The Willowbrook State School, which was located in the Staton Island area of New York, opened in 1947, remained in operation through 1988, and has gone down as one of the most abuseful, neglectful, and inhumane residential institutions for the mentally disabled - and at times the mentally ill, as well - in U.S. history. Built to house 4,000, by the late 1960s, it was holding well over 6,000 adults and children in severely overcrowded, understaffed, brutally vicious, and cruel conditions. Over time, in both the years of its operation and in the years since it was finally closed down and abandoned, it has been the subject of numerous news stories, books, exposes, documentaries, and even urban legends. This is its story.
This video has been produced by the mentally ill, for the mentally ill, and for all others who might have any type of interest within them.
It is strictly a not-for-profit production.
