I just got a baritone guitar and I'm finding that the wider fret spacing is physically allowing me to "see" note choices I've never thought of before. I only play originals and it's opening up all kinds of new ideas. I'm 55 and I've been playing since I was 12 so any fresh inspiration is totally welcome. I'm really loving the baritone!

Mix templates are great. You find something you like and you're like "Yeah this is cool. If I need to EQ different I can, if I need to adjust guitar tones for the composition I can always do that as well." as long as you keep the VSTs enabled in the FX section. It really helps if you're doing a lot of stuff, so you have the tracks available to you such as guitars (however many layers), bass and drums.

Hey TB! I hear ya. The fastest way I found to cover all of it is to block out one day a week and schedule everything working entirely from desktop. Collect things over the week and do all of the formatting, copywriting and tags in one clump. That takes about 11 hours for 13 profiles, not including the archiving and notes as I go throughout the week prior. Ultimately I found that the archiving was massively taking me out of the creative flow of my most important work. Also, after doing all of it that for a while and evaluating the results, it's seems that it's hurting me more than helping. My traffic source analytics on my principle sites, showing traffic coming from Insta and FB to be under 2%.KZitem and Bandcamp drive over 70%. So I'm just going to focus on what works for a little while until I have a more stable footing. Ultimately, I'd like to hire an assistant. But, I don't make that kind of money yet. Cheers! Bunn

Oh, you also have Asperger's! For me, I notice nutrition has a non-negligible effect on how well I cope with it. Supplementing L-methionine, Alpha Lipoic Acid and TMG has been a big help for me to cope with my Asperger's symptoms as well as reducing my intake of caffeine, sugar and free glutamate (the latter can be found in dairy, gluten, MSG), whilst increasing my intake of whole foods. Don't expect wonders like some internet gurus claim, or go overboard with eliminating foods or high supplement dosage (all sorts of side effects can start to pop up, trust me, I've been there). However, at least it makes a difference to have a more continuous creative flow, to have less anxiety and to be able to organize my life a bit better.

Hello Demonstealer! I hope you are having a rad day! It's a very interesting topic to me. I've been observing a pile of creatives for the last few months. I've noticed that those enjoying some sort of success are "workaholics" or were workaholics and that process allowed them to finally chill a bit. I do not yet feel like I'm a workaholic. There have been a bunch of things for me to make sense of in the past year. That said, I think that I'm mentally ready for it. My ethic up until now has been "at least one thing towards my goals every single day". Some days I do up to 3 things.. And that process got me further than I imagined. Now that I have that bit of footing, I want to be a workaholic for a bit and see where that goes. I think that it will be the thing that will allow me to chill a bit more in the end. We'll see what happens... Hahaaaa!!! Cheers! Bunn

CozBoogie! You are speaking my language!!! It's true, I use the same process for every thing that requires creativity. In the end, creativity is more similar to problem solving than most artists would like to admit. I think that the "romance" of an art practice and being "pure" infects a lot of artists to attempt to discard their intention. But the effort to discard intention is an intention and so the snake eats it's tail. The "creativity" of the universe is the interaction of existing materials and forces under the conditions of a specific state at a specific time. It can look like magic depending on the conditions of observation. But usually the illusion of "magic" is only the result of the inability of the observer to observe at the right scale or time or angle etc.. I LOVE THIS TOPIC!!!!!! Hahaaaaa!!!! Cheers! Bunn

I really like the logical aspect to how you tackle making music. I’m a feeling person, so for me I have to feel the music in a different way than logically process it. Even though the act helps me logically process it. I can put myself in a mode of feeling, which isn’t too difficult for me. I just have to force myself to feel what I want to make and put that feeling into the sound. It’s less like making that my mood, as more of an automatic writing type situation. I love how I create! I know if I was more logical I’d probably be a lot better at my instrument and instrumentation. It’s not like I’ve even mastered my way of doing it either, because I haven’t. Maybe if I combine some methods it may help. I’m on a productivity kick this year, trying to grind my art, your channel has definitely been a blessing for this! Im not working on making money at this stage, just consistency and focus. Your work is really inspiring me! Glad the algorithm gods gifted me the chance to peek your videos!

