If you need to work on the engine, you drop the whole engine subframe. You can by a "special" tool, which are 4 long bolts. You drop the subframe bolts out, fit the long bolts, remove the clip on the hand brake, oh and remove the rear bumper. Then jack up the car, the engine and gearbox remain on the floor, and gives you loads of easy access. When lowering the body back down, make sure the handbrake thingy goes back up the tube. Ex smart car master tech !

Highly recommend joining evilution… a fantastic resource for all things Smart. You should be able to get a deep ring spanner on the alternator, spray it full of penetrating fluid and wiggle it both ways by hand. It may well free it off. Another common fault that can affect starting on these is the crank position sensor.

Want to watch that leak on the rear window.One of my mates had one of these a few years back and he was getting all kinds of random faults/issues with it.After much toing and froing to the main dealer,it turned out that there's a box of electronic gizzmos in the boot,or whatever you call it in one of these,and it had water in it but the faults would only occur on up or down inclines,obviously from it slopping about,so it took an age and a fair few of His Majesty's finest folding to put it straight

Same as our last smart, an 03 reg red Passion cabrio. The RHD wasn't as good as the original LHD model it replaced, too many changes when they moved the wheel to the other side. They can be remapped to 90-100 bhp easily and working on them isn't too difficult if you learn how to remove the rear bumper panel and crash bar. I remember fitting performance exhausts and swapping turbos in pub car parks and at car meets. a full panel change could be done in about an hour, fastest I saw was under 30 minutes!

You'll be amazed what you can fit into a Smart. - Evilution is the place to go for how-to-pretty-much-everything Smart - alternator/starters/bits generally are plentiful on eBay - use decent oil and often. Longer term an aftermarket oil cooler is a good investment - a sump pan with its own plug is both cheap and well worth doing - you'll need a long reach spark plug removal tool if you don't already have one - when you deep clean it, take all the carpet out and fit sound deadening mat front-to-back. Pretty simple job that makes a big difference - disable the radio security code in the radio settings. It's kinda pointless these days and you don't wanna lock the radio out when disconnecting the battery - watch for the airbag light; it's on a low voltage circuit and can easily be triggered accidentally. If you need to take the seats out, disconnect the battery and wait for ten minutes before starting the work. If it needs resetting, you'll need to find a dealer with a STAR machine (you can't DIY it through the OBD port) When time/funds allow: - gear shift experience can be improved/speed can be reduced by flashing/remapping - lots of aftermarket interior decoration bits (cheap and colourful) on AliExpress - when the time comes, lowering the suspension springs by a couple of cm will significantly reduce the 'Noddy car' feeling - either add 10-15mm wheel spacers or fit roadster steel wheels (pretty much a straight swap); both are cheap and the wider stance improves handling

@jonathanthorpe1653

The best thing you can ever do to these is to fit a sump pan with a removable sump plug. Originally they did not have one fitted. Both alternator and starter motor can be changed by removing the back The suspension wishbones (whole assembly) and disconnecting the side engine mounts,and lowering the engine down on a jack. The air-conditioning pipes will be in the way but you can remove them from the plastic mountains and bend them slightly to make clearance for the starter motor bolts to be removed. With the starter you may be able to fix it with a simple strip down and re grease. I’ve had mine since 2004 and it’s been quiet a reliable car and generally easy to fix. Just have a read up on water leaks at the front because there is a drain that gets blocked and when it does the water will wet the sam unit which causes all kinds of problems. Another problem is that inside the Sam unit the soldered parts can break but it’s easy to re solder them. Also check the wiring what goes to the clutch actuator and gear selector motor because they can become chafed and he will get what is known as the bars of death. Again another easy fix.

Why am I getting tones of a certain Yugo Sana and a certain Oltcit about this car? A compelling project...that might just grind to a halt and sit at the back of the unit until it's time to make another hard decision about which of the fleet is too much bother? Good luck with it anyway - at least the 'plastic fantastic' doesn't look as terrible as the Sana did and you know that it will run once the alternator is sorted out (*crosses fingers*). I see good tips in the comments already. One awkward question - does the fleet need another little car? Invacar - OK, different and literally individual, but the Matiz and Charade are already two cars in the same slot. Is there a name in the pipeline? I suggest 'FORTWONA' (Fortuna).

It has the light grey Limited Edition interior which I think is a bit nicer than the darker one. I've had it about six years now and use it pretty much every day. It certainly has its flaws but I still get the same enjoyment out of driving it now as I did when I first got it, and I wouldn't want to part with it. It has cost me more on maintenance than my Fiesta, which I've had for longer, but I bought the Smart for less the half the price, so it's all relative. No, it's a go-kart with a bodyshell. Well done you. I’ve had three of these cars and each one has given me fantastic performance, reliability and economy not to mention the fun factor. Look forward to seeing it on the road, enjoy!

Ebay good for parts. Alternator around £100-120, starter motor £70-90 if new.

The price of most used small cars has rocketed, a lot of manufacturers have stopped making new ones.

Might be worth a look round the scrap yard you go to that I can't remember the name of to see if you can find some more colourful seats.

I love my Smart fortwo called Hinny, she's 2008 451 not the 450 like your one. Only way i can tell them apart is the door handles are horizontal on the 451 and vertical on the 450 lol. I find them great fun to drive, use mine for work commute and longer motorway journeys too.

That rear subframe doesn't look great. I would have walked away from it. Desting for the scrapper i think.

Knew it was going to be a fortwo after the recent video. Weirdly I've always liked these. Look forward to more content on it and for Free (well price of recovery) you can't go wrong
