Apologize in advance for longwinded reply - but you asked for it. We actually had a news segment here recently talking about a ship that is anchored offshore for the last 2 weeks. This containership has a covid outbreak and has been parked, visible from town, until the whole crew tests negative. It has over 1000 containers that are supposed to be offloaded. The other factor is that businesses leaned out so much over the years, that companies don't want to spend money on storage and warehousing inventory so it was all about "just in time" delivery based on predicted demand .. disruptions to the worldwide shipping completely imploded schedules. The shortages you mention are part of the problem too - globalization where everything gets offloaded to production to offshore nations to reduce costs which leads to us become dependent on others for goods. North America is so concerned about cutting the cost of mass production that we reduced our own capability to survive without the support of other nations to produce all our shit. I hope that we learn our lesson and become more self sufficient.

I got my 2021 Pan America Special in July. I rode 22,000 miles in 26 days and had a blast with it. Wandered the whole West Coast and then some. Unfortunately in Arizona I was ran off the road and had to bring it in to the dealer. Insurance didn't total it, the damage was actually relatively minor. It's been sitting at Harley since August 10th waiting on back ordered parts. I just finally got the word the parts are in this week.

One other issue (that especially affected metric bike owners) was the New Horizons cargo ship that got wedged in the Suez Canal. Yamaha (Europe) and Ducati both had 50 containers each on that specific ship. So not only did that ONE ship screw up the supply chain globally, it backed up like several hundred HUGE container ships on either side of the canal for something like 3 weeks. Also, Egypt essentially "impounded" the ship and it's cargo until the owners paid the salvage fee for the Canal - which was a billion (with a B) dollars. This was around April of this year - about the same time I crashed into a Pine Tree in an ADV training class with my Tenere. There was not a Yamaha part to be had for 2 months - they are still screwed up.

Your probably right on all points. I mean the materials that are getting shipped to whatever destination here in North America just stopped, then layoffs, and now everybody has to catch up right. We ordered a new seat for my wife's Heritage and just picked it up last week, 4 months after ordering it. When I got my new seat for my Street Glide a few years back, it was 10 days. So she's missed the majority of our riding season with the stock seat. Our dealership here in Kamloops has never seen stock of new bikes this low, ever. There the #1 Harley dealership in 🇨🇦 and last count I think there was 34 new ones. Previous to Covid they would normally have around 100 new. To make the showroom look full, they've put some used bikes inside so it doesn't look like a ghost town. I'm hoping that the prices done go up as I'm recovering from a motorcycle accident in July and will be getting a new, new or used, this winter, so we'll see what the market bears going into 2022. And of course as you know covid has changed the way Harley is releasing models now, normally we'd already know what models are coming but we won't know til January, at least that what I've heard, so it'll be interesting to see if this becomes the new normal in the industry. Cheers, 😎😎😎

I hope you are recovering well. I have a hunch we will see an uptick in service labor costs plus the bikes will probably see a 8-10% hike. With raw materials prices skyrocketing, it will be passed on to everyone. Sad, but an unfortunate truth. Hope to get proved wrong.

Just got a new roof on the house, plywood was charged at $130 per sheet (twice what it was pre-pandemic), and while discussing various products and options the guy told me one of the factors the company was dealing with was a potential pending shortage of roofing nails due to (overseas) supply line factors. I blame the GOV, They need to get out the way and let businesses function. And yea I'm looking at trading in my 19-limited on a 21-Tri-Glide. I was at my local dealer last Saturday morning to schedule my 40K service on the limited and saw the Trike sitting there. I wasn't ready that day to do business, but decided that night to pull the trigger as that was the only one in over a 100 mile radius. Since the dealer was closed Sunday and Monday that gave me time to get the bike washed and prepped for trade. Well Sunday afternoon I'm looking at the different dealer websites to make sure I'm going to be able to get a good trade in value on the limited. Only problem the Trike disappeared off the website. It was SOLD. Within 20 minutes of the dealer opening on Tuesday they posted a picture on facebook with the new owners. But you're correct most dealers have little new inventory (mine has 6 2021 models on the floor), but my dealer is low volume dealer.

Good video buddy. One of the things that compounded the chip shortage in automotive is that car companies cut back on their order of chips, thinking that sales were going to plummet because of the lockdown. Well as you pointed out people had money to spend, demand outstripped supply, and now the car companies were at the back of the line when it came to chips. When shipping falters, so does just in time manufacturing.

All the dealers I've been to [except one] has a mostly empty showroom. The sales staff say they can't keep bikes on the floor more than a couple of days. Even the bigger dealers are struggling to keep inventory in stock. Car dealers, from what I've read, are in the same boat. It's bonkers. Food and supply prices are through the roof. I think the pandemic is higher force. Hence, you cannot blame the industries for its effects as it messed up literally everything as you correctly explained. Side note, it bites the businesses in the back now that they followed the produce cheaper and sell for the same price to raise their profits. We all want to pay less but with the pandemic annihilating the global supply chain concept, we end up paying more as you rightfully pointed out. Regarding the labor shortage, I think the politics overreacted with the unemployment and stimulus strategy and we all will pay the price for that down the road with a steaming inflation. I don't blame the workers who opt for not working but taking the unemployment money as it is not their fault. I blame the political system that spends money that they don't have when it is not really required. Just my .02$. Ride safe
