustes is the agent of Equality: You are too tall? Cut off your feet. You are too short? Stretch your spine. Very few fit the bed exactly. The Ancient Greeks warned about ostentatious living. Why? Answer: ostentatious living promotes J.E.A.R. (Jealousy, Envy, Anger, Resentment) amongst the less successful. Yes, Democracy was first coined by the Ancient Greeks who also had no problem with Slavery and Abortion. The pursuit of Equality promotes J.E.A.R., the life blood of Socialism. Which is the optimum pursuit: pursuit of Economic Power? pursuit of Political Power? Those who have economic power do not have to pursue political power: they can BUY the political power. Those who have long-term economic success had to honest in their dealings with the public; otherwise they will suffer the wrath of the people. The fly-by-night scammers do not have economic power. Those pursuing political power are very susceptible to corruption for politicians make a lot of promises, especially promises of material benefits (bread and circus), which they cannot fulfill. Yes, there is the issue of monopolies. Oligarchs are associated with monopolies. Many monopolies exist only with sanction of Government. Many monopolies exist despite Government. The animus should be against Government, not the so-called oligarchs. Haiti has a low-trust culture. The focus on equality engenders J.E.A.R. and thus reinforces low-trust culture. In the spirit of J.E.A.R. the Government trust only a few players, thus producing State-sanctioned monopolies. Some oligarchs run natural monopolies: if a person is the only one capable to provide a certain good/service then said person has a natural monopoly. Haiti is a small country with a low Human Development Index (HDI) so natural monopolies are easy to establish. The pundits say that elections will remedy Haiti's problems. Nope. One will just replace 1 set of bad buys with another set of bad guys. Main problem is institutional corruption. Yes, the first step is to eliminate the current gangs but a full and honest understanding of how and why the gangs came about is needed. Basic rule of Law needs to be established. Really basic. Property Rights connected to proper individual identity. Hernando de Soto, a Peruvian economist, understood that property rights are needed for economic progress. The Clinton Administration had the correct idea to reform the legal system in Haiti but found the records of ownership of land and businesses were very poor and frauds of all kinds were common. Land reform is needed. Proper identification of individuals is needed (with accurate birth and death certificates). For a time, foreign administration of Customs, Post-Office, Ports, and other Government Institutions is needed. Also K-16 curriculum needs to reformed. Unfortunately > 90% of haitian intellectuals are socialists. To paraphrase the philosopher The Joker, Haiti needs an enema. I am amused by talking heads discussing without end about transition committees, United Nations programs, and other such "democratic" trivialities. The Ancient Greeks had it correct: the machinery of democracy is always too slow to fix a crisis. To fix a crisis the Ancient Greek Elders appoint a tyrant whose orders are followed without question. Key: without question; because questioning (via democratic process) takes too long while the crisis worsens. What are the characteristics of the ideal tyrant? Answer: Reputation for honesty, integrity, virtue, experience, wisdom, and VIOLENCE; and nationwide respect. The tyrant is chosen from the citizenry; the tyrant cannot be a foreigner. Also: the tyrant is wise enough to retreat from power when the crisis is solved away. Usually the tyrant has to exert violence upon those damaging the citizenry. Violence brings about primordial fear and respect is the underlayer of fear. One cannot fear without respect. Fear may foment Resentment and still respect lingers with Resentment. Respect of the capability of the tyrant to eliminate you. Kenyan Police does not cut it. While the pundits, empty talking heads, politicians, intellectuals emitting hot air pollution about Transition Committees and Assorted Plans, Haiti needs to find its Tyrant (in the Ancient Greek meaning), its Cincinnatus. If Haiti can find a Toussaint L'Ouverture (NOT J.J. Dessalines) as tyrant, so much the better. Haiti needs to find its Bukele. Dictatorship or democracy? Dictatorship first. Democracy second. Competencies for Dictatorship are different from those for Democracy. P.S. A commentator has the silly notion that China can help Haiti. Nope. The Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) is just a work program for Chinese workers. At least 70% of the workforce of BRI projects are Chinese workers. China has a debt problem and the BRI projects transfer debt from China to foreign countries.

Badly and poorly constructed questions will undoubtedly bring truncated and pre ordained answers. Terrorist mercenaries that are bent in destruction cannot be regarded as either democratic nor dictatorial since they are jobbers....Furthermore, colonies do not enjoy the right to choose a system of government.

@@mixtapemania6769 I see many comments and even videos that desire a Chinese or Russian alliance... which could only work if Haiti was in a position where they had leverage. Simply having natural resources is NOT enough to prevent nations that are adversarial to the US from _taking advantage_ of Haiti's political upheaval and economic challenges and ultimately enslaving Haitian people to work in sweatshops... at least in the China scenario.
