Willie Mays was my baseball hero when I was a kid - hence my elation at his transfer to the New York Mets (I lived in NYC then), followed by my letdown at his retirement the following year and my move to Boston. Willie and I "died" together, in a sense, and, of course, I converted to Red Sox Nation, because New York baseball would never be the same without the Say Hey Kid. He was also the hardest for me to get on a baseball card...until I found two of them in Raisin Bran boxes (part of Kellogg's holographic "3-D" baseball card series). Thanks for posting!

+Todd Larson ...Todd, I too was a huge Willie fan, and was really just getting into fully understanding and following the game, when the Giants picked up, left the Polo Grounds and headed west with the dodgers...as a NY kid, it was upsetting, but I still loved Willie, and followed his exploits in the newspapers and radio (tv coverage then was nearly nonexistent from the west coast).. I too was thrilled when Mrs Joan Payson (owner of the Mets) brought Willie back to NY..but it turned out kind of bittersweet, as Willie was really pretty much finished by then, and had some embarrassing moments in the field, against the Oakland A's etc...but it was kind of poetic justice that he got to finish up in NY...Strangely enough Willie was not received in San Fran with such wide open arms...I guess the fans there wanted their own home grown star/hero, and they got it in Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, and the Alou Brothers, plus superstar pitcher Dominican Dandy Juan Marichal...but in the end, there is/was only one Willie Mays..

+dave andrews ....Dave, your 11 word statement concerning Willie, is simply the be all and all..period...on to the next subject...{one tiny addition...added to the traditional five {5} tools...he was also the most exciting baseball player ever!....one of the great fun things as a kid in the late '50s, was watching the hugely power laden National League All-Star teams, rub it into the AL, by batting Willie lead-off!...and it truly served the AL right, for failing to sign Black baseball players at the same pace as the NL...The Boston RedSox shamefully didn't sign their first black player (Pumpsie Green) until 1959, some 12 years after the Dodgers inked Jackie Robinson...talk about bigotry and racism....

I appreciate the history of Baseball. Me and my friends in Boston truly enjoyed watching the televised Saturday afternoon the National League games. Back in the 60's to early 70's, the NL Teams were stacked with talent. Sandy Koufax pitching against May's & McCovey was fascinating.

They can both thank God Mickey Mantle didn't take good care of himself. Hank Aaron himself said on the David Letermen show that too bad Mickey had those two bad legs cause he had more than both Mays and, himself. Mays admitted himself to Bob Costas that Mantle had more power than he and, more speed, that he thought he could do some things better than Mickey and then again that Mickey could some things better than he. What he forget to mention was that Mickey had 15 operations all over his body and that he[Mays] didn't get hurt much, or Mantle would have been the greatest ballplayer of all-timmes. Buck O'neil from the negro leauges who saw everybody said thea A MICKEY MANTLE ON TWO GOOD LEGS MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE GREATEST PLAYER OF ALL-TIMES', there it is. MICKEY MANTLES' BIGGEST FAN.

Mays was before my time. I was born 1971. The one thing he seem to have was very apparent was charisma. As far as everything I heard and verified by his skills as a fielder, hitter and runner was that he was the most complete player in history. I love watching his fielding highlights especially. You could possibly make arguments for Ruth, Cobb or Bonds as being best ever but Mays has to be mentioned as a possible GOAT and you wouldn't be wrong.

I'm 75 years-old and I remember Willie Mays very well! He was without a doubt the best all-around player I ever saw. In fact, he was the best all-around player God ever created. I remember Willie playing in some of those old t.v. programs. He played a 'warlock', and friend of Samantha Stevens on, 'Bewitched'. When her husband Darrin asked, 'You mean Willie Mays is a...', Samantha answered, 'How do you think he hits all those home runs?'

When I was a kid, I attended a Giants/Dodgers game at Candlestick Park in the late 60's. It was in the latter part of Willie Mays' career with the Giants, but it was thrilling to watch him in center field. Bobby Bonds was in right field, Willie McCovey was at 1st base and Juan Marichal was the starting pitcher. I know I'm leaving out some other great players, but those were my favorites. Unfortunately on that day, they lost to the Dodgers. But what an amazing team they were at the time.