Hey Bunn! I love this show so damn much! I'm gonna make my move over to the M1 and Helix Stomp towards the end of the year, as I am moving to Europe in January, and its the only setup I can fit in a suitcase. I'm still working on some new jams, but I know that 2023 is gonna be the year where I tackle this project for myself and do my own "Can I make a solo career out of doing niche music", niche being doom, shoegaze, all that, with very specific details. Some of the new ideas I have for Sleepy Drifter are turning out pretty wicked, and I'm hoping I can get them done soon enough. I'm working on an EP atm, but with all the stuff regarding the move, time is restricted but everything is going smoothly. I'm sick of procrastinating. When I get moved in, I'm setting up the camera, and I'm gonna do some videos in a similar way, where I just take a baritone I have, and shoot it out against genres and other gear and see what happens! I'm so thrilled, and so stoked, and I can't wait to get this all out there!

Hey OA, Yeah, I think you are going about it in the smartest way. It's not so much that social is a waste of time as much as it's about being where your audience / potential audience is so that the whole thing functions as a kind of community and everybody wins. Some platforms are going to be better than others for that community. When it works, it works really well, when it bombs, it's telling us to do things different. One other thing I've noticed is that Folks tend to focus only on the most popular platforms, but in reality, certain niches may have a higher percentage of of users on a secondary platform. The key is to communicate with our communities as much as possible to find out where the preferred place to hang out is. Could be Snapchat, Pinterest, LinkedIn... For myself, I know that KZitem, Bandcamp and my website are where I need to focus right now. But it took a bit of research to realize it. Best of luck. I hope you find the glue that gets you stoked! I can very well identify with the "have everything ready to go" approach. It started very early when I was playing the saxophone and I could never really get myself to practice as much as I wanted / needed. So someday someone suggested I get a sax stand so I didn't have to take it out of the case and assemble it every time. Also that way it was always kind of "in sight". Whenever I walked through the room I saw it sitting there, waiting for me, so I almost automatically grabbed it and started playing. The same is happening today. I have my guitars and bass sitting next to my chair in their stands, ready to go, the cable is hanging on the side of my desk and already connected to the interface. I have saved templates for my DAWs that automatically load whenever I open a new project. There I have my drum vst already set up and routed, the guitar, bass and vocal tracks are already there and set up routing wise, a rudimentary mastering chain is there to be adjusted to taste, I have VU meters and gain plugins on every track etc, the mic is always hooked up, everything is ready to go. When inspiration hits I feel there is nothing worse than having to set everything up first, getting distracted by something not working or taking too long. For me, that kills the drive instantly. Also I second putting fb and insta aside. I don't really use Instagram but am fairly active on Facebook. However, for reaching a new audience I don't think it's worth it. I've come to find that the only real band-related content that I actually pay attention to on there is about tour dates and / or news-worthy stuff like line-up changes etc by bands I am already a big fan of. I rarely ever discover new stuff there except the odd recommendation in a fringe music group, which then is usually a link to a KZitem video anyways. I mostly discover music on KZitem. After that it used to be spotify but I am trying to get away from that and rarely ever use it anymore. Whenever a band I already follow puts out new music, I usually also learn of that via email, Bandcamp or KZitem. Even if I read about it on fb I usually go to yt and search for it there haha. Facebook just doesn't have that vibe, idk.

