A non-music non-sequitur: this is Willy’s cameo in the 1986 movie, “Va Banque,” a comedy about people planning to rob an armored car. The film was written and directed by Diethard Küster, who directed and/or produced some of Willy’s 2002 filmed shows, including “Live At The Metropol” and “The Willy DeVille Acoustic Trio In Berlin,” as well as the documentary “Beautiful Losers.”
Herr Küster wanted Willy to play a pool shark, and asked Willy if he could play pool. Willy assured him that he was a terrific pool player. His first day on the set, however, he confessed that he did ~not~ know how to play pool (what a rascal!); an appropriate sham for a guy playing a pool hustler. Fortunately he proved to be a fast learner.
(Va banque is a gambling term for when a player makes the risky move of “going all in,” or places a bet that equals the current amount of money in the game’s “bank.”)
