Turner's life was as colorful as his art. Born to a lower-middle-class family, he retained his accent and avoided the trappings of success. Despite his reclusive and eccentric nature, Turner's passion for art never waned. He earned a steady income from commissions, often reluctantly accepted, and opened his own gallery in 1804. As a professor of perspective at the Royal Academy, he lectured until 1828, inspiring countless students.
Travel played a significant role in Turner's artistic development. From 1802, he journeyed across Europe, filling sketchbooks with scenes that would inform his later works. His fascination with architecture and landscapes is evident in his early sketches and architectural studies. Turner's mastery of light and atmosphere in paintings like "The Fighting Temeraire" and "Rain, Steam and Speed" set him apart from his contemporaries.
Intensely private, Turner never married but had two daughters with Sarah Danby. His later years were marked by increasing pessimism, especially after his father's death in 1829. Despite his declining health and living in squalor, Turner's artistic output intensified. He continued to create powerful and evocative works until his death in 1851. Turner is buried in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, leaving a legacy that elevated landscape painting to new heights and influenced generations of artists.
