Absolutely wonderful composer. I'm doing the 4th movement with my string ensemble, it's an excellent piece. I love the other movements, and that I was introduced to this music.

Amazing collection of dances from Panama. With Spanish Dances (Sarasate), Romanian dances (Bela Bartok), Slavic Dances (Dvořák) and Hungarian dances (Brahms) definitely one of my favorites:)

Enjoyed this fuller ensemble rendition very much although the quartet version (or at least the performance of it I've heard) has a visceral punch, especially in the opening movement, that is, possibly, more breathtaking. Still, a very fine composer and arranger, occupies a marginal status in American 'classical' music, I think. Perhaps his work in film/showbiz raised a few eyebrows (not to mention his ethnic background).........

I do see what you mean. His photos suggest that he may be of the Negro persuasion. Imagine the pleasure of viewing his operas "A Bayou Legend" and "Troubled Island"...now...today? BRAVO!!!

He was definitely Afro-American and, truth to tell, quite successful. His Afro-American Symphony is probably his best-known work but he also arranged orchestrations for some movies.

@@maxmerry8470 -- Great arrangers always remind me of Ferde Grofè....and also of Robert Russell Bennett who was really behind the huge musical success of the "Victory at Sea".......

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, the British composer, was of Sierra Leone descent. Again, like Still, he enjoyed some success but you wonder how much he was really appreciated for himself as opposed to a kind of "benevolence" towards his ethnicity from the mainly "white" establishment.

@@steveegallo3384 The term "negro persausion" is a bit antiquated don't you think?
