My Mom lived to 94. She was over weight from age 30-60. While the craze back then was to eat low-fat, she went against the “grain” and began a no sugar/flour/wheat/rice/pasta way of eating. That was back in the late 80’s, it wasn’t referred to as low carb. When I reached my 60s, I decided I was going to eat her way. She was my role model and inspiration. She passed away last year, living her entire life disease free, med free and active until 3 day before she passed. I will always be an anti-sugar believer. Thank you Dr. Westman.

She actually got involved with the 12-step program, Overeaters Anonymous. She believed she was a compulsive overeater. OA used AA’s 12-steps but it didn’t tell you how or what to eat. My Mom needed more guidelines so she got involved with a segment of that program called OA-HOW (I forget what the acronym stands for). They used the 12-step but also had a food plan. So to remain abstinent, their plan called for no sugar/flour/wheat/rice/pasta. Three meals a day and no eating in between. So in the 80’s she was doing low carb and intermittent fasting and just didn’t know it. Lol. Her friends thought she crazy and amazing at the same time. 😊

My grandmother had some similarities. She wasn't overweight at any point in her life, she largely stayed away from carbs, and her father, my great grandfather lived until he was 97 while being very fit during his last few days. The last time I saw him was when he was 96, and he was both cycling and rowing in his canoe every day, which is astonishing for someone at that age. However, my grandmother was a long time smoker and eventually passed away last year due to lung cancer at the age of 87. Lung issues aside, her cognitive abilities and health were both relatively good before she passed away in her sleep. My grandfather was a non-smoker who, despite being tall and skinny for as long as I can remember, died at the relatively young age of 84. He ate low carb meals like my grandmother did, but he also made his own jam and his own desserts, which consisted of various cakes and desserts that he would consume daily. He eventually passed away from colorectal cancer. I think you can do certain things in life very right, and still fall victim to other, bad habits. The medical community has mislead themselves and others for several decades due to studies and surveys that looked at a specific part of human behavior, while at the same time ignoring behavioral patterns that are just as important, if not more important when it comes to reaching an accurate conclusion. The studies on red meat is a prime example, where they have typically concluded that the red meat group in the studies had more health issues, therefore red meat must be bad for health. Not taking into account that a large portion of the so-called meat eaters in their studies were people who over-indulged, lived sedentary lifestyles, and consumed trans-fats and chemicals that clearly necessitated their own, separate studies.

So let's look at vegan lifespan and quality of life factors. As a whole I don't think that you will find much improvement. In fact many vegans look like the walking dead. Purely from personal observation, I switched from a whole foods plant-based lifestyle to the ketogenic carnivore diet. I am a disabled senior citizen. But my physical health, mental health and mobility have improved dramatically. I can now hike several miles every week, using an all terrain walker. I used to be almost bed ridden and had to use a wheelchair or crutches. My mental health and clarity of thought has improved vastly on the carnivore lifestyle. I'll take 80 quality vitality laden years over 100 years being sick and feeble. When I was whole foods plant-based I was depressed, neurotic, and my arthritis pain, stiffness and inflammation were off the charts. By the way, I used to weigh over 400 pounds. I am currently at 236 pounds and consistently losing weight with the carnivore diet, hydration and exercise.

The life expectancy stats are a bit misleading because the higher infant mortality pulled down the average. A better measure would be life expectancy at age 18, not at birth. That makes for better comparison. In medieval times the life expectancy was in the 30s but that didn't mean that most people died in their 30s. You couldn't run a society like that. Similarly the increasing life expectancy in the last 50 years is not because we are keeping people healthier for longer but because we are keeping people sick for longer.

OMG Dr. Westman .. You have the patience of a saint responding to these videos !! 😊 The comment/question I have is to those who call themselves a “Vegan Keto”. This is something I’ve never understood or gotten a response to. A Nutritional Ketogenic diet is 20gms or less TOTAL carbs/day .. so how can someone who says they’re “Vegan Keto” do that ?? I often wonder when I hear these so called nutritional experts/influencers talk about keto .. whether they even know what it is. Do they actually understand the Biochemistry and Human Biology of being Metabolically Healthy at a cellular/mitochondrial level ? I’ve been living a healthy Nutritional Ketogenic/Fasting lifestyle for almost 5yrs now .. and one of the things I’ve learned over these years is that being Metabolically Healthy is something that can be measured. So whenever anyone (I don’t care who they are) tries to tell me that living this way is dangerous .. I simply ignore them and know that that’s not what my numbers say. Thank you Dr. Westman .. for all that you do in teaching/helping so many people all around the world become Metabolically Healthy. For in the end .. the RESULTS will speak for themselves !!! ✨

