That thing runs perfect. You should put a transmission in it when you are able. It would make a great work truck for the channel, and it would pay for itself in time. 302 sounded pretty decent when you started cranking it. Wasn't sounding like erratic compression. I was surprised. Those transmissions aren't expensive to rebuild - in a '79 the C6 seems to be the common one - and the body's solid. This is a fixer. To put the lock cylinder back in the switch, stick a paper clip in the small hole on the face of the switch with the key in the cylinder and, if I recall correctly, turn to ACC.

That could be Kat. It was in reverse when I first started it, and I was able to get it into reverse a couple of times. The second day I was there the fluid was a very odd color, almost milky, so a change might make a difference.
@todddenio3200
Жыл бұрын
@@whattherust a lot of people don't realize that when a vehicle sits for a long time the transmission fluid sometimes will be separated. There is paraffin wax in ATF that can separate and when it does, it tends to accumulate on the filter and plugs it up and starves the transmission of fluid preventing it from working. It will also be separated throughout the transmission so once the filter is changed, if it starts to work, even if it is working very poorly, either let it run until it is at operating temperature or find a way to heat the fluid, then cycle the transmission through the gears, then do a full transmission fluid flush and change, then it is ready for testing how well it works when driving it. In the case of separated fluid it needs to be brought up to operating temperature to remelt the paraffin wax back into the fluid so it can be completely flushed from the system or it will cause there to be too much paraffin wax in the new fluid which can destroy the transmission. Plus for some reason, once it has separated the first time, it will do it again any time the truck is parked for a few weeks or longer and will plug the filter and passages again lus it causes the steel check balls in the valve body to stick in place and stop the fluid from being redirected to the different passages for shifting into and engaging the different gears. I have encountered this a few times and it was a surprise how well it worked once a new filter and new fluid were put in after a good flush.

Hi Richard, greetings from Scotland. That’s a real shame about the transmission. The truck itself is very cool, and is worthy of saving. When you started it initially it sounded really rough, but actually as it warmed up it sounded very smooth, and not rough at all. The body looked in very good condition, and it would be a travesty if it got scrapped. Would you consider buying it and swapping in a working transmission? Seeing it back on the road and scrubbed up would make an excellent video. I’m No expert on prices in the US of course, but I’m sure there would be a market for this in working condition. Anyway thanks as usual for a very thoughtful video, and an interesting vehicle. All the best, John.

Get your sponsors to load it up so you have all you need. Swap engine for something with more torque say 460. Still pull combo trailer car/camper for the out of the way places. These guys that show up and expect a 15 year old battery to turn over and start an engine just amazes me. They never have belts nor hoses. Maybe I’m the one doing it wrong. Hard to believe that truck was 20 years old when it was parked. It's been sitting longer than it was on the road for. That transmission fluid does look like it has water in it. I bet the trans cooler in the radiator failed and it's letting coolant into the transmission. I know a guy with a 72 F250 that happened to. Didn't take long for the coolant to strip the friction material off all of the clutches.

I thought the same thing Richard! I could put all my tools in it, put the air tanks in the bed, and have everything I need.

@@whattherust, even worse, they are more plastic than metal and so computerized that you have to pay exorbitant prices to get one fixed if the computers screw up. That old Ford is a far better truck than any of the new trucks will ever be. And you can bet NONE of the new trucks could be restarted after being abandoned as long as this one has been.

great video. sorry you were not able to move it due to dead tranny. perhaps if you told the owner how good it runs. he might try to do something about the tranny. perhaps you can help with that. enjoyed your video. :)😀

I know this sounds crazy, did you check to see if the driveshaft was there? I know if it was undone at the chunk it might make noise but if it was undone at the tranny with just a yoke stuck in it you wouldn't know at all.

That is an interesting thought Eric. It did pop into reverse a couple of times, so I think the driveshaft is connected, but it is worth a check.

Tough luck on this truck. Offer the owner scrap price 12 cents a pound. You know that in a few months that a tranny will fall into your lap and you'll wish ya did. That engine seems solid. Not a smoker.

aw, a rarity. looks like somebody gave up their business so hard they didn't even bother cleaning the storage out... and the motor started at first turn of the crank! my old Ford Taunus gave up on that when europe invited new "improved" gasoline qualities... I'm dented! I mean, impressed! the utility body looks like it could be helpful for Mototcross drivers to transport two or three bikes and spares and tools in one go. but they'd still need a place to sleep... anyway, great work again. too bad the transmission is out of comission. I still hope you or someone else can take care of it before they scrap it, would be a shame now that it runs again. btw, I wonder what happened to the front half of that pickup bed...

Either my hearing's shot or my volume was too low. Thought Richard said, "Newt Gingrich," when he actually said "Ring ridge." I care more about freeing up an engine over politics. Yeah, I'll get my hearing checked.