Awesome and inspirational video as always! Quick question, I also write in blocks, and the way my brain works is to write one kick ass block with guitars, bass and drums, but once I have the blocks, I have a hard time connecting them. It doesn't really sound fluid, but rather, like a quilt a grandma would make with a bunch of stuff just sown together lol. What tips would you give me? Thx brother!
@thebunn
2 жыл бұрын
Brother Carlos! How are you Sir? I hope all is rad with you. Yesssss! The blocks! First thing is to be sure that the key of all of the parts is correct. Eg: C Blues Minor, or E Major, or G Natural Minor, etc... Pick one.. Whichever one you love most. Being strict with the key opens up a world of possibilities. If you want key changes, it's easier to modulate keys after you have a bit of an arrangement. That said, modulation is very advanced and there is not enough space here to cover that. The second thing is that some modes are troublesome. Writing in the Locrian mode for example... it just wants to resolve to the Natural Minor. Most of the modes want to resolve. So knowing harmony theory really well is good if you want to do that sort of stuff. But yeah, #1. Nail down the key of your tune. #2. Have a clear understanding of the time signature. A regular 4/4 beat has a lot of room to move. But a 4 shuffle is extremely limiting (at least it is for me but for some reason I keep wanting to use them...) Similar to 3/4 or 6/8, they are way more challenging to expand upon rhythmically in a composition. I use 3 and 6 a lot and still find it a challenge. That all said, being really clear on what the foundation is really helps in building up from that foundation and expanding on the theme of the overall composition. Hope that helps. This is ultimately something that is best covered in person, but hopefully it at least inspires a few thoughts. Cheers! Bunn

I m working on a similar project of my own but more funk metal or Motown gone weird. Doing the arts, band characters + music/ recording. It's quite an endeavour and takes a lot of mind space ! But I am happy to see that I seem to be using the same fundamental process and DAW/plugins as you 😅It's actually motivating to have your videos to put me back in the right mindset ! Thanks!

Sounds dumb but how does everyone learn to actually program drums? I always get lost and ultimately kills my flow lol. Bunn what DAW do you use?
@BLeeFAFO
2 жыл бұрын
I believe he uses Reaper, Which is a great DAW though you can get sucked into rabbit holes with any of them if you're not careful lol. I started on Cakewalk way back in the early 00's, went with ACID for years, Tried Reaper & AM currently using the modern Cakewalk. Most people programming drums us MIDI, But it's always given me more headaches than not. I suggest learning to program on something like Beatcraft which you can drag and drop your own WAV samples into an create grids for. I still use it primarily along with some loops occasionally. Anyways kudos for taking the plunge.
@thebunn
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Marcus, Brent is correct, I use Reaper. With writing drum MIDI, the key is to study drums at least a little bit. You don't need drums to do it, you can tap your hands on your lap and just tap your feet on the floor. That and to listen to a lot of drums. Gospel drumming is really good to study because it is full of all of the chops and feels that you could ever want to learn. And they are applicable to almost any other music. Cheers! Bunn

I have a Facebook and Instagram page but am not shure they will prove to be really useful on the long run. I still think as an indie artist, a web site, a mailing list, YT channel and bandcamp page should do the work to reach out for fans and followers. There is too much noise on Instagram and FB to stand out and their UI grew to become kind of a mess where is't not focused and not clear what you see, what you don't between those ads, "recommended" stuff and ridiculous short videos.

Hey dude, great video. I was just thinking about what could be some additional income streams for you. I run a guitar website and have been spending a lot of time recently gearing up to create some online courses, and I think there are two really obvious course ideas for you that you could sell to your mailing list. One is your OEC system, and the other would be around recording/mixing super low tuned music. The key to selling a course is that you don't sell a technique, you sell a framework with an outcome. You already have a framework in the OEC system, you just have to come up with a snazzy framework title for how you record and mix low tuned music and you're ready to go there too. Let me know if this is interesting and I'll shoot you some things to look into. Not trying to sell you anything, just think what you're doing is cool and I like to see people succeed. Cheers.

Whichever aspect is giving you the least return on investment loosen your grip. Don't let it go entirely. Little tricks like that can help social media blogging be less if a pain in the ass. Basically take a full length something-a video, a song-and repurpose it for social sites. Take a new song just grab a 30 second piece, find a visual for it, put it on instagram. Take clips from your KZitem vids and create smaller bite clips to post to your other social sites all while your exporting your full length video. Take screen shots of frames from a videos to post on Insta.

Listening to some right now, it's been over an easy 10 years since my last listen. I forgot how much playing they do. There is a LOT of riffing, but it's always catchy. Totally fun tunes. Good call man! Ya know, I'm really trying to focus on that balance of "hooky" riffs but still with that "art school" vibe that I'm so jazzed on. It's challenging, but that challenge is super fun.
