This video was one of the first films I watched on a video recorder/player. I watched it so many times I could recite every sketch from start to finish. Peter Cook was by far my favourite. The judge and the sketch with John Cleese about interesting facts crack me up to this day. Cook was a genius. RIP Mr Jolly.

the "protein causes vice" banner must be a reference to the feller who used to wander round the west end in a sandwich board years ago, warning us of the evils of protein. he would hand out pamphlets saying eggs and nuts should be avoided at all costs, as they give you wood. he is sorely missed

I saw Beyond the Fringe on Broadway. I was immediately hooked on British Humor! Found a recording of most of it on a record at a local store. Invited my friends Pam and Bonnie to come listen. They were weeping tears of laughter. We memorized most of it. We were in high school and we'd repeat lines in class. The teachers were not amused. OH SAUCY WOOSTER!! Stark raving mad, but it still makes me smile 40 years later. In fact I think that Rowan Atkinson came close to more than smiling, and corpsing the sketch. :-) Hah! Now there's a strange thing. I just Googled çorpsing and the first hit was about how Peter Cook used to try and make Dudley Moore laugh in their comedy sketches by throwing in funny ad libs. Perhaps not that strange, and actually Google making use of my recent search history when I looked for this very video. It's a clever old world we live in.

There's a 60s version of this sketch, (possibly here on KZitem) where 'will this wind', despite being spoken by the great Dudley Moore (I think) doesn't get a laugh at all.
@BlackMaria61

What happened was that Cook and Atkinson improvised on that scene and made it the crux of the sketch, where it had just been a throwway line in the original
@Lorelcom

Yes there is, but there is another version where the "will this wind?" section is developed into a hilarious bit that gets lots of laughs. I find the Cook/Moore exchange funnier than the Cook/Atkinson exchange. Here it is: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1aB72nZpq3xzbKQ

@@BlackMaria61, wrong. Cook and Moore developed this section of the script before Atkinson appeared on the scene. You can hear it here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1aB72nZpq3xzbKQ The Cook/Moore exchange was funnier in my opinion.

@KaptKan1 they didn't kill in the name of atheism, or because they were atheist. and there actually is debate about whether stalin and hitler were actually atheist or not, but they were dictators so they didn't have much choice publicly (they have to be the ultimate authority, not god). religion, meanwhile, has been the explicitly stated reason for executing/killing millions since the beginning of time (from the stone age to iraq). people are rarely killed in the name of atheism.

@KaptKan1 those people did not kill others *because* they were atheists (and it's debatable whether Stalin actually was), most of the time it was for political reasons, or simply because they were insane; their religion or lack-there-of had no effect at all on their decisions. millions of people across the world were killed for thousands of years directly because of religion (heresy, sacrifice etc), so in that sense, yes, religion has been the cause of more deaths than atheism.
