I was born with a medical condition, a rare blood disease, and at age 5, I heard doctors tell my parents I won't live to see my 8th birthday. At 10, another doctor told my mother and I (my father passed when I was 9) that it would take a miracle for me to live up until 12. Then at 16, yet another doctor told me it would be impossible for me to live to see my 21st birthday. I'll be 50 in a few years. My very existence is by the mercies of God, I can't explain it, but I'll keep counting my blessings. Everyday is a gift.

I've watched all the ministrations from various Ministers, and I must say, the new songs from many African Ministers seem to lack depth. I know every song by Hillsong United and Worship, and I've seen Kim Walker and Chris Quilala lead Jesus Culture. If you're an African aiming to create a global worship song, you should study Hillsong's work from the Saviour King album to their Miami Concert, up to Let There Be Light. I've watched Rev. William and Minister Nathaniel Bassey minister countless times, and their older songs have a unique power. The melodies in these new worship songs often feel off, with repetitive chants. Even though I don't have a perfect voice, I know what ignites a revival. You will recognize the ministers who have kept the spiritual fire burning in their congregations. Rev. William, you lead the way. We shouldn't sing to impress the masses, especially the younger generation we are meant to guide. Creating a spirit-filled song goes beyond voice or chant. Some of you need to revisit worship tapes from 2000-2015. Look at how "Waymaker" by Sinach, released in 2015/2017, became a worldwide hit by 2022. "Goodness of God" by Jenn Johnson and the Bethel team, released around the same time, also became a massive worship song. Similarly, "Defe Defe" became a hit because of its melody. "Woye ma me" is a song composed by Dr. Akakpo, the leader of Trinity Music Crew from Cape Coast and I grew up with almost all of them. That song wasn't mechanically composed, it's a Pentecostal spirit filled medley and while you sing other songs, your spirit tunes into other songs which have the same chord progression or keys. You start to sing on your lips spontaneously and WOYE MA ME is that melody which comes up, spirit filled! MOG's song, "Be Lifted" is in Nigeria and that's the only Ghanaian worship song in Nigeria. Ask why? It's a pure reflection of a spirit filled song, very simple but spirited! Like Emmanuel by Nathaniel Bassey! These are quiet time songs! When you fail to touch God's heart, you fail to touch the hearts of men. Songs like "Oceans," "Waymaker," "What a Beautiful Name," "Goodness of God," and "Spirit Break Out" are powerful because they carry a strong spirit. Let's return to creating worship songs with depth. These are important conversations we need to have, and I'm available to any minister who needs my expertise in spiritual music composition or songwriting. You have point but also remember that in heaven the angels REPEATEDLY sing Holy Holy Holy. It's not about plenty words or stanzas. A chant, a chorus and a refrain is equally very powerful. A song is as powerful as the one who sings or worships with it. Not necessarily the song itself. Humming with no words can be powerful. In the Ghanaian worship circles we sing 'aye aye aye' and it can be very powerful even though it's not very verbose. Even silence can be very powerful if the heart and the tongue that has been held still is overflowing with desire for God. My little contribution. 🙏

Well said, sir. While I agree with you to some extent, I believe that the notion to term some worship songs "spirit filled" or not is not in the right. Every worship song has a role to play to different individuals in the Christlife. Others may also term the "repetitive chants" as more spiritual because repetition brings emphasis, which will in all be a wrong notion. Watchman Nee deductively expressed in "The Spiritual Man" that man communicates or worships with the soulical faction(the combination of man's body and spirit), which differs from one man to another thus your spirit man may so relate to your "spirit filled" worship song while another will be in tune with the repetitive chants. Remember, the angels in heaven are always worshipping God with the same words in repetitive chants.

The songs lack depth on what basis?? Less lyrics? More chants? I believe this is the wave we have here now…the Spirit gives the songs…if it’s a song without words then so be it. If the song glorifies God then so be it…..the focus should be on God Sir