I base my judgments on results! As a 74 y.o. 240 pounds T2 diabetic with high blood pressure, I don't believe that my eating a high-carb diet was going to lead me to a long life because I was gaining weight non-stop. Then my best friend of 50-plus years died of a heart attack. That shocked me into taking stock of my diet and health. I instantly researched diets and settled on the Carnivore meat-only menu. That lasted only 10 days as I was always a raw veggie lover. So, I added broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, celery, kohlrabi, zucchini and yellow squash, cabbage (red & green), and avocados -- get the picture. I stayed away from pizza, doughnuts, sugar, cereals, corn, potatoes, bread, pasta, beans, rice, chips, etc. If the label indicated high carbs, then I didn't buy it! As a result, I have lost 30 pounds. I did so slowly. It took me 4 months and I have another 20 pounds to go. No diet plan ever worked for me as I never went longer than 2 weeks on any diet plan without cheating. I don't cheat on Keto because I am full most of the time. I can easily go 14 - 16 hours without eating anything at all. Not every day, to be honest, but I have stopped feeling hungry and if I eat more, I feel bloated and overly full. All other diets told me to eat when I got hungry, which was about every half hour, so I snacked on whatever was available in my fridge. Now, I don't keep a lot of food in my fridge anymore. I have not sat down at my dining table with a typical full plate of various kinds of food and bread in 3 1/2 months. My typical dish now is the meat of the day. If I eat a vegetable, it's usually raw prior to eating the meat. I now keep my blood glucose below 100 in the morning and around the mid-70s during the day and evening. I don't test for ketones, but I must be doing something right if I've lost 30+ pounds! Plus, if I want pizza, I use a low-carb tortilla and homemade pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. I am grateful that it tastes as good as a fast-food thin-crust pizza and better than any store-bought pizza I ever ate! Thanks for your insights!

Pepperoni aside, I think your decision to cut out processed foods from your diet is a recipe for success, regardless of whether you're a vegan or a carnivore. They cause so much inflammation in our bodies that both directly and indirectly influence our health in so many negative ways without us even noticing that the food we consume is the perpetrator behind it. Contrary to popular belief, high fat meals will keep you satiated, combat sugar cravings and won't actually cause you to gain weight as long as you don't consume processed sugars at the same time. If you absolutely have to consume something sweet, fruit is a much better alternative than a donut.

He worked out pretty much every day, drank kombucha tea, did everything by the book of health. He was an avid bike rider on and on. He got leukemia at the age of 61 or so and at the age of 65 had a heart attack and stints. I also knew a guy who drank a case of beer every single day of his adult life, rarely ate food of any kind, smoked for most of his adult life and lived to be in his mid 80s with pretty good heath overall. I guess my point is you can do it all right and die from the things you were trying to prevent or do everything wrong and live to be old. Its a gamble for most of us and genetics play a big role in our health. We have no clue really nor do doctors, after all they are just practicing medicine right?

You know, when the history of this generation is written, we will see it as an age of growing confidence in out ability to control destiny through diet (and lifestyle). This old attitude of throwing up our hands and saying genetics controls everything is fast disappearing. This "Plant Chompers" Guy is terribly persuasive. It seems that plant based diet helped him with some health problem and he feels that it is a solution for all the world. However, my experiments with plant based food were unsatisfactory. Aaaaaand I happen to know a little physiology. BTW, the fact that most of the people he mentioned died in their seventies certainly do not make keto diets a terrible risk that he implies it is. I have never ever heard of a vegan that lived over 100. Also, as a MD I have seen how epidemiological studies are done. "Plant Chompers" Guy has a lot of things to learn. They think this is healthy. Went keto carnivore some months back and feel way better. Sleep like the dead. Rashes on my legs are gone. No brain fog. No drop in energy ie. no hangries anymore. I eat so infrequently. Boundless energy. Dropped weight and put on muscle. Recovery time from exercise is crazy short, and healing so much faster. At 62 this way of eating for me is the way to go.
