I have a H1 model 140 also with a classic 33 tiller, but its in a time capsule condition that i still till with today,( yesterday ) and the older 92 year old man that own it bought it new from his son in law that was a JD dealer, who did all the service work on it, the old man never mowed with it and just used it to till his garden up,,as he had a cheaper mower to use and to mow with ,one of those old mowers that you sit on top of the motor and it just had one steering wheel in front that was diectly shalft to the operators steering wheel,so the JD 48 inch deck with it still has paint under it and on the orginal blades. Its very nice and you can bet thats how it became a time capsule ,,those garden tractors are worth fixing up and restoring for sure

Removing the total seat deck is very easy so to service the hydro pump etc is quite easy ,and couple bolts, but it is heavy to lift off ,and everything is under and easy to adjust if needed,,manuals are on line to download free

If it keeps smoking ,try a little trans fluid in the engine so to free up the piston rings ,just run it awhile before changing it out for some good 15 40 weight after,as it should free everything up

Nice work. Probably safe to assume all of these 70s 140s have had their engines rebuilt at some point, unless they've clearly been garage queens.

My garden is 45 x60 ft. Quite a bit larger and my 140 tills it with ease, a new tractor today of the same quaility and size would cost many thousands today

Make sure you lub up and grease that tiller accordining to the manual you can view from on line,,i have the extesions in my 33 tiller making it quite wide,,i would paint and re decal the total machine you have there and it's a nicer expensive H2 model , changing the hydro fluid with Hy Guard John Deere fluid is much better for the hydro pump ,,and its cheaper trans fluid

Appreciate the video. With the camera that far away viewers cannot see what the tiller is doing the dirt. Closeup is better for the viewer.

You are missing the drag shoes on the toller that holds the tractor back from going forward as its pulling and digging, you can see and make a new one for yourself

Also, is it getting 12v at the coil with the engine off? That would explain why it won't shut down.
