Do a tune up. Spark plugs, coil packs, air filter, clean throttle body elbow/plenum, fuel filter. And change your differential gear oil. The gear oil for LS (limited slip) rear end is 75w-140 full synthetic for these trucks. You must also get a limited slip additive even if the gear oil claims to have it mixed in already. They typically don't have enough for the worn clutches in the rear end. You can get this from Ford and you'll only need 1 4oz bottle. Or you can get amsoil or transX brand friction modifier from any autopart stores. Doing a full tune up on these makes a world of a difference! This channel has videos on how to change spark plugs and coils packs and other maintenance checks and replacements.

I rarely check the fuel economy on my 02F150SupercabLariat5.4FX4 but a couple of times I checked it driving from Homestead, FL to Wilmington, NC and return, a distance of 800 miles. The truck had stock tires Michelin P metric 265/70x17 inflated to 40 psig. The only mods are the Superchips 1715 87 octane tune. The trip was mostly 4 lane and mostly with the cruise set at 80mph and it had a camper shell on the back. I don't think the shell does anything either way for gas mileage. Anyway, I got 16.0 mpg both ways. I was pleased with that considering how fast I was driving.

that is pretty excellent. The stock wheels and tires really help these trucks move better. In hindsight, I wish I had gone with 18" wheels versus these heavy 20" wheels.

Maybe do a transmission filter and fluid change. Just change the fluid that was in the pan. Most say it'll take 6qts to refill (the 4r70w) transmission pan, however mine only took 5 qts when I did it. The pan gasket is supposed to be reusable, but mine was flattened and didn't want to risk it leaking after I did the change so I got another new reusable gasket from Ford for $27.xx after tax. The only one the autopart stores usually carry is the felpro felt gasket. I didn't like this style. Rock Auto has mahle and victor reinz reusable pan gaskets though. I ran my 92 Performance tune for 1.5 yrs and get the best mpg with 3.73 gears and 34's tires, over the other two octane. 87 & 89 give me around 10mpg (with the correct octane tune I have, meaning I don't use 87-89 with my 92 tunes) but 92 gives me 13mpg. The only time my shifts are hard/firm is when I wide open throttle the truck. The shifts are reasonable and not too aggressive. However after running this tune for 1.5yrs swapping back and fourth between performance tune and my tow tune (when I haul cars) my transmission started to shift hard and had became extremely obvious. Even just driving normally and not aggressive it became a jerky experience, and since I already had the filter and fluid from another truck I didn't use it on, I just used them to see if it would infact help/change. It did help 110%. My tanny shifts better now than it ever has and is more responsive (not so sluggish throughout the rpm band) I thought I was going to have to rebuild transmission soon, but I'm confident now it's working exactly like it should. I had the factory plug in my pan still so that tells me no one has ever serviced it. Ford says the filter doesn't need service, but mine was black! It would be pointless to drop the pan and not change the filter. I used crc pro series parts cleaner and now I prefer that over brake cleaner when cleaning things (although brake cleaner is still slightly stronger for breaking down the gunky stuff) funny thing is my fluid looked good (reddish pink) on the dipstick before the change, but when I dropped the pan, boy! It was like chery coke lol. All in all those ole sayings about changing the trans fluid will break the transmission is true kind of, but not typical for the newer transmissions. If you just change the filter and fluid. If the fluid is real bad, change the filter and fluid in the pan, run the truck for 5k-10k miles and drop the pan again to drain that fluid out and replace whatever came out and you should be good unless it is still super dirty. Then you may have to do it a few times. You can drain torque converter and pan and replace all fluid in the 4r70w and be perfectly fine. You just don't want to power flush the transmission lines as that causes dirt,metal shavings, pieces of old seals into the seals or solenoids and that causes damage.
@DrivingIntelligence
2 жыл бұрын
thanks for that note Dyllan. When I bought this truck with 165K miles the first thing I did was flush the transmission fluid. The method I used: 1) remove pan, clean pan and replace filter, 2) add about 5 quarts transmission fluid, 3) remove the return transmission line from the transmission cooler, add rubber hose to drain bucket, start engine and let transmission push about 4 quarts into bucket, 4) stop engine and add 4 quarts of fluid to transmission, & 5) repeats until you've replaced about 13 quarts of fluid. Now I drop pan and replace filter every 30K without a flush. I have a full series on the 4R70W where I did a lot of transmission work without pulling the transmission: kzitem.info/door/PLGNsbVXzRfZM6WpCF862q4DlkyatzFIMz My hard shifts get worse when the transmission fluid warms up, but I also put a shift kit in my tranny that of course contributes to the hard shifts.

I am definitely wanting to do this to my truck. It has the 3.55 stock and I have 275 75 17s on the truck. I bought my 2001 f150 5.4 lariat supercrew to mainly do towing and I know the power is there, but it struggles right now, and I know it's mainly due to that stock gear ratio. My 1996 Mazda b400 pulls better than it with 4.0L 3.73. Have you tried any towing with it before the gear change and after to see the power difference and fuel economy difference? Be interested to know that. I also need to upgrade my cooling system as mine can not run AC and tow long distances or up steep hills(western NC area). One thing I feel like is inadequate compared to other trucks is the cooling system doesn't seem well for towing again comparatively. I Like your videos keep up the good work!
@DrivingIntelligence
2 жыл бұрын
thanks very much! appreciate the compliment. To answer your questions, I never had an overheating problem while towing. I tow from time to time a competition ski boat that weighs all in about 3,500 to 4,000 pounds. Use your overdrive button when towing or you'll burn up that transmission. I've not towed yet with the new gears, but will later this year. It will surely make a huge difference. I plan to share more testing, but I'm not happy with the performance of the truck at this time. My 0-60 is about the same as before the 4.10's which indicates some kind of problem. I'm working with the tuner to see if it's in the ECU. I also plan to add a transmission temp gauge and cooling fan to the transmission fluid cooler some time in the future to ensure no problems. How much are you towing?
@dylangreen8679

@@DrivingIntelligence well it varies but even my 3600 pound camper it was overheating. Come to find out its the radiator being so small. Its like a 1 core radiator. Swapping to steeper gears doesn't make any sense if you're trying to get better fuel economy. That is if you drive in a manner where you're trying to get good fuel economy from both. Unless you have a gearing/tire setup that is just too difficult for the truck. A higher numerical gear will increase engine rpm which increases fuel consumption.....generally speaking......but whatever.
@DrivingIntelligence
Жыл бұрын
If you simply think about rpm, then your assumption is correct, but there are other factors, especially engine load. Higher engine loads use more fuel. When a vehicle is bogged down due to gearing, it consumes alot of gas. Let's look at it another way... if you install bigger tires (larger diameter), your assumption means better fuel economy because the gearing is numerically lower. As you noted, fuel economy drops substantially with bigger tires. And the data speaks for itself, I had no change in fuel economy with the shorter gears. Can't argue with data.
