Lovely. I know him as an astronomer, was surprised to find out he was also a fabulous musician! ;0)

Agreed! I have two CDs of music composed by William Herschel, discoverer of the planet Uranus, was a musician before he was an astronomer, from a family of musicians from Germany who became famous in England. William's sister Caroline was a fellow astronomer, a co-researcher and observer of the heavens with William. His son, and her nephew, was astronomer John Herschel.

I’ve known about Herschel ever since I was a little boy because I used to be obsessed with astronomy, now I’m a classical musician, pianist, and composer and have dreams of becoming a world renowned orchestra conductor, performer, etc. I feel like I relate so much with Herschel. He’s just so underrated and deserves more respect, I need to spread the word about him!

What a tube the first movement is... the motif that begin at 30 sec. with the second harmony (major 7 chord) is so unconventional in this repartition and absolutely sublime I can't believe it. And the guy discoverd Uranus also. Just saying.

I looked into Wm Herschel after I learned that he was a G/G/Great Uncle of my first wife. Also learned he discovered the planet Uranus! Amazing fellow.

If you know Uranus you must know him. He discovered the planet in 1781 and tried to name it Georgium Sidus.

I find this symphony a real tour de force in the 'Sturm und Drang' style achieved only by much later composers: later Beethoven, Mendelssohn (think Scottish symphony), Schumann and Brahms. Yet accomplished within the tidy classical format of Haydn and Mozart, with a modest sized orchestra. The work brims with an energetic fire --paused with wistful melancholy-- rarely attained even by Romantic composers. Extraordinary!

I love the Sturm und Drang style too! However, isn't it contained in the classical style? I think it describes a "sub-style" that was used between 1765 and 1800

What is the meaning of the "fs" dynamics in the Basso Continuo line at bar 89, third movement (10:40)? Is it a misspelled "forzato", an abbreviation of "forte subito", or something else altogether? Thanks to anyone who might have an insight!
